I thought Ryan Ward was the lead writer as well, but a trip over to Wikipedia challenged that. It lists a guy named Steven Guerrieri as the lead writer for SmackDown. Ward is listed as a writer for RAW, SmackDown and Total Divas.

I'd like to see the personalities in on-air authority roles actually get some sort of creative input (and I'm sure they do, to some extent). Mick and Dewey writing RAW with whatever influences they want to contact (Heyman?) with Shane and Bryan running SmackDown with this Guerrieri fella, since he seems to be doing a decent job.

I was falling asleep, but I generally thought that SmackDown was pretty good. It fell into a few of the traps I really hate. What was the main event going to be before AJ Styles & partner vs. John Cena & Dean Ambrose was signed? But I LOVED their interaction at the start of the show. Even Shane McMahon wasn't annoying and played his part well.

The women's match was pretty good. They seem to work best when they all get limited shine like that. Becky Lynch has been Alexa Bliss' best opponenet so far, so hopefully Becky can drag something fun and watchable out of her at No Mercy. Bliss keeping the Harley Quinn look should be saved for PPVs I think. I'm already getting too used to it. Strike while the iron is hot though, I guess.

Seems like promos were "less scripted" this week. Everybody did a pretty decent job. I worry for Jack Swagger, by getting a more organic look is a step in the right direction. Something about it still seems "phony," but I like the way he kept the "We the People" element but was basically this corn-fed boy from Oklahoma. I've got no clue who they put him against though. Feed him jobbers for a while? I agree with whoever says he needs his old theme back though. "Patriot" was really good for that gimmick, but this incarnation of him needs "Get Down On Your Knees" back. They also need to get him out of a singlet. It doesn't matter if he's not super-chiseled -- the guy would look more brutish in something else. On a side -- I still think that Luke Harper/Jack Swagger would be an amazing incarnation of a Wyatt Family tag team.

Maybe it's because I've never been too into Bray Wyatt, but I'm still generally pretty interested in him. I hope he beats Orton at No Mercy. I agree with JR when he says that his true potential is as a babyface. That doesn't mean they have to job him as a heel though. A clean win over Orton will allow people to start taking him seriously which will be good for a babyface turn. Triple H vs. Bray Wyatt is still the most interesting Triple H match I can think of.

JBL and David Otunga kinda both need to get off commentary though. Mauro and Daniel Bryan would be the right guys to call SmackDown. JBL can be the General Manager that works with Shane. Maybe Bryan forfeits his position because The Miz starts getting to him?JBL could be hilarious on Talking Smack too, if he's allowed to just be himself.

He's fine, but it's unnecessary. Babyface color is really hard to do and just adds clutter. Plus he's put some of the talent in some bad situations. That line a few weeks ago (maybe even at Backlash) where he called the match "must win" for Becky Lynch. Ooh. Don't do that.

Some of the things he says also aren't historically accurate. There was something specific he said on SmackDown that irked me, but I can't remember exactly what it was. He uses his voice well, is working hard and could potentially turn out to be great. Some of the things he says are actually pretty brilliant. But it's hit-and-miss. Far more miss than, say, Matt Striker ever was.

They should give Otunga more time to develop a commentary presence on Superstars and NXT. Graves can be on RAW, Otunga can do NXT and Superstars, Bryan can be on SmackDown, and King can do Main Event.

So many babyfaces say they're going to do something and then fail. How are people meant to seriously invest in them, buy their merchandise, etc.? It may not seem like a big deal right away, but imagine a little kid hearing "Becky Lynch needs to win this," then she fails. Who is going to bet the house on Becky in the future?

But Becky's not even the one who said it. Commentators talk rubbish all the time. I doubt a loss there would have dented her popularity based on his comment there.

I think if you have a prolonged program, it's perfectly fine for the face to faik to deliver in the short-term as long as they keep vowing not to give up or whatever and somehow succeed or win the feud in a decisive manner. It adds another layer to any feud and done right can make for some seriously compelling TV.

Failing to win is not the same as it being must-win and them losing. It's about knowing when the loss builds suspense and galvanizes the fans behind the talent, and when it's a death-blow to credibility.

You can save the condescending bullshit. It's not as important as you're making it out to be. It's like the stuff in the belt thread. If it's explained to you then you'll spin off into straw-man rhetoric about its importance. And that's fine. He's allowed to be fine -- he's new in the job. If you listen closely to his commentary, you can hear JBL and Mauro dig him out of holes quite a lot. He's just green, man. That's fine, but I'd rather he get his practice on Main Event or something instead of live television, because once people perceive someone as being shit, it's hard to shake that stigma.

I enjoy plenty of things in life. You mentioned sandwiches. Love them. Don't you dare try and project onto my relationship with sandwiches. I personally think wrestling is the most bland it has ever been, and Ruien is right, I do love wrestling and it has been a challenge to get through it over the past two years or so. You're allowed to like it, man, but I don't base my views off subjective feelings anymore. I no longer believe that a guy that does cool movez can necessarily been on top just because he's cool. I got so into this shit that I study what I can, listen to whoever I can with an opinion worth listening to, look for patterns and trends, and understand the psychology of how to draw people.

I enjoy listening to the Squared Circle Gazette guys analyze the Attitude era more than I enjoy seeing Kevin Owens flop around a ring these days. Go have your fun, but I'm not going to have mine the same way just because you like it.
