I think it sort of evens out a little. Games have been £40 for as long as I can remember while everything else in the high street is getting more and more expensive as time goes on. The only way they could really keep games at that price while everything else is rising is to have some content held back.

I think the DLC thing makes it a little easier to digest financially. I'd rather spend £40 on a game and then have optional stuff for an extra £3 every couple of months than spend, say, £60 or £70 to have everything on the disc available right away.
Even if it still totals £70 after buying the DLC, it's better to have that extra £30 stretch over 6 or 12 months than pay it all in one go at the shop, when I buy the game.

I think that's about how much they'd have to charge if they didn't make things DLC and had to keep up with the rising price of everything else.
