Looks like the Bears might be having an issue with their RBs as the team gets Micheal Bush and it ended up upsetting Forte.

He's upset that the team doesn't want to commit to a new deal with him and instead keep going out and getting more RBs either to replace Forte or pressure him into accepting a worse deal.

Senator Dick Durbin out of Illinois is setting up a Judiciary Committee about the Saints' bounty program. He wants guys from the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA and NCAA there.

I'll give C-SPAN a few hours of my time for that.

Could someone help me understand:

a) Knowing your team of *professionals* tried to dish out career/health threatening injuries for extra money = year suspension. Also, people saying this is "too severe" of a punishment, as he's being made an example of in light of all the concussion talk.

b) Knowing your team of *students* gave out worn jerseys for extra tattoos = loss of job. Also, people saying the punishment was not severe enough and the school should suffer the "death penalty", thus losing the ability to even have a football team because of it.

I know the leagues are different, but something has to be said for our sports culture when college kids doing something stupid for money or benefits is seen worse than people who are supposed to be pros getting extra cash to try and hospitalize another man.

I don't believe pro athletes are overpaid. If you consider how much money they make for their team, league, and companies they get pretty fair payment. Remember, for every $10,000,000 contract there is a guy making a 10th of that or less depending on sport.

The deal with the Saints is more about them blatantly lying to the NFL about stopping the bounty system.

The average career for RB's is only around 8-9 seasons anyway. You have to figure that's a lot of wear and tear on these guys. Still odd though considering the NFL is a passing leauge now.

Guess that means MJD has 1 or 2 more years left in him.

That's so true. I guess I just never really paid attention to it. It feels like guys like LT, Brandon Jacobs, etc... have been playing for awhile, but when you look at the numbers, they all seem to peak around age 28 or 29.

It makes it easier to understand why a guy like Forte is pissed about getting the franchise tag. Backs really only have one shot at the big money contract. Seems like such a small window for a key position.

If you break it down even further, only 3 to maybe 4 years would be considered their prime earning years which is why a majority of startng RBs try to get that mega deal as early as possible into their career.

Forgot to add a little tidbit of news with the earlier post but according to today's Mike and Mike in the Morning's show, the number of players to get suspended and/or fined from Bounty-gate could reach the 40s to 50s range. NFL is allowing the NFLPA to review the players in question and help out in determining the level of punishment needed.

If you think they're overpaid stop watching the games, buying merchandise, or buying tickets. Maybe you don't do all of those things but they wouldn't be paid that much if the market didn't demand it.

Yeah that sucks. Especially since rookie contracts are less now under the new CBA and if a good back holds out in year 4 or 5 of his deal he'll be made to look like a bad guy. Plus, even after that contract expires the team can just put a franchise tag on him for the next 3 seasons. By the time he's an unrestricted free agent, he's been used up.

I wonder what "expert" came up with those figures. Not digging at you Smelly, it's just over these past couple of weeks it's been glaringly obvious that these guys don't know any more than we do about what's going on in the NFL. I only trust IncarceratedBob now.

They'll probably suspend guys like Vilma who were clearly the ringleaders, but if that many players were suspended it would create huge headaches. Like, it wouldn't necessarily be justice if current players like Scott Fujita were fined or suspended but then you have a potential hall of famer like Darren Sharper escaping punishment because he's retired. What do you do, add a year on the amount of time that must pass before Sharper is eligible?

Are players who weren't on the team the last two seasons going to be suspended for their participation three years ago before Saints officials were warned or lied to the NFL? What about teams like the Broncos who sign free agents from that team like Tracy Porter. If Porter gets suspended for half a year, would the Broncos be able to get out of that deal?

I just think it would be really hard to custom tailor punishment for 50 guys and still make it fair across the board. I believe punishing the coaches and the known organizers on the players side will probably be enough. I doubt anyone who ever played a down on that defense during that time will get served.

If Dick Durbin has this judicial hearing and calls Greg Williams to testify, won't they make him document every bounty system he ever implemented? Won't that drag the Redskins into this and make the commissioner have to open them up for review? Shit might hit the fan.

Yeah, I get that, but my point was that this is being treated like this is a frivolous and overly punitive punishment for a guy who knew about and lied about stopping an institution that *encourged* people to ignore safety of other players on opposing teams as opposed to knowing and just not telling that some of your players sold some autographs. No steroids, no cheating, no bounty system... just extra benefits for a few student athletes.

You're hearing a lot about how "violence is part of the game... bla bla bla..." and that this isn't as disgusting as it sounds, and that the only reason why Peyton got a year suspension instead of a few games is because of all the concussion heat about in the league right now and someone like a Manning or a Favre being a target for pass rushers looking for bonus dollars. Almost as if the thought is "yeah, it's bad, but it's not THAT bad."

This, as opposed to Tressel possibly knowing and not telling that some of his students traded autographs and clothes and jerseys and shit like that in exchange for getting some ink done and a little cash. People treated that as if Ohio State were the goddamn devil, an unconscinable black eye to the sport, and that just asking for the resignation of the coach and suspending players for games and losing future scholarship spots and vacating wins wasn't nearly enough.

There seems to be an imbalance in that logic - that promoting a system of injuring people for extra cash isn't nearly as bad as turning a blind eye to a couple kids ebaying their signature - and I was merely pointing that out.

I swear, I am going to try my hardest to get into football this year. Now that I understand how the game works, learning the players and their roles is the hard part.

Kinda torn though, both reasons I watched the Colts are now gone. Still going to support them but really going to hope Peyton does well elsewhere.

Sanders and Manning. I tend to find a player I like and then cheer for the team they are on. Happened with Hasek in the NHL before he retired. Not likely to happen here as I don't feel the connection I did with Hasek in the way I idolized the man.

Maybe you've got different sources than me, but based on what I've read and in my humble opinion, I don't think very many people outside of the Saints and a few idiot former players are that opposed to the punishments. Also, most analysts I've heard attribute the severity to the fact that he continued to allow the program to exist and lied to the Commissioner's office moreso than potential player lawsuits or who were targeted.

a tenth of that 10,000,000 is still 100,000 which is under the league minimum i believe... so no, noone should feel sorry for nfl players saying they dont get enough money because if they manage their money right, they will be set for life

I hear a lot of people complain about how much athletes make, so if you are so opposed to how much they make: don't watch it, don't buy tickets, don't buy clothes, don't do shit, and ask others to do the same. I will say that I have no clue how these MLB teams afford the contracts because only like 8 teams actually put asses in seats.

Where else are they going to make that sort of money though? Even if they made $250,000 a year, that's far more than what most of them could get with their communication or kinesiology degrees. The reason why they pay them so much money is because it adds to the appeal of the sport. It makes the game appear 'larger than life' when you see these physical freaks who make unbelievable amounts of money beat up each other. Without the huge contracts the big sports franchises don't look any better than Major League Soccer or some other second rate organization. All it is is a really ostentatious marketing gimmick.

Yes, the owners of these teams shell out millons upon millions in contracts just for marketing. That is why they did it from the beginning.

Obviously there's a lot more to it than that, but I do think that's one facet of it which has evolved in the last 20-30 years. I'm talking about in terms of Free Agency more than anything else. Your teams signs someone like Alex Rodriguez or Julius Peppers to an absurd amount of money, which in turn brings a bunch of attention to the team because he appears like a much watch player due to how much money was spent on him.
