"Has any other sibling rivalry been this personal?"

Undertaker killed their parents and is responsible for Kane's physical disfigurement turned mental instability/self-image complex. Kane dug up corpses of said murdered parents. Undertaker promised not to fight Kane before he killed them. Kane forced Undertaker to break this promise after setting him on fire and attacking his casket with an axe. Pretty damn personal. Matt did kill Jeff's dog and try and set him on fire with pyro though.

WWE should put MITB back into a WrestleMania mainstay. It is an awesome opener.

WWE Network has reminded me how much I loved Orton from 2003-08. He is an awesome cocky shithead heel. "Grrr Angry" Orton sucks. Sort of like how Goofy Kurt Angle is way better than "Wrestling Machine" Kurt Angle.

Finally getting around to NXT Arrival now. Cesaro/Zayn was pretty good. The referee was kind of shitty, though. His cadence was almost always fucked up.

The Wall chokeslammed Bam Bam through a table and then chokeslammed Crowbar 20 ft off the TurnerTron scaffolding through the floor. Both got taken out in ambulances. Brian Knobbs is interviewed next by Mean Gene and dedicates his Hardcore Title match against 3 Count to Bam Bam and Crowbar. Knobbs is facing 3 Count in a hardcore gauntlet match and is trying to regain his title. The announcers are still in shock over the carnage in the last match.

One guy in 3 Count is wearing Zorro masks for some reason. (Edit: Apparently he has a broken nose.)

Knobbs has eliminated 2 of the 3 members of 3 Count. HE IS A WARRIOR! exclaims Mark Madden. Also, this is a 3-on-1 elimination hardcore match moreso than a gauntlet match. Shannon Moore pinned Knobbs after Helms illegally attacked Knobbs. Knobbs' foot was on the rope so the match is restarted. The announcers applaud the referee's decision.

Knobbs wins the title after landing a 2nd rope trash can diving splash. Announcers are in awe of Knobbs. Schiovanie says "What a series of bumps that was!" Apparently Knobbs had a broken arm during this match. Announcers putting over Knobbs huge. RIP 3-Count.

Booker about to compete. He has new entrance music. I guess he lost the music as well as the "T." in his name to New Harlem Heat?

God, New Harlem Heat has some young black lawyer on commentary with them. Young Black Lawyer does not care about what happened to Crowbar. He is doing the annoying "black preacher" stereotype voice.

Finlay is the heel apparently. Fuck Vampiro. I'm cheering for Finlay. Wish WWE would have dubbed over Finaly's WWE theme like they did Jericho's. Was hugely disappointed to hear "Break the Walls Down" instead of "Even Flowish Track #10" when watching Uncensored 99. Ralphus made up for it though. #RalphusShouldBeAtWrestleMania

Now that the WWE Network has seemingly worked out most of it’s streaming kinks for the majority of people out there (sorry Xbox 360 users who STILL cannot connect), it’s the perfect time to post some sort of guide to the plethora of World Championship Wrestling PPVs available on demand.

Instead of writing this myself, I asked Jason Mann of Wrestlespective, David McKinney of the South Atlanta Wrestling blog, and Brandon Baxter of Bushido Blog to help pitch in with their own five recommendations of what to seek out on the WWE Network. We all came up with our choices independent of one another and surprisingly, only had one PPV find itself showing up twice on our lists.

I guess we can count that as a double recommendation…

Great American Bash ‘89
This is probably the greatest pay-per-view I’ve ever seen, showcasing a vast arsenal of great wrestlers of many different styles. Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk in the first match of their classic feud, with both men still showing the stuff that made them NWA champions. Ricky Steamboat pulling a great match out of a game Lex Luger. A wild brawl between the Steiners and the Varsity Club. The mystique of the Great Muta battling rising star Sting. An intense War Games with Dr. Death, the Road Warriors, the Midnight Express, the Freebirds and the Samoan Swat Team. Two of the best managers ever in a tuxedo match. The birth of the Skyscrapers.

image

Beach Blast ‘92
Cactus Jack landed on a lot of people’s radars and brought the best out of Sting with a wild brawl. The Steiners collide with the Miracle Violence Connection. The future Raven and Brian Pillman battle for the light heavyweight title. The last gasp of the Dangerous Alliance. Plus, Ricky Steamboat and Rick Rude have the perfect iron man match. And for those of you who enjoy such things, Missy Hyatt and Madusa in a bikini contest.

image

Starrcade ‘96
WCW was still bustling from the early energy of the NWO storyline and its shows were lifted by the incredible international talent it had access to. The surprisingly spirited Hollywood Hogan vs. Roddy Piper brawl was the kind of main event that restored Starrcade’s place as WCW’s premier event. Plus, the Ultimo Dragon vs. Dean Malenko in a great showcase of state-of-the-art cruiserweight wrestling of the time, Jushin Liger vs. Rey Mysterio in a dream match, a fun Diamond Dallas Page vs. Eddie Guerrero encounter, and the Faces of Fear bringing the hoss fight to the Outsiders.

image

Souled Out ‘98
Even after the finish of Sting vs. Hogan took some of the starch of out WCW, it was still a place filled with hope and (often unrealized) potential. Bret Hart vs. Ric Flair was a simple yet effective battle of two icons, yet both were soon to be marginalized for the better part of the year. Chris Benoit finally gets his hands on Raven after months of chasing and seems ready for bigger and better things. Chris Jericho cements his turn toward the dark side by destroying Rey Mysterio’s knee. Dusty Rhodes joins the NWO, just because. Kevin Nash works really, really hard against the Giant, though he also drops him on his head. A crew of talented luchadores have a frenzied spotfest, exciting the crowd.

image

Spring Stampede ‘99
WCW was already well into its death spiral, but it still had enough talent to put on a mind-blowing wrestling show when it was focused. Even the main event, usually a weak point in late ’90s WCW, was a strong four-way with Diamond Dallas Page, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Sting (with a returning Randy Savage as ref). The rest of the show featured standout cruiserweight matches (Rey Mysterio vs. Kidman and Juventud Guerrera vs. newcomer Blitzkrieg), a well-constructed hardcore match (Hak vs. Bam Bam), a heated tag match between longtime rivals (Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko vs. Raven and Saturn), and another match with great effort from Kevin Nash (vs. Goldberg, sort of a return from Starrcade ‘98).

Starrcade 1997
I consider this the beginning of the end for WCW with the questionable booking of Sting vs Hogan. The involvement of Bret Hart is an interesting component of this show. In what could have really been WCW’s knockout blow to Vince and WWE you get to see one of WWE’s biggest stars go from the Montreal Screwjob to arguably WCW’s biggest event ever. Beyond that you get to see Eric Bischoff get his comeuppance at the hands of “The Living Legend” Larry Zbyszko. What you don’t see on this show is The Giant vs Kevin Nash. Depending what you want to believe, Kevin Nash was either dealing with a legitimate medical concern with his heart or simply did not want to do the J.O.B. to The Giant. In place of that match we get an impromptu showdown between Scott Hall and The Giant which is quite entertaining. This show captures everything that was right and wrong within WCW. No viewing of high-profile WCW shows is complete without Starrcade 1997.

image

Hog Wild
Eric Bischoff is a lot of things, but afraid to take chances is absolutely not one of them. An example of this is the Hog Wild PPV which emanated from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. The visual of a ring surrounded by bikers: who revved their engines in lieu of cheering, is reason enough to give this show a look. While WCW returned to the Rally the event was renamed Road Wild due to a potential trademark issue with Harley-Davidson. The reason this Hog Wild/Road Wild is the one to watch is because it was not only the first, but it includes the coronation of the nWo’s Hollywood Hogan as WCW Champion. A post-main event angle with Ed Leslie as The Booty Man further sells the idea that the nWo is a ruthless group. In addition to the spectacle of the crowd and the importance of the main event there is good action underneath with an excellent Dean Malenko vs Chris Benoit match and Harlem Heat vs The Steiner Brothers for the WCW Tag Titles. If you are interested in seeing “Nature Boy” Ric Flair defend the US Title that happens here as well. Like many WCW cards at that time you got big happenings in the main events and exciting action in the undercard. Hog Wild delivers all of this great action in a unique environment.

image

Halloween Havoc 1992
“Spin the Wheel, Make a Deal” is a chant that has gone down in wrestling history. Jake “The Snake” Roberts’ arrival in WCW was a huge deal. The Snake sneaking out from the crowd and delivering DDT to Sting was a hot start to a promising feud. In a classic example of overthinking things, the WCW brain trust followed this up with bizarre promos featuring midgets and a wheel full of stipulations for the match. Was the wheel gimmicked? I’m not sure we know one way or the other, but we do know that the Coal Miner’s Glove match probably wasn’t high on the list of exciting matches fans wanted to see. The hokey way the match ended certainly didn’t help matters and that’s coming from someone who is a huge fan of both wrestlers. There are other interesting matches on this card such as Rick Rude vs Masahiro Chono for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. The introductions and having Harley Race and Kensuke Sasaki as special referees add an interesting atmosphere to that match. In a somewhat infamous title defense Ron Simmons defends his WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Barbarian. I recommend this show primarily because it is an interesting peek into that era in WCW. Any other PPV from this period will give you the same look, but the Spin the Wheel vignettes make this one special.

image

Halloween Havoc 1996
While it may be easy to dismiss Hogan vs Savage as a match between two guys past their primes WCW had done a heck of a job building this match. No one aside from Sting played a better foil for the nWo than the “Macho Man.” The match itself was an exercise in frustration with Nick Patrick’s crooked ref shenanigans, but business picked up before the show went off the air. The arrival of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper was an undeniably cool moment for WCW. The slow build of excitement as the bagpipes played and the announcers gave hints about what was to come really delivered. Once “Hot Rod” got in the ring you knew things were about to get even more interesting. “Do you know what bothers you? I’m the only guy you have never been able to beat.” Great mic work by Piper with that line for example. It’s hard to imagine praising a PPV that ends in an in-ring promo, but this one did and it completely worked. This confrontation setup an exciting new chapter in the battle between WCW and the nWo.

image

Fall Brawl 1996: War Games
Team nWo vs Team WCW in a War Games match. At the height of the nWo angle there’s not much better than that. Prior to the event Team WCW doubted Sting’s allegiance. This made the main event even more electric. Fake Sting’s appearance for Team nWo reveals the truth of Sting’s alleged betrayal however. The arena is red hot for the War Games match. Flair’s arrival in the cage alone is practically worth the price of admission. This match will confront you with the question, “Why was Lex Luger stuck between those rings for so long?” Light-hearted observations aside, this is the genesis for Sting’s big run leading up to Starrcade 1997. This is the foundation for one of the absolute greatest angles of the Monday Night Wars. This is one of my favorite War Games matches and is absolutely worth a look.

Starrcade 1995
Oh man what can I say?! It’s WCW/USA vs. NJPW/Japan for GLORY!! A seven match series for the “illustrious” World Cup of Wrestling. An award so “prestigious” it has yet to establish a Wikipedia page!! 80% of this PPV is built around the WCW/USA vs. NJPW/Japan competition, a real sports-oriented broadcast. Little things like, Tony Schiavone putting over game 7 and scorecard graphics prior to the matches, GOOD stuff!! Like all GOOD 80/90’s wrestling PPVs, a HIGH dosage of American patriotism and Western racism, stellar! For me, this was the first real introduction to NJPW and its talent. The guys seemed larger than life and defiantly had an aura, at least to an 8 year old. In ring work is decent, excellent story telling working the series to the full 7 matches. On this PPV Luger, Savage, Flair, Sting all work two matches. Solid Eddy Guerreo vs. Shinjiro Otani match. Sonny Onoo was ALL OVER this PPV including a pretty funny promo backstage with Mean Gene. Easily the best promo was Randy Savage who quotes Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, rocking the Big Gold Belt, so 1995!! Once the WCW/USA vs. NJPW/Japan series concludes a Triple Threat match between Flair, Sting and Luger, with the winner facing Savage immediately after the match. With a solid undercard and mischievous main event this is definitely a must watch.

image

Halloween Havoc 1995
This one makes the list for entirely different reasons than the rest… MONSTER TRUCK SUMO MATCH!!! A decent match is tossed to the side as Johnny B Badd is able to win the WCW World Television Championship for the 2nd time. This match included an imposter Johnny B Badd!! In another throw away match between Sabu vs. Mr. JL, The Shiek ignites a fireball into the face of Mr. JL. In the ambitious main event, The Giant does battle vs. Hulk Hogan in a Sumo Monster truck match atop of Cobo Hall!! Post Sumo match Giant/Hogan battle along the rooftop until The Giant FALLS presumably to his DEATH!! As a 9 year old this was INSASNE!! Did the Giant just die? Luckily for everyone the Giant was still very much alive and would return to defeat Hulk Hogan, winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship via DQ. This snapped Hogan’s 469 day streak as WCW Champion, an all-time record.

image

Fall Brawl 1996
WCW vs. NWO in the WAR Games!! The main event is BIG time stuff as Tony Schiavone and Dusty put over the great importance of THIS night multiple times throughout the PPV. Dusty is a real asset in the booth on this night. It was well known that WCW undercards would prove to be top notch and delivered an inspiring work rate, usually out working the main eventers and this PPV was no different. Chavo Guerrero vs. DDP, Juventud Guerrera vs. Konnan and Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho are all SOLID matches that I would put up against today’s in-ring product. This also was the PPV debut of Jericho. An interesting side note, Konnan is billed at the Mexican Heavyweight Champion. He had left the AAA organization and taken the title, but no belt is present. The NWO rolled into the main event after taking out Savage in the match prior. At one point in my life this was the MOST IMPORTANT thing to have happened… We all know the story, NWO would prevail and WCW would continue to battle!! This also marked the last in-ring appearance by Flattop Sting before his PHENOMENAL Crow turn.

Monumental!!

image

NWO Souled Out 1997
Although technically a WCW PPV, this was presented by Eric Bischoff and the NWO. From the establishing shots and opening package, this PPV is completely different than any other. The PPV opens with the patented NWO black/white filter as NWO members arrive on in a convoy of garbage and transport trucks. Inside the arena, the dark and gritty theme of the PPV is quite evident. A black canvas, black, ropes, black barricade, black ring apron, black… so on and so on!! Even the entrance has been neutered, this rendition consists simply of white light boards. Keeping on the production side of things all WCW wrestlers did not receive their theme songs, AWESOME touch!! I also noticed different camera work on multiple occasions. During the Jericho/Chono match you can see the cameraman operating a boom-mic-esque camera to achieve these shots. Throughout the PPV the “Miss NWO Pageant” plays out delivering some gut-wrenchingly AWESOME AWKWARD moments. Defiantly worth a watch!! The in ring work is next to AWFUL but not completely lost as Eddy Guerrero vs. Syxx delivers a STELLAR ladder match, the PPV’s definite highspot.

Souled Out makes the list as the artistic failure.

Mayhem 1999
This was the inaugural Mayhem event which replaced the always loveable World War 3 PPV. This was also a landmark event as this was the 1st WCW PPV to be held in Canada, in my backyard of Toronto Ont, Canada. A Canadian legend was coming home with the possibility of capturing the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in CANADA!! This PPV hosts the conclusion to the ongoing 32 Man tournament, with the Final 4 consisting of Sting, Hart, Benoit and Jarrett.

And if that doesn’t do it for you, we have some CRAP!!

Norman Smiley vs. Brian Knobs in the 1st WCW Hardcore Championship match!! Smiley rocking Toronto Maple Leafs goalie equipment, AWESOME!! The gimmicks wouldn’t stop!! Buff Bagwell vs. Curt Hennig (retirement match), Vampiro vs. Berlyn (dog collar match), Goldberg vs. Sid Vicious (I quit match) and last but not least, David Flair vs. Kimberly Page. Hart would go on to defeat Benoit in the Finals sending everyone home happy!!! This is arguably is the GREATEST WCW moment for Bret, in front of almost 14,000 ravenous Canadians. The previous PPV card and following PPV card would post attendances of 8,500. Oh, CANADA!!

Starrcade ‘88: True Gritt
True Gritt is a wonderful starting point on the WWE Network at as it’s loaded with notable stars and has a perfect mix of the big-name guys from the National Wrestling Alliance and wrestlers who would go on to find greatness years later once World Championship Wrestling was up and running. Sting and Dusty Rhodes teamed up to go against the Road Warriors in a fantastic match, Rick Steiner went against Mike Rotunda and had the crowd eating out of his hand, and even Bam Bam Bigelow had a match here against Barry Windham.

To top it all off, the main event of Ric Flair vs Lex Luger might just be the finest match “The Total Package” ever took part in. Everything on this show is of a superior-quality and worth spending some time with.

Uncensored 1996
Sometimes, a little bit of perspective is needed to fully comprehend what the New World Order did for World Championship Wrestling. Uncensored took place a little over three months before the infamous Hulk Hogan turn to join Scott Hall and Kevin Nash in their reign of terror in WCW, and this show is about as hokey as you could get. A handful of matches like the opener with Konan vs Eddie Guerrero are great, but the main event with The Alliance to End Hulkamania and the Doomsday Cage is absolutely cringe-inducing!

The A.T.E.H were a collection of The Hulkster’s biggest baddies who were united to get rid of Hulk Hogan once and for all. Ric Flair! The Taskmaster! Zeus from No Holds Barred!! They were all thrown inside of a three story cage where Hogan and Randy Savage had to fight through each level from top to bottom in three separate matches in order to win. It’s as goofy and awkward as it sounds and makes it almost hard to believe that this would be the company ruling the wrestling world by the end of the year.

Starrcade ‘93: Tenth Anniversary
One of the greatest moments in the career of the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair that almost didn’t happen. The main event for Starrcade 1993 had Sid Vicious winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from Vader but due to a backstage incident where Sid attempted to murder Arn Anderson with a pair of scissors, WCW fired Vicious from the company. In Sid’s place, WCW went with Ric Flair to take on Vader in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Flair noted in his book that there was some animosity towards him from other guys backstage for getting the main event spot but he did not hesitate when it came to taking “The Mastodon” head-on. Vader pulled no punches in the match (literally) and created an intense, dramatic fight that proved that Ric Flair was still the man at age forty-four. Also, there’s a Shockmaster match near the beginning that’s worth noting as WCW turned the bumbling buffoon into a lovable idiot-savant who was clumsy outside the ring but a wrestling master once a match started.

SuperBrawl III
The first SuperBrawl I ever caught as a child and my all-time favorite WCW PPV due primarily to the main event of Vader vs Sting. I had only rented a handful of WCW VHS tapes before I got to this show, so seeing something so insane as two men getting tied together by a rope for match was completely mind-blowing to my 9-year-old self.

Other items of note about SuperBrawl III — it’s the return of Ric Flair from the WWF, it’s the WCW debut of the “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, and has a face-off between Chris Benoit and 2 Cold Scorpio that showcased a style that would become immensely popular years later in World Championship Wrestling.

Bash at the Beach 2000
I had originally intended to include the 1999 Bash PPV as it was from the time when I actually STOPPED watching WCW for a couple of months, but Bash at the Beach is a much more eventful show. This PPV is right after the Vince Russo and Eric Bischoff reboot of World Championship Wrestling and the matches themselves are a perfect mix of everything that was wrong with the company in their final years. A pre-taped match with The Demon and Vampiro battling in a dimly-light graveyard. Backstage vignettes of the Jung Dragons stalking Ernest Miller while an Asian pan-flute plays. A women’s wedding gown match where David Flair ended up losing his pants, Stacy Keilber ended up losing the match by stripping her own clothes off and everyone ends up with wedding cake smeared in their faces.

That all being said, Bash at the Beach 2000 is the final WCW show that involved Hulk Hogan as he quit the company immediately after. In his match against Jeff Jarrett for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, Jarrett ended up laying out for Hogan to give him the easy win. Afterward, Hogan grabbed the mic and vented his frustration towards Vince Russo:

"That’s why the company is in the damn shape it’s in ‘cause of bullshit like this. “
Russo responded soon after and tore into Hogan, promising the fans that they’ll “never see that piece of shit again” .

The entire thing was kinda scripted this way as the original plan had Hulk Hogan “quitting” WCW and Russo awarding the WCW title to a new champion. The angle was intended to lead to a showdown with between the two champions once The Hulkster returned, but that was all off the table once Hogan and Bischoff saw Russo’s scathing promo. Hogan felt personally attacked and quit WCW legitimately and filed a defamation suit against the promotion and Russo.

For those people who want to satiate their curiosity of what went wrong with WCW, Bash at the Beach 2000 is all you need.
