WWE SmackDown Taping Results (10/23) *Spoilers*

WWE taped this week's edition of WWE SmackDown from the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina. Special thanks to Jon Hewett & PWInsider.com for the following.

Dark Match:
- Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Heath Slater. Slater got "Who are you?" chants. Yang goes over with the moonsault.

WWE SmackDown: (Airing Friday)

- Batista & Mysterio vs. Jericho & Kane is the main event tonight.

- Chris Jericho starts things off. Bragging Rights hype. JTG interrupts, then Vickie Guerrero interrupts. JTG's better on the mic. Eric Escobar comes out, then Dolph Ziggler, then Drew McIntyre. Finally, Kane. Kane & Jericho run down their team for not being ready and set up a 4 on 5 tag match, because Shad is sick. Same stipulation as Raw's 5 on 5 match, where if a team member is pinned, the person who pinned him takes his place.

- 1st Match - Eric Escobar, JTG, Drew McIntyre & Dolph Ziggler vs. The Hart Dynasty, Finlay, Matt Hardy & R-Truth. Long match. Hardy pins JTG with a Twist of Fate after Finlay with a shillelagh hit. So, Matt is now on Team Smackdown.

- CM Punk, Scott Armstrong and Teddy Long are in the back talking about the screw job. Armstrong bails out, but runs into Vince McMahon.

- 2nd Match - John Morrison vs. Mike Knox. Morrison wins with Starship Pain. Morrison gives a short promo after the match.

- Jericho & Kane congratulate Hardy and company on replacing all 5 of the old Smackdown team.

- Mickie James, Michelle McCool, Mae Young and Beth Phoenix promo. Young slaps the fool out of McCool.

- Batista & Rey talk backstage.

- 3rd Match - Batista & Mysterio vs. Jericho & Kane. Pyrofest 2009. Batista pins Kane with a spear after Mysterio scarifies himself to Kane on a chokeslam.

- Vince McMahon talks up tonight's main event. Armstrong caved in. Taker-McMahon WrestleMania 26 foreshadowing here. Vince blackmails Armstrong by saying Bullet Bob could go in Hall of Fame this year if he cooperates.

- 4th Match - Mickie James vs. Layla. Mickie wins with a spin kick. And let's just say she's gotten the message from being moved.

- Captain Lou package.

- Cole & King hype Bragging Rights.

- 5th Match - CM Punk vs. Undertaker - Submission Match for the World Heavyweight Title. Punk and company come out with a Straight Edge promo. Great simple stuff from Punk. Taker wins with Hell's Gate despite Punk's attempts at another screwjob. Punk tapped way too quickly.

- Taker plays to the crowd to send us home happy.

Im curious as to what the author means by this. That shes being demoted by fighting Layla? Cus she has fought Layla before. Or if the match was a little better than Mickie has been doing lately?

Bullshit. Punk tapping to that fucked up gogoplatta. Oh well, the era of Punk picks back up this Sunday :D

Sixx 10-21-2009 03:39 AM

Heath Slater is such an ugly, ginger bastard.

Juan 10-21-2009 03:44 AM

i'm surprised we don't hear the "who are you?" chants on TV

Rammsteinmad 10-21-2009 05:04 AM

I'm confused, it says the person who gets the pin in the tag team match will replace the person they pinned. Then it says 'the five replacements'. Wtf?

CWK 10-21-2009 05:18 AM

God, why are they dropping the ball with CM Punk? He was the top star on the show and being the biggest heel. Now he is being booked to lose all of the time. He should be the talk of Smackdown, but instead they give the spotlight to Undertaker. Makes no sense.

He's feuding with the top guy, what were you expecting? A title change on TV the week before the PPV?

No shit. I bet CWK thinks that Orton losing to Cena and Dibiase in the same month is getting BURIED!

He's not really losing all the time. He beat John Morrison and Batista recently. Fucking Batista. Granted, he does seem to be losing a little ground (I mean, he's not World Heavyweight Champ anymore), but I have faith that he's going to pick up.

I mean, he's probably the most over heel in the company, and he's a good worker, appears beatable (which gets the fans buying into the face challenging him), and he's a three-time (or four-time, if you count the ECW Title) World Champ. He's not going anywhere. He's done his job well recently. The WWE just put the World Title on a top face for a bit. Not a bad thing, overall.

I'm hoping that at Bragging Rights, CM Punk busts out a promo he used in OVW. "The reason I tapped out to The Undertaker's Hell's Gates on SmackDown!, is because I love my head, and I didn't want him to take it." He said something similar when he tapped out to Brent Albright's Crowbar in OVW, about how he needs his arm, and there was no way he was going to lose it to Albright's submission.

Mr. Nerfect 10-21-2009 12:09 PM

Wish SmackDown! had gone like this:

* Drew McIntyre & Eric Escobar defeat Matt Hardy & R-Truth to continue their feuds, and build momentum for Bragging Rights. The other members of Team SmackDown!, who have already proved themselves in the past, get the rest of the night off.

* Mike Knox defeats John Morrison in a non-title match when The Miz costs Morrison the match. The Miz gets an early advantage over Johnny Nitro, and Mike Knox can use this to get himself a future title shot.

* Batista & Rey Mysterio defeat The Hart Dynasty when Batista hits a Batista Bomb on Tyson Kidd while Rey springboards in with his seated senton with the double-team win to continue their "lovers" angle.

* Normally SmackDown! is about five matches long, but if you need a sixth match, have Theodore Long force Big Show to perform, wearing him down for Bragging Rights. Big Show can work a Gauntlet Match segment, or something, where he goes through Kung Fu Naki, Jimmy Wang Yang, Slam Master J, and finally finds himself with Finlay. Jericho can distract Show, which allows Finlay to use the shillelagh to pin Show, and give the technical victory to Finlay, Slam Master J, Jimmy Wang Yang & Kung Fu Naki.

* Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix & Natalya get some practice as a team defeating the ordered team of Mickie James, Maria & Layla. McCool's relationship with Layla comes into effect, and Layla turns her back on her team, and allows Beth Phoenix to get the pin.

* The Undertaker beats CM Punk with the Hell's Gate to retain the World Heavyweight Title when Punk taps instantly to save his ass for the "real" World Title match.

What I was expecting was for them to keep building CM Punk in the way they were doing right after he turned heel and was going through the Jeff Hardy storyline where he was clearly the top guy on Smackdown and it was clear that it was all about making CM Punk into a permanent main event star. Now Undertaker comes back, takes the title from CM Punk immediately and now Punk is losing all the time to him and just tapping as soon as he gets put into a submission hold. If I had a young guy like CM Punk with all of his talent, I would have kept the belt on him for a lengthy title run and had Taker chasing the belt, with the heel Punk cheating each time to barely come out as the winner. I just think him jobbing out to Taker every time and dropping the title wasn't the right way to go.

Droford 10-22-2009 01:00 AM

Undertaker/Vince at WM?

Brilliant

DaVe 10-22-2009 01:11 AM

It was barely a line in the spoilers, but yes it would be.

Juan 10-22-2009 01:12 AM

define "losing all the time"

Juan 10-22-2009 01:23 AM

According to Pwinsider.com, Shad Gaspard, claiming illness, pulled out of his scheduled match last night at the WWE Smackdown tapings. Gaspard claimed he was suffering from, "flu like symptoms", including stomach pains. He was then instructed to seek medical attention, and JTG took his spot in the tag match, which was said to be "at the last minute". Gaspard was gone from the building before the match finished taping. It is noted that some in the company are skeptical of his illness, as he seemed fine until it came time to tape his segment and was seen later in the evening at the hotel. JTG was involved in the finish of the match, which was originally planned for Gaspard.

Droford 10-22-2009 01:42 AM

time for a swine flu gimmick for Shad Gaspard

Shad : I musta got it from being around Vickie Guerrerro!

The thing is, the WWE sort of booked themselves into a wall with CM Punk/Undertaker. They perhaps should have had Taker do something else, and let John Morrison or even Matt Hardy (the latter being the more freed-up choice) begin a feud with Punk over the World Heavyweight Title. Finlay, as Punk's trainer, also could have been used for a mini-feud.

But the moment they put Taker into a match with Punk, they almost had to put the World Title on Taker so that the fans have valid reason to buy into him as "the guy" still. If Punk went over Taker, even via nefarious means, the fans could begin to have their interest in SmackDown!'s main event scene fade.

Punk got the win at Breaking Point, which was good booking. It was a bit too soon to take the World Title off Punk, and Taker got screwed. I would not have actually minded Taker winning the World Title when Punk passed out in the Hell's Gate, or if Punk got the Anaconda Vice, but Taker got the ropes and Punk refused to break -- eventually getting the tap-out; but the way it happened was not horrible.

Hell in a Cell was where they essentially had to put the belt on Taker in "his match." I felt it suffered by opening the show, and being as quick as it was -- but Punk got to kick out of the fucking Last Ride. The fans were also rewarded with The Undertaker's third World Heavyweight Title win, which makes them very happy.

Punk tapping out to Taker on SmackDown! so quickly makes sense, because Punk doesn't want to risk injury. I would like to see him recapture the World Title at Bragging Rights, though, and I think it actually has a fairly good shot at happening. The Undertaker has already proven that he can beat Punk (he's proven it a few times), and the World Champ doesn't need to be pinned or submitted in this match.

Just relax a little.

Sixx 10-22-2009 12:59 PM

Jeez, Noid could you try making your point without writing an essay?

Seriously, I don't think I've ever read your whole post.

Just finished watching Smackdown. Another good show, imo. Didn't feel like skipping over any segment. That Vince thing is very interesting.

It feels like we are reading an essay all the time when reading your posts, is what he means. No offence but you do go abit over the top in terms of the length of posts, especially considering that its about wrestling.

Indifferent Clox 10-24-2009 02:18 PM

you fuck right off let him write whatever he wants. they're fun to read.

edit that however you wish

lol it's not big deal though, I don't think people should complain about it. He's enthusiastic and one of the all around nicer guys here. I just don't read his posts when they run too long :p well I read the beginning and get the general idea of it.
