Drive 1 Not Found: Serial ATA, SATA-2
Is what is happening to my primary hard drive. It happened when I booted up this morning. Cables and everything are plugged in fine, I've even switched around drives to see if a cable was shot or something. Nope. So I had to plug in my 2nd hard drive to install Vista to search online for the answer. My second hard drive is fine (or I wouldn't be posting).
Did my HD go bye bye? I just want some of the contents off. |

I even installed Norton Ghost a few months ago to make weekly back ups. Good thing I never got around to setting that up.

I recently experienced a similar problem with one of my external hard drives.
I downloaded a program called "Disc Rescue" (free). It enables you to recover drives/files that Windows can't access (for whatever reason). Start Disc Rescue and get it to search for "Physical" drives. When it finds your "lost" drive, select that drive and get it to search for "Logical" drives. It will then provide you with a list of all the recoverable files on that drive. Select the files you want to retrieve and save them to another hard drive. When you have finished, you should then be able to reformat the "lost" drive (remember you will then lose everything on that drive) and start from scratch. |

D'oh. I'm at work at the moment so not on my home PC.
I could be wrong with the name - Try searching for a program called "File Rescue" - if you still have no luck I'll check when I get home. |

File Rescue was it. It found lots of files, except the free version doesn't let me recover them. So I am downloading the pro version in a torrent.
----edit: turned out it was a XD card, not the hard drive. Last edited by G; 02-12-2008 at 09:37 PM. |

Well I tried 4 different apps, and none even recognized the hard drive. I thought one did, but it was a drive of 250mb, not 250 gb, which is what the bad one is. So it looks like it's gone forever. Oh well.
Within the last 2 hours or so I must have downloaded and installed 100 programs, and I have a headache from it. I now feel like my computer is clustered and messy again cause I was in a bit of a rush with trying to get those recovery apps to work. So, when my new secondary hard drive gets here (750gb), I am going to transfer some files to it, and wipe this one clean. Then I will install Vista and the programs again, while taking my time with it and organizing as I go. |

WTF
Out of nowhere it pops up in the system tray that the dead drive installed successfully. I open up Computer, and it's there! But, at the same time I was uninstalling a program and it restarted the computer. Now it's gone. There was that clicking coming from the tower, it was 1 click every 5 seconds or so. I moved the tower around trying to get it to go away, and it did. That's when the drive appeared out of nowhere. So, I'm thinking that clicking was coming from the drive and it's telling me good bye. |

Yeah, now the system will not even boot with it plugged in/sata:2 turned on. Keeps saying Drive 2 not recognized or some shit even though I'm trying to boot off of drive 0. I'd imagine SATA is just like PS2 where you plug something in, then you need to reboot for it to be recognized, unlike USB. When I plugged it in while I was in Windows, it just hanged for awhile until I did a hard reset. So basically I can't even try to recover anything since I can't have it on.

Are there some tiny tabs at the back of your external hard drive - might be marked "S", "M" or "L"?
If so, select "M" for "Master" and your PC will use this drive to boot up - if you have Windows installed on it. Then you can try and set your internal drive to "S" for "Slave" and use the File Recovery program to recover your lost files. When all is done, you could then reformat the lost drive and reverse the Master/Slave settings and start anew. |

He's using SATA though, which doesn't have to be set to Master or slave, if I recall correctly.
But that clicking is almost never a good sign and means you should be saying goodbye |

Ok, dude, try something, I had a similar problem, and this worked, take the red (usually) cable thats plugged from your hard drive to your motherboard and switch them around (with power off) and then try again, turns out the hard drive was spinning, and vibrating causing the connector to shake loose, which made it crash sometimes, anyways give that a try

What, so you're suggesting to just switch the SATA cables? Ok, I'll try. |

Well on the bright side, the SATA cable plugged into the bad drive broke when I pulled it out. So I got to buy a perty green one that looks to be strong. Should arrive same day as my new hard drive. Switched the bad drive into the SATA 0 port using the working cable and nothing comes up. Just a blank screen with _ flashing. PLugged working hard drive back into that port and it booted up fine. So that eliminates that port/cable being an issue.

Yeah so I plugged in the new SATA cable I got into the old drive, and during the boot up it repaired or fixed the hard drive.
So now it seems to be working like normal. I'm copying over the files I want to keep to my new drive, and gonna end up ditching the "was bad" drive just to be safe. Odd. I have no idea what cause this problem to begin with, because the tower doesn't move, but now appears the bad drive needed to be shifted around a bit and a new cable in place. |
