I guess there's a sense that they're "natural opponents" or something.
Taker was one of a handful of guys (along with HBK) to stay loyal to Vince when every other big name jumped ship to WCW. On the opposite side of the coin, Sting is the single biggest star never to appear in WWE.
They also have some correlation in gimmick; the quasi-supernatural thing. And they both like leather trenchcoats, of course.
The match would probably be pretty run of the mill from an in-ring perspective but I don't doubt that with the WWE machine behind it the build up and spectacle would be incredible.
