It is a good underdog story.
And yes it is one of the 10 greatest sports ever made. |

Can't believe I missed Rocky (I-IV, Balboa). The Hurricane and Gladiator also. And Best of the Best might be the first sports film I ever saw.

In fact, Rocky V is better than The Karate Kid.

It's not like the sports movie genre is a goldmine of great movies. There are some great movies, for sure, but come on. There's everything from Raging Bull, to Bull Durham. Still, for every Rocky there's about a hundred peices of shit.
Karate Kid is a pretty good movie, and a memorable one. It's not in the top 5 sports movies of alltime or anything, but it's not like it's absurd to consider it one of the best. |

I find it hilarious that neither of those lists included anything like Raging Bull or Field of Dreams

Just noticed that the best sports films tend to be about baseball and boxing

To be honest The Karate Kid barely registers as a sports movie so much as a martial arts movie. It just happened to have a sports competition at the end. The climax could have been a street fight and it would change nothing about the movie. My list above dealt with the sports as part of the plot.

I don't see how Raging Bull transcends the genre any more than Rocky, or any other boxing film like Cinderella Man and Million Dollar Man. It's about the boxer, so it has more to it than boxing, but it's still a sports movie by far. I guess if we're talking about actual footage of people playing baseball...That's not really what makes a real sports movie though |

If you consider martial arts a sport of any kind, it's definitely a sports movie as much as any of the others. But in that case Bloodsport would be a sports movie too. I have no problem with such, just saying. Also, Bloodsport is awesome |

Looks like it'll be alright. It's not made for 'us'. It's made for kids. Kids like new movies, not 'our' movies (older).

Which is the greatest offense? 40-Year-Old Ralph Macchio, The Next Karate Kid, or Karate Kid Who Really Learns Kung-Fu? I will say 40-year-old Macchio, provided there is some line in the movie that explains the name of the film.

40 year old Macchio with a gut and a women's ass, still not as offensive as Kalyx saying Bring it On and the Longest Yard remake were better than the original Kid.

I haven't seen Bring It On, Bring It On Again, Bring It On: All or Nothing, Bring It On: In It to Win It, or Bring It On: Fight to the Finish so I can't tell you if he's right about that. But Karate Kid is definitely better than The Longest Yard remake.

The first Bring It On was great, the sequels had nothing to do with the original (no returning cast, writers, or directors). In fact the Bring It On series got taken over by the modern American Pie producers. Two series stemmed from a decent original that have no business going on.
And I totally put Bring It On on par with The Karate Kid. 'Kid's subject matter may be more interesting with me, but as a movie it didn't change my life or anything. It does nothing Bring It didn't do as far as entertainment goes. |

Being a person who participated in drum & bugle corps, I would say that Drumline should NOT be considered a sports movie.
Is there lots of physicality involved in the activity? Yes. Is it a sport? No. |
