The most obvious speculation would be that, given the "he went home" thing.

The second most obvious speculation was that this was like a hit job... or something that targeted them, ala the Charles Manson / Sharon Tate thing (in a way).

What I don't get is there was a a family emergency before he even went home. So something bad happened before he got there and the fact that they all wound up dead just makes no sense. The only thing I can figure is if they were murdered the killers were harrassing his family and when he got home they killed him and his family.
