Even the internal parts of the yard so they don't have to distract the zombies everytime they want to leave? I'm pretty sure they did, but after the governors first attack breaking the gates down and having Tyreese and co sneak in the back door, they stuck around. The ones out front were probably left in case the Governor came back, kind of like an unofficial defence.
