I just heard the new Children of Bodom songs.
R.I.P. Children of Bodom 1997-2004
"Trashed, Lost, and Strungout" has a few of those "hardcore" riffs and breakdowns. Alexi's solo is the most generic piece of shit I've ever heard. The only redeeming parts of the song is the melody before the verse [which wouldn't sound out of place on Follow the Reaper] and Janne's solo. The verse sounds exactly like the verse to the title track on Hate Crew Deathroll, though. The guitars are tuned down to somewhere around C. At some points, they don't even sound in tune. I don't know if it's because the version I have isn't CD quality, but it sounds like Alexi uses vocal effects. Rating: 2/10 "Knuckleduster" is a fucking joke. Does anyone remember the verse of "The Quiet Place" by In Flames? [chugga chug] [some lyrics] [chugga chug] [more lyrics]. Why would Children of Bodom rip off the worst In Flames song of all time? Right from the start, it was nothing but un-COB. The solo is NOT Alexi. The keyboards are NOT Janne. I'm all for a band trying to sound different [as they have done with every album], but this is a step in the In Flames direction. Oh yeah, the keyboards are out of place. The thing is, the keyboards are EVERYWHERE. Rating: Worst Children of Bodom song ever. Someone contact me when Alexi decides to utilize his writing abilities again. PS - Before anyone asks, this is not a joke. Children of Bodom's new EP is fucking terrible. I will not buy it. If their next album sounds anything like this EP, I will never attend a Children of Bodom concert again. The mighty continue to fall... |

You had to have seen it coming... come on, Alexi jamming with fucking Andrew W.K and planning to cover one of his songs? FUCKING ANDREW WK???? I could smell shit from a mile away... I'm currently trying to find copies of the new songs to see whats goin on, but I still have a strand of hope concerning at least the Bed Of Nails cover.

I wonder if the two radio intermission tracks Knuckle Duster A & B from White Zombie's La Sexorcisto are more captivating than Bodom's Knuckleduster.
Where the hell did you find these songs? They aren't on soulseek, thats for sure. |

I went last week, I personally prefered God Forbid, Otep, Lacuna Coil, Bleeding Through, Atreyu, and Slipknot the most. Lamb Of God, Darkest Hour, and Unearth were all decent, worth a peek. The rest sucked. Beat the shit out of any hardcore kids at Ozzfest.

God Forbid are good live then? I really like their new album and I'd like to see them live.

Noooooo.
Ah well, there will always be good metal, whether it comes from CoB or not. BTW, someone give me money so I can buy Something Wild and Tokyo Warhearts. |

The only band mentioned in this thread that I'd pay any money to see is Darkest Hour. I've seen my share of COB concerts, and their setlists can only get worse if this bullshit is their future.

The songs aren't that bad IMO... they aren't typical Bodom amazing musicianship, but they aren't as terrible as In Flames. It's a rawer sound. I'd say they are experimenting with a different style, not selling out or being lazy. I can still see elements of creativity and skill in both songs... stop being so cynical. Bodom aren't dead.

These are the first two Bodom songs I ever so much as disliked. Every single song before this was at least "great". "Trashed" is very poor, even by any random band's standards. Knuckleduster is just pure shit. I watched the band evolve from melodic black metal to symphonic speed metal to semi-thrash metal to whatever the fuck this is. They've experimented with plenty of styles, and they've always turned out good [but not exactly marketable to the mainstream]. Alexi hit gold with Sixpounder [everyone's favorite Bodom video] with the downtuned riff. There's nothing raw about tuning to C and banging on a few power chords.
Sure, they're not as terrible as In Flames, but In Flames took a few steps down to where they are now. Children of Bodom took a swan dive from the summit of metal down to the pits of The Quiet Place riffing. If their next full length album kicks ass, I'll forgive them completely. I said that about In Flames, too. I said that about Kreator, and they got their act together and came back with a vengeance. Megadeth delivered, too. The difference between a band like Kreator and a band like In Flames is that In Flames' style is in right now. They won't be "going back to their roots" until nobody cares about them. I fear for Children of Bodom's future. |

I just saw the video for Trashed, Lost & Strungout. The good sound quality makes it a lot better, but the bad parts are that much worse. That hardcore breakdown in the middle of the song is fucking heartbreaking. If they'd just tune their guitars back up, get rid of that hardcore breakdown, and have Alexi redo his solo, this song would be really good. I now upgrade it and give it a 4/10. Every single COB song before this one gets at least a 7/10, mind you.
Knuckleduster, on the other hand... |

I'm telling you, the Bed Of Nails cover should make up for it. Alice Cooper rules.

A song 10x the greatness of Hallowed Be Thy Name wouldn't outweigh the atrocity that Knuckleduster is.
