Torrent help - I'm a technodunce (New problem with AVI files on disc)

Yeah, I'm really crap with most technology but I want to start downloading shows and stuff. A friend of mine suggested to use Vuze. So I installed that and then I used Pirate Bay to download a couple of things. Are those good to use?

Anyway, I managed to stumble over those couple of obstacles fine enough, and the files I've downloaded are AVI files, which is all well and good if I wanted to watch stuff on my laptop, but I would rather watch them on my TV (get too distracted when I've got my laptop on as well ). So basically I want to watch them on my X-Box, but I'm not on X-Box Live so AVI files won't play without some media upgrade. What's a good way around this? Is a file converter to turn those AVI's into WMV's a good idea? Should I just give up? Help please.

Smile

How are you getting the files to your XBox? If it's on the same network, TVersity would do the job.

If you're copying them to USB and playing them that way, Vuze will convert them for you.

Yeah I'm transfering them over with a USB, My Xbox isn't connected to my network though (not got my Xbox online at all, never have) so the option to convert to Xbox media isn't there on Vuze.

Okay, just tried connecting my Xbox to my laptop with an ethernet cable to see if that would do anything. The Xbox logo comes up on the devices for Vuze now but it won't convert the files to anything. It's just saying under the 'Conversion Progress' column "N/A" next to any downloads I drag there and there's no files in the corresponding folder. Am I missing something really simple?

Czech out this bad boy then.

I haven't used it, but I did use their PSP video converting software before I got my iPhone and it was easy as hell.

Yeah thanks, that seems easy enough to use. Just told it to convert a file for me, is it normal for conversions to take a reeeeeeeeal long time yeah? 43 minute tv show is currently looking at 4 hours to convert.

Okay new dilemma.

Everything is fine if I put the AVI file onto a USB stick and plug that into my Xbox, everything plays fine. But I tried to drag a bunch of AVI files onto a disc so I could keep them as a homemade "boxset", but if I insert the disc into my Xbox it's not recognising it. I assumed it would just be exactly the same as when I have the files on USB, except instead of selecting "portable device" on my Xbox, I'd be selecting "current disc", but that option is greyed out and I can't select it.

Anybody know why this might be?

My guess is that it's designed to read individual files off of a USB drive, but its only designed to play games or actual DVDs from the DVD drive. I suspect if you burn the DVD as an actual DVD rather than file storage, it might be able to play.

If you've downloaded the new dashboard, the disc should pop up under the "video" section while the "play disc" option stays out.

I think. They might have changed that.

Right. Popped it in and under the Home tab it hsowed "Mixed Media Disc" and when I clicked A nothing would happen.

Scrolled over to the Video Tab, then Video Apps, than Video Player and selected "Current Disc" and everything was fine.

Which dashboard update are you using? I was about to suggest you download the "optional media" file but I can't even find it and I think they might have added that to the new dashboard automatically. I'll look some more though.

You may just be writing the disc wrong too.

So I'm pretty sure you've already done this since you were watching videos fine before but if you haven't yet, go to Games - Games Marketplace - Sort By Title - O - Optional Media Update.

But again, I think you've already done that.

If that doesn't work than I think you're writing it wrong maybe. Lemme know

I'm starting to think I'm not writing them properly because it didn't even say there was a "Mixed Media Disc" present, it just says "Open Tray" as if there's no disc in there at all. Other discs that have pictures and music and stuff on all come up with "Mixed Media Disc", but not this one. Although when I put it back into my laptop the files are there.

Like Dark One said, I'm starting to think I should just download some sort of converter or DVD creation software or something and just burn them as DVD's rather than a file holding AVI's.

I've found that the XBOX is really finicky when it comes to playing media files and different codecs.
At first I used this media conversion software to change file formats and codecs to those the XBOX could understand.

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

It worked well, but I got tired of waiting for the conversion to complete.

So instead, I opted to bypass the XBOX entirely and get this:

http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita.../dp/B003MVZ60I

The great thing about that is it's compatible with a ridiculous amount of file formats, it's super easy to set up, and it can play in full HD should your content be displayed in that manner.

As for why it's hit and miss, it's possible the ones that aren't working aren't getting "finalized." There's an option to set it like this when you burn it, which locks everything down and writes it in a way most devices can read--even if it's just a "data" disc full of .avi files rather than a "video" disc. I'd recommend double checking to be sure the next time you burn one. Beyond that, I'm not sure. Were they the same files?

stultiloquy's recommendation of a companion device for your TV is a good one if your primary goal is to stream and/or watch the media on your TV, rather than archive them, but you'll need to connect the companion device to your network.

Ultimately, if you're going to stick with watching the files on a 360, you'll definitely want to get something like Nero Burning Rom or Roxio to burn/format the discs as a "video" disc. This might affect how many episodes you can get on a disc, but it should make things easier.

Conversion to make sure it's .wmv or an .avi file w/ a DivX codec is an option, but unless you have a super powerful computer, it's going to take forever to encode each one.

It really comes down to what you want your money/time investment ratio to be. The companion device, of which I'd say the WD Live one is probably best for being able to play just about anything, is the easiest option if you don't want to archive and you can connect it to your network. Downloading Nero or Roxio is probably the best of the "cheap" and small time investment options. You could also get a USB drive and put them on that and plug it into the xbox. That eliminates the disc formatting issue and makes it into a video file formatting issue, unless you're also aiming to archive things a little more permanently.
