Internet/Router Problem

Back again. Recently I've been having some connection problems. After a few minutes I get the "Limited or No Connectivity" message when I'm on the net. My girlfirend has given me an old router to use to see if my router is the issue. However, when I hook it up to the phoneline and search for the network it offers me the name of her old network.

Is there something I need to do for it to pick up my connection?

What do you mean by it offers your gf's network? You mean her old wireless network name? If so, it's supposed to, unless she reset it before giving it to you.

And what OS.

But for now I think your current router is knackered.

Yes you can reset the router. Dependandt on what it is, there is usually a button on there, they are depressed in so you have to use a paper clip or something. Sometimes it's holding them in there for like 10 seconds (whilst switched on).

Other than that give me the model of it and I'll try to help you more.

you can go into Firefox / IE or whatever you use and type in 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.100.1 that can get you into the router settings and you can change / reset in there. But like I say, what model is it?

It depends if your on ADSL or Cable. Who is your provider? And you say "through the phoneline". That would suggest ADSL as cable would be (usually) a white wire with a thin wire sticking out of the end like this:

If it is unplugged.

Then yeah it should.

The cable that is that of the image above goes into your cable modem, the RJ45 (that's this):

Goes from your modem to the WRT54G2, then you can either do wireless or wired. Eitherway, if you have reset the WRT54G2 and then reset your cable modem (pull plug out of the back for 10 seconds), it should work fine and your router should pick up the internet, leaving you to simply connect to the router.

If that works, make sure you password your router though so noone gets on your web.

If it doesn't work, it could be many things. From you not understanding what I'm saying, to the MAC address not being cloned, to the router being fucked, to many other things. but if it's not broken, it'll be an easy fix. I'm not god, so I can't guarantee I can help you at all, but I'm hoping the above was of some help.

I don't have a modem. The router is connected directly to the phoneline (via a microfilter).

Then it's ADSL.

You need to input all the settings from your old router into your new one because there may be usernames and passwords that you need to configure.

Have you tried connecting to the linksys (which is your g/f's router) to see if you get an Internet connection?

Yeah. It searches for the network address but doesn't find it.

Most ADSL modems are mashed with routers these days. Strange.

It's hard to diagnose over the web. Being there would be diff. You don't have any mates who know their shit?
