On newer systems...

I'm wondering how long it takes to perform Defrags and error checks and all that crap. I'm just wondering, because my current hard drive of 80 GB takes forever, and since I know there are MUCH bigger HDs out there...

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

I dunno, I only have a 30 gb drive, and using the default Windows defragger it takes about 3-4 hours to do one

Defrags take more time depending on how bad they are clustered. If you had 1 Gig of memory and a 3Ghz processer and your HDD is still really cluttered it can take hours. Mine usually takes about 30 minutes at the most but I keep my computer pretty clean and defrag about weekly. It can really speed up performance on hard drives.

Last time I did mine, it took a couple of hours. And I have an 80 Gig HD. I also defragged my 40 Gig External HD.

I use Iolo System Mechanic for that, though. Pretty hott program.

Anyone know a good free one?

Eventually, I wouldn't mind buying a defrag program, but money's gonna be tight for a couple of months (court costs I haven't brought up on TPWW of late...).

The one that comes with Windows. It's probably the best cheap one unless you want to go to download.com and look for some by the ratings.

I think using the one that comes with windows is the best, if you're using windows 2000/XP.
If you're not, download FixIT utilities from somewhere and it has a brilliant built in defragger

Using the default windows one on XP, mine finishes in less than an hour with a 120 gig HD. Hadn't done it in 3 or 4 months either.

Ninti Ishkur does not have that much rep yet (10+)
That's a good little program right there.

I'll probably even buy it.
