20 Most Overrated Movies of All Time

Premiere Magazine has posted their 20 most overrated movies of all-time. 2001: A Space Odyssey, American Beauty, and Clerks? Surely you jest, crappy movie magazine.

I could see Clerks being on the list, though I love it and it's one of my favorite movies of all time.

What the fuck though? 2001: A Space Odyssey? Easy Rider? American Beauty?

I can see making a case for a lot of them but some of them definitely should not be on the list.

2001 I can see a case for being on the list. One can see how easy it is to get fed up with 15 minute light sequences and external shots of spaceships.

American Beauty I concur was overrated. It started off great but quickly descended.

As for the rest of the movies on that list... The only other ones I've actually seen all of is Wizard of Oz and A Beautiful Mind.

Worth noting that this list wasn't like, voted on or anything. It's just a bunch of the writers for Premiere mentioning one film that they personally think is overrated.

My guess is whomever came up with that list is some douchebag director trying to impress other douchebag hollywood people. Seemed like he picked a bunch of random famous movies in a lot of ways.

As for Clerks, I can see a valid argument that it is overrated. The acting/directing isn't the best in the world, but Clerks is a very influential film.

So what are some films you all think are overrated?
Personally for me when I saw this thread I thought of Boondock Saints and Donnie Darko. I enjoyed Donnie Darko, and Boondocks was alright. But yeah, I'm a college student and those are two movies people jizz over all the time. They think those movies are perfect and the best movie ever simply cause they haven't seen a lot of good movies because they are to busy quoting family guy/will ferrell comedies 24/7.

Apparently the link isn't working anymore. Didn't get to read it, so I don't know what other movies those morons put on their list.

If I had to pick a couple, it'd be:

Scarface- I never saw what the appeal of this movie was. Okay, so the guy's rich, snorts a lot of coke, and treats everyone like shit until he finally gets killed. I've never been that big on the "being a criminal asshole is great" movies, but at least flicks like Goodfellas and The Godfather are well-made. All Scarface has is annoying synthesizer music, a cheesy Ricky Ricardo accent, and a misleading title that makes it sound like it's about Capone.

Aliens- As a scifi/horror movie fan, I always loved the original ALIEN; it was creepy as hell and had one of the coolest-looking monsters ever. The sequel, however, never impressed me. All of the suspense and build of the first is replaced with big loud explosions, the Aliens themselves quit being scary after you've seen the first eighty get blown to pieces, and the dialogue alternates between deadpan exposition and one-liners that sound more at home in a Bruce Campbell movie. Not to mention the only actor in the whole movie that seems like he gives a damn about what they're saying is Bill Paxton, who plays it up like a cartoon character, while everyone else has all the charisma of a bowl of oatmeal. Certainly more quotable than the first one, but I still don't see why it became the more popular.

Pirates of the Carribean 1 and 2: I know I'm going to get in trouble for this one. Sure, the stunts are cool, and the special effects aren't half-bad (though Davy Jones and his fish-people in the second looked incredibly goofy to me), but after that, there's not much to it. Johnny Depp just stumbles around doing a Keith Richards impression for two hours, and gets an Oscar nomination? Still, at least he's not Orlando Bloom, who hasn't changed his one facial expression in the last five years. Add to it an over-reliance on Deus ex machina (what with the ocean being so big and all, it's awfully lucky that everyone keeps running into each other so often) and some inconsistencies of character (why on Earth did Will and Elizabeth suddenly care about Jack's apparent death at the end of 2, after he'd continually tried to screw Will over and just plain screw Elizabeth?) and you've got a big flashy movie that I just can't give two shits about. Pure popcorn, yet everyone I know treats it like the greatest thing since tits.

Brokeback Mountain- Yes, I know, I'm a horrible person for saying something bad about one of the only mainstream hit movies that focuses on gay relationships. And it's not that I have a problem with the subject matter. I have a problem with the fact that it's boring as hell and the dialogue is corny ("I wish I knew how to quit you?" ....oy) If you want to watch a really good drama about the struggles of a gay man in mainstream society, rent Philadelphia instead.

I've always thought appeal of Scarface was "living the American Dream." Coming to America with nothing and becoming something big. A lot of people can relate to that. Especially immigrants. And apparently rappers. Don't know how that fits in...

Clerks is not just a stoner comedy, it is a commentary on lazy and unmotivated cynics who are intellegent enough to succeed in the "real world" but are either afraid of or reject the conventional 9-5 lifestyle, and have trouble letting go of their adolesence.

Nowhere Man I see where you're coming from with Scarface. I think it's a good movie but the cheesy music has ruined it. I'm sure it was the hip thing in the 80's but it's a movie that doesn't stand the test of time because of the soundtrack. Block the soundtrack out and you have yourself a hell of a movie.

No, you don't. Because taking out the shitty 80s music means it's still 3 hours long and no one acts worth a shit besides Pacino.

These Are My Picks from movies i have seen.

A Clockwork Orange - just too wierd. terrible synthesizer music. i think more people pretend to like it, than truely like the movie.

American Beauty - not a bad movie, but definitely overrated

The Godfather - i just dont see what is so damned great about this movie.

Scarface - a modern, well made remake might be a good thing, but hollywood would fuck it up by making it a Colin Ferrel vehicle or some shit.

Armagedon - stupid movie. Deep Impact was much better on every level.

The Sixth Sense - boring the first and second time i saw it. not scary. and not a particularly mind-blowing twist ending.

The Ring - did not see what was so damn scary about that movie.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High - I dont know why this piece of shit is considered to be such a classic.

Dazed and Confused - Not very funny or realistic. The Stoned Age is a similar, yet much better and funnier movie.

Chicago - Jesus Christ in Heaven, what were they thinking.

Crash - Jesus Christ in Heaven, what were they thinking.

Superman Returns - i just rented that the other day. i tapped out after 40 minutes. i think i will have to make a whole new thread about why that movie (and Superman in general) sucks.

thats just a few. there will probably be more to follow.

People have to remember that a movie can be great and still be overrated. A movie, no matter how great it is, can still be overrated.

I have problems with much of that list but A Clockwork Orange is basically the best movie ever.

I can see what you're saying with people "pretending" to like it though. I'm not sure how many people actually "get it."

I hated Lord of the Rings, so I'm gonna go on that.

It's so boring and long. The second one is the only one that was entertaining.

I really like V For Vendetta. Lots of allusions to 1984, Brave New World, the Russian Revolution and the philisophical works of Soren Kierkegaard.

John Hurt's performance in 1984 > John Hurt's performane in Vendetta

Also...just in general...

I think the point of an overrated list is that someones inveitably gonna disagree with them. Thats the point of it being overrated, everyone thinks its great and they're saying its not. So even if they suck and they don't know what they're talking about I would guess saying they're wrong in a way makes them right, in their own stupid minds.
Personally though (despite what i said), I think they're insane and to say some of those are overrated is a bold claim.
Overrated is more like...Napolean Dynamite. Or perhaps even Donnie Darko (which I really like but some people make it out to be God's gift to film)

Yeah def. Donnie Darko (while quite good) isn't half as good as it's made out to be. And Napolean Dynamite just plain sucked.

Once again though there is no reaosn why Gone With the Wind should be on that list. I'ts like he just got a list of classic movies and picked some just so he could credible when he got to the ones he just didn't like.

(Also Jerry I spaced your post, it looks much better in my quote.)

Yea definitely. They're great movies dont get me wrong. But since they missed their audience initially and gained it on video they have a cult like following. And everyone who stumbles across it thinks they're so cool and original for liking it and make it out to be this generations Citizen kane or something.

Great movies. Highly overrated.

I dont think people should take 'overrated' as an insult. An 'overrated' movie can still be better than an 'underrated' movie. Its just all about how its rated.
