Nintendo won't be joining Microsoft and charging for the majority of features on the new Nintendo Network with at least the Miiverse and other social features confirmed to be free. There is some conflicting reports saying its possible the online multiplayer will be charged will others are stating it won't.

They also are currently hiring and consulting a lot of people with experience in network making and running to help finalize the new Network such as the recent hiring of former VP of Disney's interactive media branch as the new boss of the Nintendo Network.
