Carandiru
Has anyone seen this yet?
It was released in the UK and Ireland on Friday, supposedly, but I went to the pictures yesterday in Dublin it was nowhere to be seen. It's a Brazilian film about a doctor who worked in a hugely over-crowded prison in Brazil, where the prisoners basically ran the place themselves but where AIDS was rife. The film relates the stories of the doctor at the centre of the story and some of the real characters in the prison, leading up to a massacre carried out by riot guards sent in to take control of the prison, killing over a hundred prisoners. I've read a few reviews and they all see it is amazing, and got a 5 minute standing ovation at the end, at some random European film festival that is famous. I want to see it, but knowing this country, it probably won't be on general release until everyone goes crazy for it in a few months. Quote:

Gonna try to see it this weekend. Like I said in the other thread, only playing in like 3 or so theaters in the entire United States, a couple in LA and one in NYC.

is it true or like semi-fabricated, cause I know of the carandiru massacre and i've seen the pictures and stuff, but I never knew about the prisoners pretty much running it themselves.

It is true. I think it's semi-documentative, with spliced interviews from people really involved.
The doctor at the centre of the story wrote a book about his experiences, and the director worked with him to make a film out of it. |

Just saw it. It was good, I guess, but not as good as I wanted it to be.
There wasn't really a central plot or anything in the movie. Basically, you get to know a couple of prisoners in some vignettes, then all of a sudden there is the riot, a bunch of prisoners get shot, and the movie ends. I DUNNO. |

I saw it last week in Dublin. Good film. I liked the style of introducing characters and them telling their stories. Funny at times, and had a decent shanking incident.
