So Crosby is battling a vertebrae injury. Between that and his concussion history that dates back to juniors I actually wouldn't be surprised if he retires in the very near future. It would be a devastating blow for the NHL but the guy is 24 and already has gone through some severe injuries. It might be for the best.

As bad as it is for Crosby, the NHL is a bit better now than when Crosby debuted in terms of marketability. Winter Classic alone became a huge event for the NHL.
They still have Ovie and could switch to Malkin as the new face considering he's just as important to the Penguins (and potentially even bigger) as Crosby is. They also have Seguin, Hall, Kessel, and a few other great young players to promote instead of just over relying on Crosby.
