As far as gameplay, which actually changes very little in the genre, yes - they have catching up to do. Sensationalist auto-combos probably won't fly and they will need a new/updated metagame. Being that it was 2D, people are much more educated about how a 2D game should work (controlling space, safe/unsafe attacks, etc) and that wasn't a big deal for KI back then.

KI has style, cool characters, and it found a place between SF and MK back in the day. But it has a lot more comp now, and now's not the time to expect Orchid's double Ds and dial-an-Ultra Combos to carve out a place. They have catching up to do. There are a few fighting games/systems that came out in KI's time that are still very playable today.
