KORN, LINKIN PARK Singers Offer Advice To New Bands: 'Find Your Own Style'

KORN's Jonathan Davis and LINKIN PARK's Chester Bennington recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the hundreds of bands that have copped their sound in the years since their came out with their first albums. "It fucking sucks," Davis said. "At first, it was totally flattering. The first time I remember was the SEPULTURA 'Roots' record, the one Ross [Robinson] did. I sat there with my fucking jaw on the floor, like, 'You gotta fucking be kidding me!' But I looked up to SEPULTURA way back when, so it was kind of flattering. Then a gazillion copycats copped the sound too. It makes music suck. It's like, go find your own fucking style. We found one. LINKIN found one. And Chester, if I was you, I'd be beating EVANESCENCE's ass."

"It's funny," Chester said. "I met them [EVANESCENCE] in the studio when they were recording their record. We were both recording in the same building. I was talking to [singer Amy Lee]. And she was nice. She said, 'We're having these problems. Everyone at our label wants us to be you.' I told her that's lame. She agreed. She said they went as far as wanting to ask Mike [Shinoda, LINKIN PARK's second singer] to do a part on a song. She said, 'We knew he wouldn't do it.' So they're running around trying to get guys in other bands to do it like he would. ' I told her to be herself and tell the label to put it where the sun doesn't shine. But the next thing I heard was 'Bring Me to Life' with a guy that sounded just like Mike. It was a little upsetting."

----

Korn and Linkin Park complaining about other bands not being original. That's rich.

Unfortunately, so are they.

It's really funny. The guy from 12 Stones sounds nothing like Mike Shendoa. Wonder if Chester thinks they invented rapping in the middle of a sung piece. It's not like it was done by funk, ska, R&B and such bands in the 70s, Boy Bands/Aerosmith&Run DMC in the 80s, or Jaye Muller and several hair metal-esque bands in the 90s. I fucking HATE the song in question, but I'm also realistic, and Chester's a moron.

They know they didn't invent rapping over rock, in fact they have a whole song about how people think they are original because of such things. They didn't create their genre but I do think they both helped mold it into their own style.

Uhhhh...If you say so.

Doesn't explain his comments. The only thing the guy on BMBTL has in common with Shendoah is that they both rap on their respective tracks. In fact, you'd have more ground to stand on (though not a Hell of a Lot) if you compared him to Disturbed's frontman.

Differences:
  1. Style: The rapping/male vocals are decidedly stlistically different.
  2. Right Place, Right Time: Mike's vocals never seem out of place. The male vocals to BMBTL sound like they were tacked on as an afterthought, and are totally out of place
  3. Content: For the most part, the 12 stones guy is only there as background. He gets one major part during the bridge, which becomes a duet instead of a backup deal. Well, we all know Mike's just a backup singer, right? Which is why we have songs like Papercut, In the End, A Place For My Head, and so on.
Yeah. So very identical.

Of course, Chester has come off in my eyes as not musically knowledgable. He talks about how he was special to LP because he could sing in the keys they were writing in. Newsflash, most of the music you write isn't really in awkward keys, and a LOT of people tune in drop D so they CAN get their vocal range to mesh with a guitar.

Maybe hes just not musically competent to understand the difference between the two.

Roots isn't really a nu-metal record. It's just Ross Robinson's mixing. Saying they took something from Korn bar a producer is bullshit.

Inherrent knowledge, baby.

I was able to understand rock tunes when I was like 5.

I learned to compose before I ever touched an instrument.

I've been writing songs on a serious level since the age of 12.

I've taken years of theory which has lead to both dcritical and technical understanding with which I view all music, without even having to really think about it.

Music is, like, the one thing I can truly said to love. It's going to be my profession, and it's been integral to my life. It's natural that I would develop the capacity to break down music without much effort.

Keep in mind also that one of the songs being compared is one I almost never listen to. This isn't an issue of spending a lot of time studying, it's from sheer memory of the merits and flaws inherrent in the Evanescence single.

Anyways...The breakdown...

Style: I don't know what's difficult to understand. Mike's rhymes generally utilise strong rhyme schemes and interesting play on meter (Now I'm getting technical). The 12 Stones guy was pretty strainghtforward and bland, with a more "sung" or "sing song" rapping style. Mike's not exactly brilliant or anything, but he's miles ahead of the competition here.

Fit: This is a matter of opinion, but again, not tthat technical. From a artist/producer's point of view, it feels forced, and tacked on. It feels like it has fuck all to do with the song.

Content: Surely I'm not stretching into technical expertise when I mention that Mike Shendoa is a lead vocalist, and not a backup singer. Words like Chorus and Bridge, similarly, should not be that alien.

All in all, it's about styles. Or lack of. The two acts are decidedlydifferent stylistically, though I find neither to be über original. To use better examples, it's like comparing Mozart to Chopin, Monk to Benny Goodman, The Beatles to the Beach Boys, The Who to Queen, Aerosmith to Boston...NWA to The Fresh Prince...Etc.

Korn are hardly one to talk anyway, one good album, one decent but rushed album, one hit album, then 3 albums of utter mediocrity. mediocrity is complimenting them as well, I've liked nothing at all from the last 2 albums.

He was just angrily shouting. Growling = Suffocation, Malevolent Creation, Amon Amarth, Carcass... Sure, Max was very harsh in his singing, but it wasn't growling.

Max does not growl.

I thought Korn were awesome up to Follow the Leader, then went downhill with Issues and Untouchables, but have risen with Take A Look in the Mirror.

Korn did usher in a new generation of bands. There's no denying their influence, even if they did bring in several terrible bands.

Linkin Park are just little boys trying to be angry.

Fixed it.

Anyway, Linkin Park also ushered in a lot of new bands. Whiny, angsty, crappy, emogrrrrl shit, So that argument's kinda fucked unless you want to talk about LP's influence too.

Remember, not only the bands you like are influential.

Linkin Park are the reason I don't listen to rock radio stations anymore. Everything I hear sounds like them. I don't even know if it is them or other bands anymore.

That would kind of speak to their massive influence, then, no?

As long as there's the whiny, angst ridden teenager demographic to market it to.
