WCW's logo change around 1999
Was it ever explained why WCW changed their logo? I remember it being vaguely mentioned in The Death of WCW, but I loaned the book out 4 years ago and never got it back.

Dunno. I assume in a move to seem "fresh".
I found this pic of how they advertised it in USA Today: |

pretty sure Bischoff randomly decided that they needed an overhaul and had WCW spend a fuckton of money on the new set which was basically a huge version of the new logo back when he was doing anything he could just to get a one week bump over RAW

That logo was so shitty that WWE has never even used it in video games, DVDs, etc. They either use their WCW inVasion logo or the old school logo.
I always kind of like that logo. |

That new logo made the whole sets look absolutely shitty, like some independent show.
Hated it. |

My whole thing with the logo was - a) why change? b) it looks like something that has nothing to do with wrestling c) Are they going to redo the RoboCop storyline with a shitty ripoff Batman?

They might have made several mentions during certain episodes of Nitro itself but it was basically an official reboot of the company into a new direction. Almost all of the real "raunchier" and WWF Attitude-like stuff on Nitro occurred after the logo was changed.
They had another reboot planned as well right before officially shutting down although don't remember if another new logo was being teased. Every other drastic change was due to whenever someone new took over, they wanted everything rehauled or changed. Thunder itself was just an excuse for WCW to have another show to compete with the WWF instead of actually developing it into a good show. |

According to one quotation of a bunch you can find online collected into threads in various forums, The Wrestling Observer noted that the ad aired the day AFTER the Nitro it advertised! And the new business cards misspelled Atlanta as "Altanta"!!!

I never like the dying days logo and never really cared about the Invasion-era logo.

Not just that, James, but I really felt that the dying days logo didn't fit WCW very well at all. The Invasion-era logo was okay, but it's just isn't WCW to me, it was mainly Vince's design of it all.

Holy shit, I just now noticed that too since you mentioned it and made me look for it. The shit in the middle are Ws and the hook things make a C.

That explains the WWE's custom WCW logo. The fact is took over 12 years to realize there was a "WCW" in the logo says something.

I don't see the WCW in that one. Although it has moved the US and Mexico into the southern hemisphere.

And apparently, the UK is attached to the rest of Mainland Europe via France, Belgium and The Netherlands.

Don't know how anybody could not notice the WCW in the logo. I mean, it looked like garbage, but it was pretty obvious that it was there.

bollocks. I have the eyesight of a telescope and I've only just noticed it. Admittedly never paid it much attention because it's an abortion but still

So you guys thought the logo was just random shapes with the words "World Championship Wrestling' under it?

I find it hard to believe that it can take someone 13 years to notice the letters "WCW" in that logo.

I guess I can give some leeway for the W's. Afterall, they're at an angle and are just designed weird. But there's a giant C, slap bang in the middle of the logo.

I thought it was just a bunch of shit thrown together to look "cool for the new millennium" or whatever. I guess because of how the WCW Nitro set was done, I never really noticed the bottom "hook" thing that made the C. The W's never even came into my mind until he said he just saw the WCW in the logo.
The Ws were close together I never thought of them as letters but just some weird graphic thing. |

After seeing that picture of the set, it's understandable.

I always knew it said WCW but I used to play WCW Mayhem a lot when I was a kid.

I always knew it said "World Championship Wrestling" under the squigly thingamajigs. The original WCW Nitro set was badass though.
I still can't believe WCW got so cheap/broke that they used a shitty set for every Nitro, Thunder, Saturday Night, Saturday Morning, PPV, etc. I remember when I first stumbled upon WCW Worldwide (it aired at Midnight/1am after Showtime at the Apollo) how cool it was. |

Technically speaking, wouldn't telescopic eyes make it harder to see the full design of logos on a televisual screen?

In all honesty, I think WCW Backstage Assault would have been a good game if you could have had normal matches...in a ring. I remember playing the hell out of it, but there was no story mode and no normal matches or anything. Once you unlocked everybody it was kind of bleh.

Plus the roster was brilliant. After I made my post about WCW Mayhem I went and read up a bit on it because I thought it was that one that had the great roster, but turns out it was backstage assault. Kinda want to play it now.

I spent forever unlocking people in that. Can't remember if it was Bischoff or Russo, but it was like the lay off was worth it.
Shame WCW didn't last one more year. Def Jam Vendetta would have been a PS2 WCW game. |
