The trailers make it look like two hours of Bill Maher telling people they're wrong.
I must see this. |

I really liked it. If you're looking for something neutral, forget it. It's Bill Maher proving the idiots wrong.

This "documentary" is extremely one sided.
What Maher and Dawkins never do is interview somebody who knows what they are talking about. Why don't they go to an event where groups of Christians hand out coats to the poor and ask them about their faith? Why don't they attend food drives that help struggling families a great deal? I believe it was this weekend in a town right next to mine where over 400 families are being fed because of a joint effort by two Baptist Churches. If Maher were to show up at an event like that with his cynical attitude, he'd have a much harder time finding support. So instead, he avoids the good that's done in the name of religion and focuses solely on the bad. We have so many major issues going on in the world today and guys like this focus on things that are almost completely irrelevant. What about issues like our economy, murder, rape, hunger, poverty, and so on? Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Agnostic, whatever... the problems in this country surely don't exist because the words 'In God We Trust" are on our coins. The problems here exist because instead of focusing on other people and the REAL problems, people just want to bitterly piss and moan about their own agendas. Give me a break. Sure, there are starving people in just about ever community but we'll get to that as soon as we stop those damn religious people from knocking on our doors twice a year. Maher's an asshole. |

Pretty obvious it would be one sided. If you want a religious version of this movie see "Expelled." I know a lot of Atheists/Skeptics who were mad that Expelled hid under a fake name while interviewing big name Atheists/Agnostics. Then Maher does the same thing and a lot of the community turns a blind eye to how he got his interviews. Both Maher and Stein did their movies wrong, if you wanted them to be factual and somewhat fair (for a documentary). But I doubt that was what they were going for in either cases (especially Mahers). The movies look entertaining, but anyone who walks away from either with their mind changed are idiots. Instead if they found some interesting point in the movies, they would have to go research it themselves, as you really are only getting one side here. |

Kenny, obviously I 'm not a fan of this film, but documentaries always focus on getting THEIR point across. Being balanced isn't their concern.

I don't mind you religious folk one bit (unless you pester me about being Rastafarian which a few have) but when we all die I sure will laugh my ass off at who ever is wrong and will enjoy every minute of it because it won't pretain to me. |

Kenny has obviously not even seen the movie. What does helping the poor have to do with anything? Religious people are not the only ones who help the poor.
And religion is hardly irrelevant in the world. You should watch the movie. I would be interested in hearing what you have to say after you've actually seen it. |

Just got back from seeing this movie. Was surprised at the audience there. Was a lot of 60 plus year old couples there, and theater was pretty packed.
As for the movie, it was enjoyable. Made me laugh, but yeah anyone who uses a movie like that to form their religion opinions is an idiot. |

Judging by an earlier post, It appears Maher's point is that in a world where we have nuclear capability; religion is dangerous because of the nut jobs who believe they have to destroy a certain sect or group of people in order to please their God. In that case, the answer isn't to destroy all religion. In fact, by trying to get rid of religion you're only going to strengthen the faith of the religious. The Bible gives a strong impression that in the end Christianity will be outlawed to the point that Christians can be killed for practicing their faith. Jesus said "All nations will hate you because of me and deliver you up to their authorities." If you try to rid the world of Christianity, Christians will see this as a fulfillment of end times prophecy and it will only make them more radical than ever. As for the Muslim extremists, trying to come between them and their worship will only cause them to become more and more violent. So instead of trying to destroy religion, wouldn't it be a lot easier and more sensible to try to sort it out? In other words, get more and more good Bible teachers to explain the context of God's words to Old Testament Israel. Get somebody who knows the Koran well, and will boldly profess that Muslims who blow themselves up in the name of allah are enemies of his; not his servants. To my knowledge, the only group of religious people who are trying to destroy the world would be Muslim extremists. My understanding of the "United States of America" is that I should be allow to practice my religion freely, as should you, as long as that religion does not interfere with the rights and freedoms of our fellow countrymen. The idea of getting rid of religion is interfering with the freedoms and rights of a multitude of people who have absolutely no intention on harming anyone whatsoever. |

I live like 5 minutes away from Winter Park, FL so the theater was packed and pretty wild. There were people in the theater screaming "I know that guy!" during the Christianity Theme Park interviews and the sit-down with the guy from Winter Park. Kind of a cool experience. The movie itself was very interesting if not a bit depressing. All of these sorry ass ignorant people in the world. I do think it might have been powerful to show some good religious nuts handing out food or working at homeless shelters as a contrast to all the horrible things he showed, but Maher had an agenda and it worked for what he was going for. He lambasted the shit out of pretty much all religions in the US.
And KK is right: this is not a true documentary from a purist standpoint. |

Since this is a free country I will start doing so. Also when we all die and cross to whatever side is there after death and we all end up in a room and there is proof that there are no gods, I will hate to be the one to say "I told you so" but knowing you I doubt you'll be able to not respond to this post without saying "I have faith that jesus will find you" or something of the sort. |
