Well we all know who the hero is. He's shadowed out because U Can't C Him!

RTWM info from IGN. Putting it in spoilers because it does spoil some major plot points of the storyline.

SPOILER: show
Once again with WWE '12, THQ is starting from scratch. The publisher's mission, alongside developer Yukes, has been to recreate its core wrestling franchise, eliminating what has grown stale and tired after years and years of incremental upgrades and adjustments. To say this game marks a major milestone in THQ's approach to WWE games is an understatement. It's launching a new brand. It's completely overhauled its core gameplay. Now it's rethinking how it provides a core single player experience. The Road to Wrestlemania idea that you've known from years past is dead. Say hello to a new era.

THQ is making a bold decision right out of the gate - you'll play as three different characters throughout this new Road to Wrestlemania storyline, and two of them are pre-determined. Considering previous years allowed you to select from a variety of different and popular superstars, I wouldn't blame you for being surprised or frustrated. However narrowing the game's focus has actually afforded the developer a great deal of new opportunities.

Previous storylines for WWE games were limited to about three months of in-game time. You'd start around the Royal Rumble, a January Pay Per View, and end with that year's Wrestlemania at the end of March. Now the story mode represents about 18 months of gameplay that, while encompassing two Wrestlemanias, isn't actually focused on WWE's seminal annual event. It's focused on building characters, feuds and storylines that quite honestly sound a great deal better than most anything the WWE does on a weekly basis.

The story mode is split into three acts, each focusing on a different superstar who occupies a different "role" within the company. For example the first act features Sheamus, who occupies the role of a villain. Playing as the so-called Celtic Warrior, you'll crush the good guys and generally wreck havoc on the WWE until you reach the second arc focusing on a "hero" superstar, Triple H. What's most remarkable about these arcs is how THQ transitions between the two. Your run with Sheamus will literally be interrupted as Triple H ambushes him, getting revenge after an injury at the hands of the bad guy months earlier. Playing through the second arc will lead you to the most customizable portion of the single-player storyline - the third and final act allows you to select or create a custom superstar, who will run through an "outsider" storyline.

Meet the United Kingdom!

Road to Wrestlemania is more than just a series of matches. If all you want is to simulate weekly battles between superstars, you're far better off selecting the WWE Universe mode, which will also return this year in a very familiar form. The focus of Road is telling a story. The game's designers realized that simply being focused to win match after match after match could get stale, so they've thrown a number of variables into the mix. Some bouts are more objective-based, pushing players to adapt to different circumstances to continue the storyline. Other sequences focus on timed button presses to add some interactivity to scripted sequences. Different concepts are mixed into the fold depending on what needs to be accomplished. The end goal here is to add some variety to the 10-12 hour experience.

Controlling which wrestlers appear in the storyline has the huge advantage of allowing THQ to meticulously lay out a complex narrative. It also allows them to do extensive voice acting. Though not all of the superstars were about to provide voiceovers, many have. You might be wondering how that applies to the created wrestler in the third act. In a very clever move, THQ hired current TNA star Austin Aries to provide dialogue for your character, who will also go by the name Jacob Cass during the storyline. It's yet another bold move in a series of bold moves, but it could pay off in a big way if handled right. The ability to design your own character while still retaining all of the key traits a full-time, real superstar would have? Not bad.

Edge is up to his usual cowardly tricks.

During my demo, THQ filled me in on a variety of other details that grabbed my attention. Backstage sequences are being retooled to be more straightforward and less about aimless wandering. The storyline will not only touch upon original concepts, like Sheamus creating a stable with Wade Barrett and William Regal called the United Kingdom, but older ideas like the reformation of WCW. The publisher is working closely with WWE for small details as well. That U.K. stable? It has its own theme song and entrance video.

To be honest with you, I don't know if THQ has found all the right answers with Road to Wrestlemania. I won't know until I've played through the entire storyline. The notion of being committed to a dozen hours as Sheamus, Triple H and my custom character makes me a bit nervous. Neither superstar is someone I'd immediately select to play through a lengthy storyline like this. But I like THQ's vision here. I like the fact they're willing to risk everything for the sake of finding a fresh direction. So far that type of change has paid off - WWE '12 has a core gameplay that is downright addicting. Will the same prove true for its single-player mode? We'll find out on November 22.

If you don't want to be spoiled, know that it's one storyline where you play as three different wrestlers and is the equivalent of 18 months of shows/storylines.

Sounds interesting...but I could easily rent the game and play through that quickly. It's still all about Universe for me.

Which, apparently, now won't be revealed until tomorrow.

Yeah, like I said, I barely touched RTWM last year outside of the Christian one. Honestly the fact that it sounds so epic, is one continuous storyline and has less mindless wandering will make me want to actually play it. But it's all about Universe.

Yeah, I'm very excited about this. I like the idea of one all-encompassing story instead of a bunch of little ones. It always felt tedious playing through two or three RTWMs of guys I didn't care about once I was done with the ones I wanted to play.

Though I'm not sure it really truly is one giant story, as much as one giant mode divided in to three stories.

We'll have to wait and see how connected everything is.

Still sounds nifty.

IGN's official preview isn't up yet, but details on Universe 2.0 are seeping out on other sites. Injuries are in. Attributes can change based on a Superstar's momentum. You can totally customize belts and shows. Wanna move Raw to Friday? Go ahead. Replace Smackdown with Thunder? You got it.

I was lukewarm positive to the previews of 2011 and scathing to the previews and games before that, but I'm genuinely excited for this one. Like ridiculously so.

I wonder if there will be "ratings" for the shows. If so, I am so doing RAW and Nitro.

Sounds like they've added everything I wanted in Universe, and even included changing stats which I never even considered. Universe is going to be a fucking blast.

If the game does have as many swerves and run-ins in Universe as last year, I'll just download me a TNA roster and play TNA '12.

SPOILER: show
"Titles can be defended on any show.

Storylines make sense now and blend together better.

DRAFT!!!!! And it looks just like it does on TV, with the wrestler faces flipping through until one is picked. Even has the same music.

Everything just feels tighter, no more inferno matches for 8 straight PPV's.

Tag teams/stables stay together, some may still split up, but not anything like it was last year.

EVERYTHING can be edited. We'll get to that here in a few

I love Universe mode personally, feel in complete control of 3 shows.... (yes 3).

Superstars...

BUT

I did say everything is editable. So, you can make that show, whatever you want. Name it whatever you want (Same with Raw/Smackdown).

For instance, I made Nitro on Monday, complete with logo, arena, belts. Then made TNA Impact on Thursday (didn't have logo or arena, but those will obviously be created by the community probably in a matter of days after reelase). Then I put Raw on Friday night. You can then remove entire shows from the draft and for titles. So only wrestlers on TNA can complete for whatever titles you set for that show, no cross over unless you let it. When you set up the show, you name it, set the belts for it, etc.

Or you can have all 3 shows open and compete on other shows here and there.

Unfortunately the title rankings still isn't editable, so you can't just put Cody Rhodes as the #1 contender for every belt But you can give him a title shot whenever you want and for whatever show you want.

So as you can see, the ideas here are pretty much endless. Want an all ECW show? Sure! Want an all Legends show? Sure! Want Raw/Smackdown/Superstars as it is now, SURE!. Want John Cena and Randy Orton to be stuck together on GLOW on Friday nights? Go ahead.

Yes, it's that cool!

you can turn on/turn off anyone you want to be involved in the mode. So if you download 50 CAW's and only want to use them in your universe, go ahead.

You can edit titles for what they are set for. So if you want the WCW belt to be the TNA title, you can do that. Can't edit the actual title. Sorry.

There can be 3 World Titles, one for each show. There are 23 belts in the game to choose from and use.

I don't know all 23 belts in the game, only a few that were shown to me.

They are unlockable, but if you buy Fan Axxess, they are all unlocked from the start like last year.

Feuds: The same as last year in a way, just more natural than it was. Didn't feel as disjointed to me.

Rankings: I still saw some goofyness, not as bad as last year, but there was some. It's an easier fix now allowing title defenses on any show.

One big thing that I and others expressed we wanted back was a title history. So hoping that is in next year.

I didn't really experiment with heels vs heels to see what would happen. I know I kept a faction together for 5 months without anyone turning, until one guy did, and he was immediately a face and feuded with the faction leader. So at least it all made sense.

Commentary still sucks...it is what it is. Besides Cole being a heel, talking about Cole Miners, and praising all things Miz, it's not very good. LOL

Matches were 5 a show, up 1 from last year. Superstars only had 3/4 I believe. So whatever show you make on Thursday will have less matches.

Did not see new cutscenes that I noticed, but they were better placed than a guy sitting front row randomly every show.

Still in wrestling gear, reason is that the character models are caked on, so can't just add clothing options. That's why the Nexus armband last year couldn't be moved or adjusted for Wade Barrett and others. It was actually a part of him.

1. If I take the World Title off Smackdown, what happens on their show? Do I have to replace it with something? You can replace Smackdown's title with whatever belt you want.

2. If I assign them one of the other belts, say the WCW championship, will they have rankings for that belt or are rankings still only for WWE, World, US, Intercontinental and Tag belts? Ranking are set for each show's titles.

3. Can you split the tag belts like they used to be and have two separate sets of rankings? Did not mess with tag belts, sorry

4. Is there still just one announce team? Yes, just Cole/Lawler

5. I saw one of the achievements has something to do with getting 75% momentum in Universe with a caw... how does that work... is this like the popularity thing in GM mode? God I hope not. I'll let the IGN review explain that better, I didn't mess with actually doing too many matches myself in Universe, did mostly simming through it and played out things like the Rumble, MitB, and the Draft night (winner gets the draft pick).

6. Can you still give a caw any ratings you wish... we don't have to build them up through pointless grinding do we? Yes

7. Do you still see like the World champion competing for the US belt? Possible, but not as bad. The ratings are still not perfect.

Pretty sure PPV's had 6 or 7 matches, can't remember, it's more than a regular show.

Cannot move the date unfortuantely, Always a Monday, Thursday, Friday show.

There's a global setting, so if you change Monday to Nitro, it'll always stay that way until you change it back.

Can't edit PPV's.

Draft occurs after Mania.

I'll try to clarify this.. So Raw has the WWE Title and USA Title. ROH (Thursday show) has Random belt and Random Belt. Smackdown has World title and IC Title. Each show will have their own rankings for their own titles. Then you can lock down each show so only the participants on that show can compete for those titles.

Draft: All the matches occur on Raw. And no, it's completely random. You can obviously move them back. I didn't try if I cut Smackdown off from the draft what would happen, but my Thursday show was cut off and none of their wrestlers were involved. So each match was a Raw (nitro) guy vs. Smackdown (raw) guy. Winner got the draft pick for their show.

All 3 shows still on one PPV?: Unfortunately, it is. Since out of the box it recognizes that it's WWE. But you have the editing power to make it 3 different brands that don't intersect except for PPV's. You can obviously change all the matches though. It's a limitation I know they are looking to change, but not sure if it'll be ever given the green light by WWE. They don't have multiple PPV's a month so why would their game to accommodate other fed's. So the dev's basically found a way around the limitation. It works well.

Arenas: Every PPV, Raw, Smackdown, Superstars, NXT, Nitro, Clash of the Champions and Starrcade.

Editing matches on PPVs: Yes, you can edit each match. If you want Raw only PPV January, then a Smackdown one in February, and then a ROH one in March, you can do that. Just have to edit before the show.

Special Shows: Draft is the only special show. There is a Tribute to the Troops though.

For me, I loved Universe mode last year, kept me playing the game, but at the same time, I HATED how limited it was. I expressed this when I met with the devs of WWE '12.

Most, not all mind you, of my issues have been fixed and this will eat up TONS of time.

I still wish I could book matches better and keep better track of feuds. Still needs to steal or buy a text sim to really get Universe to where it needs to be. And still needs to get it online!

We tried to get that across as much as possible.

But in the mean time, Universe 2.0 will make many "sim" guru's for wrestling very happy."

Sounds amazing. Fairly bummed that we still can't edit rankings and have to have the number one contender in the title match - but being able to throw in title matches wherever will be fun. It also isn't mentioned in there if we can edit who is in MITB (you could edit it last year but the stipulation wouldn't count), or if there are two MITBs.

Otherwise this is sounding fucking fantastic. Going to actually solidify the brand split. And I'll probably turn Superstars into NXT and use random CAWs on there with the occasional appearance by Raw or SD guys.

Don't know if this was covered or not:

If you put two people in a match in Universe mode, let's say Rhodes and Sheamus, and you SIMULATE IT, can you decide who wins WITHOUT playing it?

Are we allowed to hit females in the game? I was sad last year cause I could not powerbomb Kelly Kelly as Sheamus.

They should also have a random injury system, where theres announcement that someone will be out for awhile, or just random events that take wrestlers off the roster for a set time and then you have to plan around them if it happened to be a main star.

The random system in EWR and TEW was hilarious and shitty at the same time. I'd have stuff written up to cover a couple weeks worth of shows, only to have one of the main ones in that planning get hurt or suspended. Pissed me off sometimes.

lol @ Nash doing you can't see me, Rey being thrown through the announce table from the ring and Miz as King of Kings.

Wish I hadn't watched it though. Sheamus unifying a bunch of titles would have been a slight mark-out moment.

Jesus Christ, I want to play story mode NOW!

It's a shame that the commentary does suck in that video (feels too stiff), but I don't care. It looks like the greatest story arc since Vince/Austin, but it's not real.

RTWM spoilers
SPOILER: show
WWE SmackDown vs Raw is no more, and in its place is the new and easy to remember title WWE '12. After years of dominating the world of wrestling games, THQ is out to make a fresh start, though the publisher and the Yuke's development team aren't forgetting what made SmackDown so huge. Not too long ago we saw the gameplay tweaks and creation suite updates, and now we've seen the single player offerings. Fan favorite modes Road to WrestleMania and WWE Universe are back, but just how much have they changed for this new era?

Ever since Road to WrestleMania was introduced in SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, we've been big fans of the dedicated campaign mode and its stories worthy of appearing on actual episodes of Raw. Over the years RtWM has focused on stars as diverse as CM Punk, Shawn Michaels, even the Divas, but the biggest shake up this year is how complete a story it is. There are three separate campaigns with one leading directly to the other, the overall story spanning a much longer period of time than the mere months between Royal Rumble and WrestleMania.

The mode begins with John Cena getting ready for a match against The Undertaker as you walk with the unbeatable hero to the ring. Then out of nowhere Cena is jumped by Sheamus and you realize Cena isn't the star of this mode, it's the Great White Irishman of the WWE that‘s taking the spotlight. It was a pleasant surprise to see the devs taking a break from Cena and giving a shot to the greatest Ginger in WWE history.

As his story continues, the plot plays up to Sheamus' background, as he forms a stable with other stars from across the pond. Sheamus builds a team with William Regal, Drew McIntyre and Wade Barret to form a United Kingdom of villains. Soon they’re dominating the entire WWE, snatching all the titles from the promotion. At the demo event for this preview, we met with Sheamus in person and he mentioned that the plot is similar to one he and the Brits tried to start up in the real promotion but it never got going, so it’s nice to see the story find a place in WWE ‘12.

Eventually group turmoil disrupts the stable as Wade Barret challenges Sheamus for dominance and they ultimately square off in a match for all the gold. That’s when we found out how the second of the three Road to WrestleMania modes starts, as Sheamus’ Villain campaign leads immediately into the Outsider campaign featuring Triple H.

Hunter’s plot revolves around him making one more play for the championship, trying to top Ric Flair’s record for most world title victories. HHH is out to dominate like never before, but he also has no friends backing him up this time, which leads the story to some strange places. At one point he battles Rated-R Superstar Edge, which shows how WWE games can sometimes beat the real thing, as Edge retired very suddenly and permanently due to health issues earlier this year, something fans can (temporarily) ignore in WWE ‘12.

Once Triple H’s tale is over the focus moves pretty suddenly into the final third of Road to WrestleMania, the hero campaign. Though we wondered just who the hero would be (Daniel Bryan? Cover star Randy Orton?), THQ instead is giving us the first ever full Road to WrestleMania storyline that stars a created wrestler. You make the character at the start of the mode, and in the cutscenes he goes by the nickname Cass (shorthand for Create-A-Superstar mode), as you follow his trip to the top.

Your created wrestler begins his career on Raw as the winner of WWE’s up-and-coming talent competition NXT and immediately gets into a feud with fellow NXT star Husky Harris. Later on it involves the addition of Kevin Nash, as Big Sexy has become the General Manager of Raw in the storyline. Despite the main character of this section being “made up,” the final third of Road to WrestleMania still emphasizes the mode’s more cinematic qualities.

Overall Road to WrestleMania didn’t look all that reinvented, but instead further refined. We aren’t complaining, as the mode has been a continual favorite of ours since its creation years ago. The devs promise 10 to 12 hours of gameplay in that RtWM alone, which would be a pretty good chunk of time by itself in most games, but WWE titles are nothing if not over brimming with content.

Another example of the huge amount of game that WWE ’12 boasts is the improved WWE Universe mode, aka career mode, as you can play through years worth of simulated WWE events. Universe 2.0 as they call it aims to be more open than years past, with more options and variables than ever before.

First off you aren’t limited to WWE show schedules, as you can create your own shows to perform on. You can switch between what wrestlers you play as at any time along with a superstar‘s friends and rivals, and a wrestlers win/loss record matters more than ever for their progress to challenging a title holder. Also the devs wanted a more focused experience with less random stuff popping up in storylines, hopefully meaning it’ll make more sense as you’re playing it. But that doesn’t mean unpredictable moments don’t happen, as Brock Lesnar made his shocking in-game return to WWE in the Universe mode that was being demoed to us.

Altogether the single player offering in WWE ‘12 look more substantial than ever, which is great news for those who aren’t as into the title’s wide array of online and offline multiplayer. We still aren’t completely convinced this is the full-on reboot that the name change signifies to some, but we like what we’re seeing in the improvements to classic modes. The game hits stores November 22, so keep an eye out for any new info we get on the title between now and the review. Long-time wrestling fans especially will be pleasantly surprised to see what THQ has in store for the title.
