Lakers beat Clippers 99-92 in season opener

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Kobe Bryant(notes) slipped the ring on in the locker room, his finger weighed down by the 14 brilliant white diamonds set in yellow and white gold.

Then he took it off and returned it to the custom box that would soon end up stored for years to come in a vault at home.

“I never wear them except for the night that I get them,” he said Tuesday after the Lakers opened defense of their NBA championship with a 99-92 victory over the Clippers. “It’s on to the next one.”

Bryant scored 33 points and Andrew Bynum(notes) added 26 on his 22nd birthday for the Lakers, who began the evening with a ceremony unveiling the franchise’s 15th gold-and-purple championship banner, earned four months ago after defeating Orlando in the finals.

Commissioner David Stern handed out rings to almost everyone except for Ron Artest(notes), who joined the Lakers in the offseason from Houston with the sole purpose of winning a gaudy bauble for himself. He traded places with Trevor Ariza(notes), who replaced him with the Rockets.

“It’s always tough to play games after those kind of ceremonies,” said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who added a record-breaking 10th ring to his collection. “Some of the energy is always difficult to maintain because there is a lot of energy that’s kind of dissipated when you go out and have that kind of ceremony. You’re not ready to step up and march to the tune of this season right yet.”

The last time the Lakers opened the season with a ring ceremony was 2002-03, when they lost 87-82 to San Antonio.

Hoping to erase the memories of last season’s 19-63 record, the Clippers got a jolt of bad news a day before the season began when they learned No. 1 overall draft pick Blake Griffin(notes) will be out for up to six weeks with a broken left kneecap. Dressed in a suit and tie, he watched from a seat behind the bench.

“We’ve got a good, deep team and we’ll win a bunch of ballgames while Blake is out,” guard Baron Davis(notes) said. “We really felt we could’ve won this game. If you take away a lot of mistakes that we made at the end of the first quarter and all the turnovers we had, it would’ve been a different ballgame. That’s just what happens when you play against a championship-caliber team.”

Eric Gordon(notes) scored 21 points for the Clippers, who lost their ninth in a row to the Lakers. Chris Kaman(notes) added 18 points and 16 rebounds, Marcus Camby(notes) had 14 points, and reserve Craig Smith(notes) 12. Davis was held to two points on 1 of 10 shooting while hampered by a bruised right foot that he soaked in ice afterward.

“I just couldn’t find the explosiveness I needed. I didn’t have the practice time, and this is the first time I’ve played on the foot,” he said. “It didn’t allow me to get to the bucket the way I wanted to. I didn’t have that pop. I was missing that last 20 percent.”

The Clippers kept it close at times, even if their only lead was by one early in the game. They trailed by 12 early in the third and closed to 76-75 on Camby’s alley-oop dunk at the end of the period.

“You just play with a sense of enjoyment. That carried us for the first half,” Bryant said. “The second half we just had to get to the grind a little bit more and tough this one out.”

The Lakers opened the fourth with an 10-2 run and soon pushed their lead to 89-79 on Lamar Odom’s(notes) 3-pointer, energizing a mostly blase crowd that included David Beckham, Jack Nicholson, Charlize Theron and Odom’s new wife, reality starlet Khloe Kardashian.

Bryant was 11 of 12 from the line and had eight rebounds, while Bynum was 8 of 10 on free throws and had 13 rebounds.

“I felt like we had control of the game, even when it was a one-point game,” Bryant said.

Artest scored 10 points in his debut in the starting lineup. Pau Gasol(notes) sat out with a strained right hamstring and was replaced by Odom, who had 16 points and 13 rebounds.

“Artest and Odom, they’re quick for the big guys and big for the small guys,” Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. “That’s the one area where we really do miss Blake. He’s our guy who can guard the quick big guys.”

The Clippers committed nine of their 20 turnovers in the first quarter when they trailed by 10, the same margin they were behind by at halftime.

Notes: Former Lakers GM Jerry West, along with Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Norm Nixon, Michael Cooper, Jamaal Wilkes, A.C. Green, Rick Fox and Robert Horry(notes), all of whom starred on the club’s title teams of the 1980s and earlier this decade, greeted the current team on the court during the pregame ring presentation. … Jackson said Gasol could return Friday against Dallas. … The Lakers improved to 13-4 in season openers at home since moving to Los Angeles. … The Clippers fell to 0-4 opening the season against the Lakers, with losses last year when they were the home team, in 1992, and 1979, when they played in San Diego. … Longtime Lakers consultant Tex Winter returned to visit and appeared in good form after recovering from a stroke in April.

I'm just pulling this number out of the air but I think it's a safe guess that 60% of the posts in last year's NBA thread had to do with the "Lake Show".

And most of the posts were meaningless recaps or about how "worried" sammyG was about the 12 man's negative x-rays on his sprained ankle.

I honestly would like you guys to post in here just as you would have posted in the NBA thread. And then use this data just as an experiment if anything else.

Nowitzki scores 21 in Mavs’ 94-80 victory over LA

By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP)—The Dallas Mavericks surprised themselves in a bad way with a season-opening loss at home. Then they hit the road and stunned the defending NBA champions.

Dirk Nowitzki(notes) scored 21 points and the Mavs were 25 of 32 from the free throw line, snapping a six-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Lakers with a 94-80 victory Friday night.

Nowitzki made 10 of 11 from the line and grabbed 10 rebounds, Shawn Marion(notes) added 18 points and Jason Terry(notes) 16 for the Mavs, who hadn’t defeated the Lakers at Staples Center since March 11, 2007.

“We haven’t won in this building in what feels like forever,” Nowitzki said. “We took that home loss pretty hard, almost felt embarrassed we came up flat in the season opener.”

Erick Dampier(notes) had 10 rebounds and Jason Kidd(notes) had 11 assists.

Kobe Bryant(notes) led the Lakers with 20 points. Andrew Bynum(notes) had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and reserve Shannon Brown(notes) added 12 points as the Lakers shot 39 percent from the floor.

“That was one of the longest nights we’ve had in this building,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “We should refund the money to our fans. Every time we got momentum we shot ourselves in our own foot.”

While the Mavs paraded to the line as the Lakers racked up 29 fouls, Los Angeles got there just 14 times, hitting nine shots.

The Lakers never made a run in the fourth, getting derailed by horrendous shooting and turnovers by Lamar Odom(notes), Josh Powell(notes) and Bryant. Their lone highlight was Brown’s thundering dunk off Bryant’s jumper that bounced off the rim. It got the crowd on its feet in a collective exclamation even with the Lakers trailing by 12.

The fans were on their feet again to hit the exits with three minutes remaining and the Mavs ahead 90-73.

“I liked the way we played from start to finish,” Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. “We had a real determined collective mindset and it showed how we played. We were very aggressive and it showed in the number of times we got to the line. This is going to be key to our success, if we’re persistent, especially at the defensive end.”

Dallas extended its lead to 73-54 in the third on a 13-2 run, with four points from Nowitzki and five by Terry. Two free throws and a driving layup by Jose Barea later gave Dallas its largest lead of 22 points. Barea finished with 12 points.

“It’s a big win character-wise because we had a flat game opening at home,” Kidd said of the Mavs’ 102-91 loss to Washington. “It helps us gain confidence on the road that we can play with the best.”

The Lakers were called for two technicals, including Ron Artest’s(notes) first of the season moments after he was whistled for his fourth foul and went to the bench. Jackson brought back Brown and Jordan Farmar(notes), who were productive during the second quarter, but it didn’t help. The Lakers scored just 15 points in the period and trailed 78-60 going into the fourth.

“We probably wanted it a little too much and that’s what resulted in some of the turnovers, shots going in and out,” Bryant said. “You’ve got to get stops. Keep teams off the free throw line. We were just a little stagnant, but it will be better.”

The Mavericks led 52-45 at halftime, helped by 15 of 18 free-throw shooting. Jackson went deep into his bench in the second quarter, bringing in Brown, Farmar and Luke Walton(notes) for a stretch against the Mavs’ second unit.

Brown was especially effective, scoring 10 points, and Bynum added eight to draw Los Angeles into a tie at 37, with Bryant returning during that run. But the Mavs dominated the final 4 1/2 minutes, outscoring the Lakers 15-8.

Notes: Lakers F Pau Gasol(notes) missed his second game with a strained right hamstring. The team is hopeful he can return Sunday against Atlanta. … The Mavs were without F Josh Howard(notes) (left ankle surgery) and F Tim Thomas(notes) (right knee surgery).

Oh bummer

Laker Lovers Letting Loose a Little Lethargy

After a 118-110 victory over the Atlanta Hawks yesterday, the retarded, arrogant, and usually Mexican fanbase of the Los Angeles Lakers stunned the world with feelings of indifference about the win. Normally, such a trouncing over a lesser opponent this early in the season would result in Laker fans boasting about how the Lakers are determined to go 82-0 and win the championship. HOWEVER, after the complete domination over the Atlanta Hawks, Lakers fan GammyG had this to say:

Quote:

INCREDIBLE.
Why would such a dedicated fan be so nonchalant over such a decisive win? Not only a decisive win but PERHAPS the biggest win in Los Angeles Lakers' historythis early in the season. Could it be because he is not confident in his team's ability to repeat as champions? Perhaps he even doubts their chances of winning their division?

The Lakers News Network would love to hear from their readers over this matter. Do you sense a feeling of worry over SammyG's response? Or do you feel as if his feeling have not changed and it is an act of cockyness? As if the Laker's are entitled to destroy the Hawks upon every meeting?

Pau's Possible Problems Pissing off Peice of shit Poster

The Lakers News Network has just learned that SammyG, longtime fan of the Lakers and homophobia, fears for that the Los Angeles Lakers' season may be doomed if the return of Pau does not happen soon. When asked to comment further on the sleezy Spaniard's strained hamsting, SammyG had this to say:

Shit Expert Knows Shit When Sees Shit

TPWW resident Mexican poster and Laker fan "Jaun" was unimpressed with the Los Angeles Lakers 2nd unit during their game against the Atlanta Hawks. He was overheard with having this to say:

Quote:

And just who exactly is this man to be commenting on fecal matter? TLNN has learned that Jaun has a master's degree in Shitmastery and that he loves all kinds of bad shit. Being Mexican, he frequently deals with shit in his pants and feels the 2nd unit did not handle the situation properly. When asked to comment further on how the bench could possibly "get their shit together properly", Jaun left no comment. However, TLNN experts assume that he would suggest a large trash bag. Much like how a landscaper would collect leaves or how a maid would collect dirty laundy or how a busboy would collect trash.

Would YOU Like To Become a TLNN Reporter?

The Lakers News Network is now hiring correspondents from around the globe. There aren't that many requirements. Simply have a catchy title for your article, and a quote from a Lakers poster. And treat every article like it's the most important article in the world. And then end your article with likea "email us at ____ for your take on the matter" or like twitter feed or something like that.

Because this is fun but I don't wanna be the only one doing it all season. Let's all chip in and try to outdo each other.

Covert Conversation w/ Co-Cocksuckers Convey Concedement of Season to Show-Stopping S

This just in: TLNN investigators have been deep undercover for weeks now infiltrating the smelly, illegal, and brown fanbase of the Los Angeles Lakers. After days upon days of mindless jibber jabber of some type of lake shows, TLNN has finally stumbled upon an earth shattering conversation. Just listen to these to these two fans, whose identity has been kept secret, discuss their feelings of doubt toward the rest of the season...

UNBELIEVABLE! After days of TLNN investigating whether or not Lakers fans were "pieces of shit", we now have a CLEAR ADMISSION by a Lakers fan HIMSELF! Amazing.

And not only did we discover their lack of optimism for the rest of the season, but TLNN has also learned of a possible civil war between Laker fans. How will sides be chosen? We're not sure just yet.

TLNN investigators will continue to follow this story by hanging out near the local hardware store with their noses plugged and in full camo gear with sweat-stained caps, flannel shirts, and sprayed on brown skin.

Homophobic Fan Finds Feelings of Infaturation w/ African-American Forward

In Love and Relationship news, TLNN has discovered that the fag-hating SammyG currently finds Laker forward Ron Atest to be "Sexy" and "Attractive". We are getting unconfirmed reports that he also said he would love Artest to "slide his big black cock in and out of my asshole so it gets all shitty and then I would love to lick it clean".

These reports, however, are unconfirmed. Although, he was quoted as saying this:

Pivot Points: "Kobe Or LeBron" Is No Debate At All

LOS ANGELES, CA - In the same manner in which Kobe Bryant was unfairly compared to Michael Jordan in the late 90's, the debate continues with LeBron James being similarly compared to Kobe.

Some fans and pundits have even had the temerity to go as far as saying that James has already surpassed Bryant as a player.

They re-inforce their arguments with statistics and the many milestones that James has accomplished at such an early age. Many of these same milestones are marks that Kobe held until James surpassed them.

There are areas of the game where James holds an advantage over Kobe, most noticeably the physical specimen department, but most arguments are based on the potential of James and not his current accomplishments.

The only problem with gazing into the crystal ball is that sometimes the present intervenes and renders all predictions useless. It's much better to live in the present, and based on that, the James argument doesn't hold up.

While both James and Bryant are great players, there are some areas that James has yet to catch up, and in some cases he never will.

The part of LeBron's game that has seen the biggest improvement is on the defensive end. He is still a much better help defender than ball defender, but his man to man defense is steadily improving.

As a youngster James was able to rely on his superior athletic ability to mask his shortcomings on the defensive end. He was simply able to overwhelm opponents with his quickness, size, and strength.

It was clear early in his career that he had the proper defensive principles, but he lacked the technique. His defensive posture was bad, and he had a habit of crossing his feet instead of sliding them.

James has taken steps to correct this and it's evident in his game, as he has become a better on ball defender which helps compliment his superior ball-hawking skills.

Kobe had no such problem, as he was an excellent defensive player from the time he entered the league. His man-to-man skills remain superb, and he has the ability to lock down an opponent almost at will.

Bryant was obviously schooled on the importance of defense and that can in part be attributed to his NBA lineage. He recognized the influence that getting stops has on a game and the way it contributed to swings in momentum.

Conversely, James is a product of the AAU circuit and the various summer leagues which place a low premium on defense and emphasize the highlight aspect of the game.

Michael Jordan's footprints are all over another aspect of Kobe's game, which is sometimes called the lost art of the mid-range jump shot.

It became the most dangerous weapon in Jordan's arsenal, and Bryant has emulated it to the barest degree. His ability to pull up from anywhere within 18 feet has made Bryant one of the most versatile offensive players in NBA history.

This is the part of LeBron's game that could use the most work, as all of his damage is done either from distance or at the rim, there is hardly any in-between.

A mid-range jumper is something that you have to work at, and the evidence is spread throughout the league, with only a handful of players showing the ability to master it.

Besides being the ultimate student of the game, Bryant is probably one of the most fundamentally sound. His techniques on both ends of the floor could be used in basketball tutorials.

James is no slouch in the fundamental department, but Bryant is above reproach. I'm not sure if even the most dedicated regimen could put James in Bryant's class, who may be second only to Jordan himself.

I feel that all of the above points are solid, but they can be argued, alas this one can't. The hardware disparity is real and it has grown since James has been in the league.

I have stated that it is fruitless to argue what James may accomplish in the future because we live in the present. The Kobe and Jordan argument would have never started if Kobe was unable to win a ring.

Charles Barkley and Karl Malone are considered two of the best power forwards to play the game, but they are trumped by Tim Duncan, and the argument will always end with the number of rings Duncan is wearing.

Likewise with John Stockton and Magic Johnson. Stockton may hold the assists record, but how many of those assists ever accounted for championships?

This is the final peg on which Kobe hangs his hat. LeBron has the potential to be the greatest player ever, but tomorrow is never promised.

I pay homage to the greatest active player today, who has the game and championships to back it up. Until LeBron wins a ring he will be relegated to second-hand status.

Didn't read the whole thing but I'm going to assume they forgot to mention that the Lakers during Kobe's early years were much stronger than Cavs during Lebron's early years. Instead of Kobe having to do all the work, he got a decent amount of years to develop so once the string of titles ended, Kobe was ready to take over the team.

Compare that to Lebron, who needed to do almost everything on the team. As a result, Lebron had to focus more on individual than team for his play style and was missing a key player or coach to help develop his team style.

TLNN is looking fort the location of this imaginary hornet's nest (possibly located in Lamar's linebacker's pants)
