I have that comic somewhere, too. From the get-go, Sound and Fire. In the 90s, when they did a Venom Origin, fire was the scary deal. When Parker wants to bring Brock back out to deal with Carnage, he brings the Torch and a sonic blaster.
Fire's always been bad for venom, so I'd chalk that up to a change in character (If recently) or a cntinuity issue.
