Post Backstage fights

I think many of us know that professional wrestling matches are predetermined and the wrestlers aren't really trying to hurt each other in the ring. However, as many of us have learned by reading the autobiographies of various wrestlers and/or watching out-of-character interviews some wrestlers have been apart of, there are unfortunately legitimate disagreements sometimes among the wrestlers just like there are disagreements sometimes in any job among co-workers, and the professional wrestling business is certainly no exception. Sadly it's just human nature for most people to gossip about each other and for personalities to clash, and things do occasionally get out of hand as a result and real-life animosity can lead to physical conflict - Both in and outside of the ring.

So what are some of your favorite backstage fights or shoot matches you have read, seen, or heard about?

I've heard several over the near 25 years I've followed this sport.

I'd say the Chris Benoit-Kevin Sullivan feud definitely comes to mind.

The Rougeaus roughing up Dynamite Kid and knocking out his teeth. If I remember correctly, the Kid said in his book that he 's sure they would've killed him, but Bad News Allen heard the commotion and broke it up.

The Jericho / Goldberg WWE fight, just because I'm a massive Jericho mark

I think my alltime fave tho, I heard a story about Bruiser Brody trying to shoot on Lex Luger cause he thought Lex was a "pretty boy". Supposedly Brody hid razorblades in his wristtape, and stuck them in the tape on his fingers midmatch Freddy Krueger-style. Lex took one look at Brody coming at him, jumped put of the ring and ran to the back grabbing his bag and running to his car white as a sheet

Didn't Arn Anderson and poopy pants Sid get into a brawl involving scissors? Also, I hear that Macho Man gave Hogan the black eye he had at rasslemania 9

I think Sid tried to fight Pillman with a Squeegee.

Buff Bagwell got in a fight with Helms which sent him packing from the WWE

Steiner vs. Hogan and Bischoff is brand new but, just like all things involving Big Poppa Pump, it is great. I would also venture to say that Nailz and Vince is a good story.

I think Dynamite Kid was a bully, but one story he was involved with that I side with him on was when he slapped the Honky Tonk Man and made him cry.

I think HTM is a major Internet-tough guy, a bully himself, a pretentious bastard, and has no wrestling talent at all. He also reminds me of a hooker because he only does what he does for money, and he admits it. You ask him what his favorite match was, and he'll tell you "The one where I made the most money." He is also like a stripper because he is only nice to fans because he only desires their money and it's funny because so many marks fall for his nice guy act, so I am glad he got punked by Dynamite Kid back in the 1980's.

The story is - Harley Race ( Dynamite's friend) had to have surgery, which meant he missed out on a PPV, his place went to Honky and after Honky recieved his pay check he started gloating about it. He even joked about Harley's surgery and said to the boys "Harley doesn't have any guts anymore" - Because ya see, Harley Race was away from the wrestling scene, in surgery having part of his intestine removed.

Honky was all and all just being Honky. His rude comments led to Dynamite hitting him. According to Bret Hart and Jacques Rougeau, Honky was soon crying and begging Dynamite Kid for mercy - something which he has denied.

That must be when Brian made the N.W.A. reference to The Gangstas, and I don't mean the National Wrestling Alliance either.

that's hugely embellished, there were no razorblades or putting them on his fingers mid-match and so forth, nor any stories of Lex grabbing his bag and running to his car.

also hugely embellished with the "KO'd off of one openhanded slap"

but yeah, Dynamite and the Rougeaus is the best story. Was gonna post 4 or 5 linked vids on Youtube that tell the whole story by putting together clips from various guys shoot interviews but they seem to have been taken down. Gist of it basically was:

- Curt Hennig ribbed the Rougeaus by fucking with their bags. The Rougeaus for one reason or another assumed the Bulldogs had done it and basically let it be known that if it happened again, they'd tell the office.

-Dynamite heard via Hennig shit stirring and being the "tough guy hothead" he is, cheap shotted Jacques by slapping him out of his chair from behind while he was playing cards. Jacques had a go back but came out on the losing end. Raymond (the "tough one") had a bad knee injury and was basically taunted by Dynamite, who knew he couldn't do anything

- Tension built over the next few days/weeks about retaliation etc to the point where the Rougeaus claim they considered shooting the guy (something to do with being at their Dad's house and having a reputation to "live up to" in Montreal) Dynamite had continued the taunting over this time, constantly asking Ray "how is knee was " etc

- Dynamite is in catering at a TV taping with Pat Patterson, Jacques has a roll of quarters in his hand and sucker punches Dynamite in the mouth knocking most of his front teeth out. He apparently landed a few more clean shots before it was broken up. I think my favourite part of the whole thing is the fact Dynamite never went down.

- Vince ended the whole thing by getting the four of them together and basically saying there'd be no more retaliation or whoever was involved wouldn't get paid. This was all right before Survivor Series 1988 and was basically the beginning of the end for the Dynamite Kid.

I also heard at that Survivor Series, the Rougeaus got eliminated early that they had to leave the arena in their ring gear with no time to change.

Dynamite and Jacques worked together quite a bit during that Survivor Series match just fine and it took place after the Vince meeting so I doubt it. They apparently bolted from the arena after jumping Dynamite tho.

The Rougeaus/Bulldogs backstage war is a favorite of mine too.

The incident began at a house show in Syracuse, New York. The Rougeaus saw that the match list said there would be two tag-team matches - The third and the eighth match. Now a ride from Syracuse to Montreal was very short, so they asked the staff if they could wrestle the third match and leave to Montreal from there to have one more day with their families. Since their trip was so short, and the Bulldogs would not being able to go home anyway since they resided in Calgary, they saw no reason that it would bother the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs even said to them that it was okay, but the Rougeaus later had their suspicions that they were not okay with it.

Apparently it was an unwritten rule backstage at that time that you should always have someone watch your clothes when you are not around so no one messes with it. The Rougeaus had asked Curt Hennig to watch their stuff while they wrestled and he decided to cut their clothes to ribbons. When the Rougeaus returned, he quickly ran from the bathroom and came out looking at their stuff pretending to be just as surprised as they were. The Rougeaus instantly blamed the Bulldogs because they were known pranksters backstage. The Rougeaus also went home later and realized their work-out gear was missing too.

After the Rougeaus had left the shit was stirring around the dressing room with how the Rougeaus had rearranged their match time and various other things. Dynamite Kid also heard from Curt Hennig that the Rougeaus were blaming the Bulldogs for messing up their clothing and stealing their gear, and that the Rougeaus were planning on telling Vince McMahon about it.

It all led to the confrontation in Miami, Florida. Jacques was in the dressing room playing cards when suddenly he was punched from behind. When he saw it was Dynamite he kept yelling "what's wrong", but Dynamite kept punching him. Raymond (who was on crutches) tried to intervene but Dynamite punched and knocked him over too. Raymond remarked "Oh, you're going to beat up a guy on crutches?", to which Dynamite replied "No, I'll wait for you to heal and then I'll beat you up".

The incident took place in Miami, where the Rougeaus father lived. Jacques did not talk to his brother or father for three days. When they were on a plane leaving Miami, an announcement came on the speaker saying "Ladies and gentlemen, we're thrilled to have wrestlers from the WWF on board this flight and we want to congratulate Jacques Rougeau on his recent boxing match". It was at this point that Jacques broke his silence to Raymond and said "Wednesday is when I'll get my revenge".

For days, Jacques and Raymond kept to themselves, trying to convince Dynamite that he had won over them. Dynamite would walk by them looking confident and strong, and he would taunt, and bully Raymond and try to intimidate him by sarcastically asking him "How's the knee?".

Jacques gave the impression that he wanted nothing to do with Dynamite and was in great fear of him; all to make their plan for revenge unexpected.

During this time of silence, Jacques even noted that people were treating him with less respect, for not trying to get back at Dynamite. The primary person he mentions was his best friend Dino Bravo, who would simply nod when Jacques greeted him. Meanwhile Raymond was prepping Jacques for the upcoming "attack", by having him practice jabbing all night in the hotel rooms. Jacques broke the silence with his father and called him the night before all of this went down, to which his father said, "get a roll of quarters and hold it in your punching hand, when you deck him".

This led to a TV taping at Fort Wayne, Indiana. Unbeknownst to either the Bulldogs or the Rougeaus was that Vince and the powers that be had a meeting that came to the decision that the next person who starts a fight is fired automatically. Vince had then approached the Rougeaus and said he wanted to see them later. Jacques knew his attack had to happen before this meeting took place. They waited by the corridor of the hallway as wrestlers were coming back from lunch.

Things could not have been more perfect for the attack because all the people that Dynamite was usually with (Davey Boy, The Hart Foundation, Bad News Brown, and Don Muraco) had walked by already, so they knew Dynamite would be alone. Up until Pat Patterson came by and started talking to them, but this did not deter Jacques's determination to do what he wanted to do.

As soon as Pat was walking away Dynamite walked by he started doing his cocky little strut by Jacques, to which Jacques simply said "Hi Dynamite" and punched him square in the mouth knocking four of his teeth out. Jacques kind of lost focus, because he was expecting Dynamite to go down from that punch and not expecting Dynamite fight back. Raymond was screaming for him to start jabbing to which Jacques did repeatedly. Finally Bad News Brown grabbed Jacques to break up the fight and Jacques offered no resistance to being pulled away.

After the incident, Pat Patterson had sent Davey Boy to take Dynamite to the hospital; Jacques looked to Raymond and said "Now we'll go see Vince". When they knocked on Vince's door, Vince opened the door, but could only see Raymond to which he said "I said later guys". Jacques said fine until Vince saw the blood all over him. Hogan was in the office with Vince and took one look at Jacques and said "I'm outta here brother". Even Randy Savage opened his dressing room door and saw Jacques's condition and just shut his door.

Vince did make time to talk to them then, and despite the meeting with the higher ups he said that they were not fired. He said he was going to go get the Bulldogs, and told them to lock the door behind them. The Rougeaus' did more then that as the broke they legs off of chairs in the office in case the Bulldogs entered and a fight started again. Vince came back to the office by himself and said he was sending the Bulldogs to a tour of Europe. The Rougeaus would be going home to Montreal after some house shows in NY. Nobody talked to them the rest of that day and Vince even escorted them to their car.

Sometime later, Dino Bravo went up to Jacques and said "I have good news and bad news. The good news is the Bulldogs gave their notice. The bad news is the Bulldogs gave their notice". Jacques realized the situation he was in with how they are leaving, but now they have nothing to lose. Jacques was in fear of his life so he made some calls to "some people" in Montreal and pulled Dino Bravo aside one night "since he knew what type of person Dino Bravo was" and said "I call my family every night by midnight. If ever I don't call . . ." and then he showed Dino that he had Dynamite's home address and Dino nodded, understanding what he meant.

The final night for the Bulldogs was Survivor Series 1988, where both teams were involved in a tag-team elimination match. The Rougeaus were a little nervous since they did not know what was going on that night and nobody talked to them until about 90mins before the show. Vince asked both teams into his office and it turns out that Dynamite had a high spot he wanted to go over. He wanted to gorilla press Jacques and teeter backwards towards the ropes and as Raymond would come to attempt to make a save, Dynamite would toss Jacques onto Raymond. Jacques immediately said "That's a good idea", but in the back of his mind did not discount the fear of Dynamite dropping him on his head on the concrete on the outside.

After the meeting Vince asked the Rougeaus if they would mind leaving as soon as they were eliminated from the match, not even stopping to take a shower. He did not want to take any chances since it was the Bulldogs' final night.

Like seriously, they had no actual beef. Curt is the fucking man.

The Big Show vs Khali which apparently began when Big Show instigated The Great Khali. Show had been upset with Khali for a few weeks because he felt that Khali used to many moves in the ring that should be made available only to Big Show as he is a "giant."

According to a backstage source present at the house show, Khali and Big Show were verbally arguing for several minutes before Big Show decided to throw the first punch, however he tripped over someone's bag and fell to the ground. Khali jumped on Show and the two began fighting on the ground, with Khali apparently in clear control before the fight was broken up.

This had to be a hilarious fight to see.

According to Kurt Angle's book, Vince McMahon once (jokingly) jumped him backstage and took him down. (Vince has a background in Amateur wrestling and for some reason felt the need to prove himself to Angle.)

In typical Vince fashion, he reminded Kurt every chance he got that he was the only one backstage to ever take Angle down.

On a plane ride, Angle decided to get his revenge and took Vince down in the aisle. McMahon then became obsessed with continuing this little feud and attempted to shoot on Angle every chance he got.

During one of the scuffles, their noise woke up a sleeping Undertaker. Taker obviously did not realize McMahon and Angle were just fooling around, so he grabbed Kurt from behind and promptly choked him out.

He sure is. Another funny Curt-related story that lead to a legit fight happened in the AWA when Vader was wrestling as Bull Power. Former heavyweight boxer, Scott LeDoux was also part of the AWA locker room, challenging future AWA World Champion, Larry Zybsko around the country in some boxer vs. wrestler bouts.

An argument pursued after a card, where Vader refused to sign autographs.

"Sign for the kids," LeDoux demanded. "You think you're too good to sign for the kids?"

Vader made some comment about LeDoux "getting his ass beat in boxing all the time."

LeDoux responded by knocking Vader's NFL career, "you did great at college, but you couldn't do shit with the big guys, yer chicken shit..."

Vader retaliated, "You got your ass beat by eight World Champions, you couldn't beat nobody..."

Marty Jannetty tried to defuse the situation, "I'll sign autographs, I'll do it for you," as Vader and LeDoux were preparing for a fight.

Things were starting to calm down, but Curt Hennig started being typical Curt and quickly brought the topic up again before things could calm down and began egging Vader on and said, "I think you should sign autographs Leon!"

LeDoux agreed with Hennig, and this got Vader and LeDoux arguing again. (Curt, you evil bastard. )

Vader shouted to LeDoux - "I fought a a boxer before, I'll fight you."

LeDoux shot back with "I'd love to knock you out."

Finally, Shawn Michaels managed to calm the two behemoths down.

The next day, the AWA stars had a flight to catch; Vader and LeDoux were jawing at each other again. That night in the dressing room, Scott was screaming, as his and Vader's Gucci bags had been locked together *perfectly*, and the two had to walk through the airport resembling a couple!

Guess who screwed with their bags....

I'm starting to wonder why anybody would fucking trust and/or listen to Curt Hennig backstage. You figure after the first few blood feuds, you'd notice the common denominator.

the funniest Rib that I have seen has to be from Foleys book where Austin and Foley put cookies in DDPs hotel bed.

I forget the motives behind it, but I just remember reading that part of the book and laughing my ass off for a long time.

Here's Bad News Brown telling the Andre the Giant story -

Speaking of Andre -

The story is, this turned into a real fight because Andre wouldn't sell Maeda's moves. Andre was also told to embarrass Maeda in the ring and kick his ass because the staff thought Maeda was a jerk who needed his ass kicked.

Andre was drunk during this match. - That wasn't apart of the plan. Andre also went for Maeda's eyes, and drunk or not, Andre was a very big and very strong man who could seriously hurt someone, so when Maeda saw Andre was not only not selling for him, but was hurting him for real as well, Maeda defended himself. It's hard to believe a man that small (compared to Andre) could hold his own so well against a giant.

The reason why the match wasn't stopped was because the idea was for Andre to kick Maeda's ass, and the staff was waiting for it to happen, but because Andre was drunk, he was having trouble. Also - Perhaps Andre is not as tough as some people think. At least not against guys who know how to fight well.

Maeda was kicking Andre's knee until it turned bright red and took him down rather easily a few times. He turned to Kantaro Hoshino and asked if he could finish him off and Hoshino shook his head "no." Maeda was pissed and threw a kick at the guard rail instead.

So in regards of Maeda - Rather he is a jerk or not, a man twice his size started a legit fight with him and Maeda was only trying to protect himself, and not seriously hurt Andre all at the same time. No easy task!

Yeah, that was in the summer of 1996. Brian Pillman returned to the ECW arena just week after breaking his foot in a Humvee accident. Pillman cut a promo in the ring where he made a reference to the NWA (the rap group, not the wrestling organization). To this day nobody expect New Jack is 100% on what he thought but it's believed that New Jack either misheard the comments or was misinformed by someone backstage but he went nuts backstage anyway talking about the infamous N-word. When Pillman came backstage, in his wheelchair mind you, both men got into a very heated confrontation where many believe New Jack would attack the crippled Pillman. To his credit, Pillman never backed down to anything. New Jack threatened to leave the company over the incident and Pillman never went back to work for ECW ever again. Days later, Pillman signed the first ever guaranteed contract issued by the World Wrestling Federation.
