Computer Failure Problem...
So last night I smelled a slightly musty, smoky smell. Figured it was a neighbor burning wood so ignored it. This morning, as I was on my PC, it suddenly turned off and found the smell was indeed coming from the PC. I've had problems like this before with overheating without the smell (I had to reset the heatsink with new thermal paste) but before it always turned back on after letting it sit for a bit. Not so this time. When I got home tonight and tried it, I got a split second of it coming on (fans and lights) then went right off.
I haven't actually taken it apart yet (going to tomorrow) but I'm wondering what I should look out for. I'm afraid the motherboard and/or CPU are fried, but I'm hoping it's just the power supply. |

Smell of ozone that sounds like, which is the power supply dying.
Only problem is the the power supply going down can take out other components with it. It's rare but if you have any issues after you replace the power supply (and you've bought a good enough power supply like a 750w one or so), run a memtest and if that comes up good, might have taken either the CPU or GFX card with it. |

I just pulled the PSU out and the smell is definately localized within it. It's a 700w one. Should I get something bigger or just get a better 750? The one I had in it was this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341019
Reading some of the reviews, this seems to be a problem with the PSU itself. Seems to fail after a year or two. Could you recommend a brand possibly? This was the first power supply I bought, and I guess I was trying to cut corners. Was probably the cheapest I could find. |

Everyone I know uses Antec, but they are a little pricey.

Got the Antec. Working perfectly fine, don't notice anything wrong so I'm guessing it didn't take anything out. Thanks for the advice.
