I think a fitting end to Dexter would have been Dexter gets arrested for "killing" his sister and is sent to prison, he feels melancholy about it until he sees a prisoner being shanked. and everyone acting like they "didn't notice" (not snitching).

He deems him being sent to prison wasn't a bad thing at all and it is more like a buffet for his "dark passenger".
