Origin
The image became popular in late 2009 after someone on the /sp/ board of 4chan posted a screenshot of Pardon The Interruption where Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon talked about the Indianapolis Colts’ decision to rest Peyton Manning in a game against the Jets, which they ended up losing. Across the bottom of the screen, it said, “Why did the Colts give up?” The meme continued in a thread where a person asked “Why do you follow the teams you follow?” with a picture of just Tony Kornheiser’s face and the word “Why” from the bottom of the screen. The thread is archived here.
Usage & Spread
This meme is used often on the /sp/ board of 4chan any time a person asks “Why” about something, or anytime Tony Kornheiser is brought up. Other variations include Tony Kornheiser and the word “Why” in Obama red, white and blue form, as well as other images having someone’s face replaced with Tony Kornheiser’s and the word “Why” replacing anything that sounds like “Why” (for example, a picture of the front cover of Twilight having Tony Kornheiser’s face replacing the apple and “Why” replacing the “wi” in “Twilight”).
