Better Face Or Heel (Part 2)?

For this week's podcast, we're doing a follow-up on a previous show and taking a look at six wrestlers, discussing whether or not they were better in their role as a babyface or a heel over the course of their career, considering their work in the ring, as well as analysing their characters/personalities/runs, and would love to get your thoughts and feedback on the following individuals and whether you prefer them as faces or heels, and most importantly, why:

1. Jerry Lawler

2. Hulk Hogan

3. Sgt. Slaughter

4. Steve Austin

5. Brock Lesnar

6. Eddie Guerrero

As always the best contributions will be read on the podcast and you'll be credited accordingly. So what do you think?

EDIT - The show discussing whether these guys were Better Faces or Heels and taking your feedback, is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean....elPartDeux.mp3

1. Jerry Lawler
Jerry Lawler as a commentator is obviously way better as a heel, it's probably not even worth talking about. It's much more entertaining listening to a smarmy Lawler riffing (although probably still equally not caring about the product) on all of the wrestlers. His insults are legendary particularly when he would go after Helen and Stu, and although with a propensity to be grading with his hammed up obnoxiousness and love for puppies, it just seemed like he was having more fun, seemingly doing what he wanted. Now, he's just a schill. Which is fine, he's doing his job and he's doing what he's expected to do. Hat's off to him.

As a wrestler, it's hard to say. He's a really great little chickenshit heel, very funny to watch. In regards to Lawler as a babyface, with the little Memphis I've been exposed to, he is really great. And the one WWE angle he received some shine as a babyface against the Miz, I thought he was actually tremendous. He really understood the psychology of the crowd. They were into every punch and kick, never mind his jumping fist. Just a really good face worker with tons of fire. So I'd say as a wrestler, I'll sit cowardly on the fence.

2. Hulk Hogan- As good as his NWO run was (marred by it's ambling on into the ether of a terrible face turn and clusterfuck finish of the nWo) he is best as the Ruler of Hulkamania. I'm talking almost everything before 1991. Realistically, barring some memorable moments, nothing he did ever came close to that 1984-1991 run. It had a lot to do with the steroid stuff and outside distractions getting to him. I think he lost sight of what made him truly an awesome force in wrestling and kind of lost his untouchable awesome aura. And as bad as this sounds, him losing all that muscle mass made him seem less larger than life. It seems like it would mean not too much, but when a body guy who looks like a super hero ceases to resemble a super hero, it certainly takes away a certain something. It kills the suspension of disbelief, just look at him in 1988 compared to 1993. It's not even the same guy. Time and lack of vitamins can be a cruel mistress.

3. Sgt. Slaughter- MEH

4. Steve Austin- Probably a better performer as a heel, but a better draw as a face. I think it could be argued some of his best work in the ring was done when he was a heel, but his most memorable moments were as a face... with the tendencies of a heel. In all fairness, he still worked as a babyface, just one very mean barnstorming babyface. But you could say his style was a lot like the Undertaker in that sense, because their aura went beyond kissing babies and being a "good guy", same goes for the rock.

5. Brock Lesnar- He's a babyface right now, but for all intents and purposes a monster heel, where he is undoubtedly at home. In his initial run, his work as a babyface was often awkward. As a monster badass heel, he has that terrifying Big Boss appeal most wrestlers dream of.

6. Eddie Guerrero- Babyface, but great at both. As a face he was just so easy to get behind. He wrestled his matches with raw emotion and fire and it seemed to come so natural to him. He was an incredibly believable babyface, and his work reminds me a lot of Ricky Steamboat... at least the feeling he gives you in his matches. You couple the aforementioned fire with top rate selling and athleticism, you have an ultimate babyface.

1. Jerry Lawler
Lawler was great at both sides. Although I will say he was just over like a million bucks in Memphis as a top babyface.

2. Hulk Hogan
I liked the NWO stuff. His heel work though before that was laughable. Clearly a far better babyface.

3. Sgt. Slaughter
Just a awesome heel. I love watching his tag team with Don Kernodle. Their feud with Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood in the Mid Atlantic area was amazing stuff.

4. Steve Austin
Austin was another one who was great at both sides. His WWE stuff was clearly a face with heel tendencies at times. He was not your average babyface that fans were used to.

5. Brock Lesnar
Clearly a far better and natural heel at times.

6. Eddie Guerrero
Eddie was great at both sides. However I will say he's a better heel.

His stuff with Art Barr alone was just amazing. Those two were freaking heat magnets in Mexico. One of the most hated tag teams in Lucha Libre history.

Also his heel work in WCW was fun to watch too.

1. Jerry Lawler- Heel

2. Hulk Hogan- As much as I love Hollywood Hogan, he is the greatest babyface of all time, perhaps.

3. Sgt. Slaughter- Babyface.

4. Steve Austin- Give me '96 - early '97 heel Austin any day.

5. Brock Lesnar- His initial heel run was great.

6. Eddie Guerrero- Slimy, cheating heel Eddie.

1. Jerry Lawler

- Definetely face, he is a classic.

2. Hulk Hogan

- Face. NWO was greate because of the shocking angle but Hogan was still a better face.

3. Sgt. Slaughter

- Heel. There was a danger someone was gonna shoot him just because he was such a good heel.
Nuff said.

4. Steve Austin

- Face. He single handedly gave WWE domination of the business over WCW just by being such an amazing face.

5. Brock Lesnar

- Heel. He is a natural monster, even if UFC he was a "heel".

6. Eddie Guerrero

- Heel.

1. Jerry Lawler
Nothing beats spiteful, vindictive, Hart-hating, midget-exploiting Lawler. Definitely heel.

2. Hulk Hogan
Look I just want to say I'm with you guys on the notion that Hogan's initial run was more heel than anything. From denying Andre a title shot to cheating in the 88 Rumble to throwing out his buddies in subsequent years to screwing Sid in 92, lusting after Elizabeth under Savage'a nose, throwing human ashes into the Undertaker's face at a Tuesday in Texas (as soon as On-the-take Tunney wasn't looking of course,) to stealing a title shot at Wrestlemania 9, the man was a heel throughout all of that.
I don't know how that answers the question but yeah.

3. Sgt. Slaughter
Option 3 - he was best in the GI Joe cartoon.

4. Steve Austin
Face. Why is this being asked?

5. Brock Lesnar
Heel. The man needs to be a killer animal.

6. Eddie Guerrero
Face. Heel Eddie was just too hard to hate.

Really tough round this time.

1. Jerry Lawler
Great at both. Regarded by many of his peers to be one of the best workers and successes in wrestling as either a babyface or a heel. He and Bill Dundee would trade face/heel dispositions to keep things generating money in Memphis, but I think overall I give the nod to King being a better babyface, just because most of his classics involved him as the hero of Memphis wrestling.

2. Hulk Hogan
That back-scratching, woman-stealing, Sid-arm-grabbing Hogan was always a heel. Just because a guy is popular doesn't mean he's a true babyface.

3. Sgt. Slaughter
I can't really comment on this one. He was pretty over as both, but I never really watched at the time, so I can't attest to his overall performance.

4. Steve Austin
Face. Austin turning heel jumped the shark in WWE he was such an effective babyface. Maybe he was more of a morally ambiguous persona, but his popularity alone gets him the face nod. And no, this doesn't contradict my Hogan answer.

5. Brock Lesnar
He's the big boss; the dragon at the castle. It's a testament to his ability that he was able to play a babyface at all in late 2002 and 2003, and even now as an ass-kicking monster. If there were a true babyface on the rise in WWE, Brock Lesnar would make the perfect heel opponenet for them at WrestleMania though, and that speaks loudly about his worth as the top heel even now that he's the top face.

6. Eddie's early work in Mexico as a heel was amazing. His heel work with Los Guerreros in 2002 and 2003 led to him being too popular to keep the in the heel role, and he eventually became a beloved babyface act, until he found even more new life after re-inventing himself as a heel in 2005 with the Rey Mysterio storyling. They could never get people to hate him for long, but his heel work was sublime. His face work was very, very over though. You could easily make a case for both.

Lawler - never saw the stuff where he was good. Only really saw him in WWE. So no comment.

Hogan - No question, babyface. Anyone who disagrees is trying to be ironic or something

Slaughter - Never saw him when he was any good

Austin - See Hogan

Lesnar - whatever he is now.

Eddie - babyface with a bit of comedy, like he was in 2004.

1. Jerry Lawler
Gonna go with heel, because a dude who calls himself a King should be a little full of himself. Also a lot of his face stuff is "cringe-worthy". I base this on only WWE.

2. Hulk Hogan
He was a fantastic heel, but I think you just can't go against Hulk Hogan as a face. A role model for an entire generation. Either way he could really work the crowd.

3. Sgt. Slaughter
I honestly don't know/can't remember. I will arbitrarily pick face, because as a kid I always wanted to root for him because of his G.I. Joe connection.

4. Steve Austin
I am a crazy man who disliked Stone Cold Steve Austin as a face. He was good in the feud vs. Bret Hart as a heel, and then I pretty much didn't care for him until he turned heel again. Heel all the way.

5. Brock Lesnar
Before his current face run, I'd say heel easily.... but his current run as the unstoppable beast as a face is pretty immense. Been 20+ years since we have had a face that looked so "strong", so it is pretty special. In fact, all his face runs have seemed more "special" than his heel runs. His heel runs were good stuff, but we have "seen" the "monster heel" before.... The "monster face" is more rare....

6. Eddie Guerrero
So great at both, but I think his best work probably as a heel. Just the way he could get the fans to hang onto every word.....

1. Jerry Lawler- heel as commentator and wrestler.

2. Hulk Hogan- great at both but Hulkamania is bigger than the NWO

3. Sgt. Slaughter- heel

4. Steve Austin- great at both but playing the Bobby face kicking his heel bosses as was the greatest

5. Brock Lesnar- heel, wasn't a IG fan of his early face run when Paul flipped to the Big Show. Today he has the oppertunity to be a bad ass face that can draw better than anyone on the roster

6. Eddie Guerrero- I lie, I cheat , I steal, heel
