Let's be honest: Memphis is the Arena Football League of wrestling. Funk's titles mean a heck of a lot more.

It does, but the stytle and the psychology is the building block taught to every who breaks in. Its the core foundation. The impact made in Evansville/Memphis is pretty important. Funks peak was WAY higher but Lawlers impact was bigger...

Lawler came to the WWE late on, past his peak and was the best heel on the roster. I think that run in WWF was important for a debate like this. It confirmed his talent and showed that even past his peak, he could do it on the big stage.
He was excellent at what he did and pretty effortlessly got himself over in WWF too at that stage of his career. |

Absolutely love watching old Lawler stuff so I went with him, but it's a close call.

I went with Lawler, but I am not convinced by my answer. My first thought was that they are about equals, very great at basically everything in almost equal measure. I went with King, because I think it is understated just how amazing it is that a dude can stay as over as he can in one place for the period that he did. People often say "Lawler was only big in Memphis," but yeah, that's all he needed to do. Others needed to get out and move around.

By the way, Lawler is challenging for the ROH World Title. Still got it.

Spellbinder was a cock to me and my niece once (he made her cry) and I was super pissed at him for that the whole show and the ride home. I have lots of fond memories. |

Back when the Poffos ran their renegade promotion out of Paducah KY there were these guys (I know them) and Randy Savage had gotten mad heat off them that night. Anyways Savage drove the Macho Van. Shitty van with airbrushing on savage on the side. Not smart for a heel. During the show they went out to the lot and busted his windows and slashed his tires

Love the simplicity of that angle. Nothing overly dramatic or anything but in one night it sold an eventual Lawler vs Flair match like crazy.

I watched it on WADL TV 38 out of Detroit. They used to show USWA, Smokey Mountain back to back and later on used to show WWF Shotgun/Metal/Jakked

Man...geez...been so long...Channel 6 I guess it was...or was that ICW...man I dunno. I feel like it was the NBC affiliate though.
I remember we had an Antenna on the house and it was the only way we could pick it up. Wanna say Channel 5...? And maybe our local NBC was Channel 6? |

Let's not blow our load too fast.
I think Kenny King would be a proper first opponent. |

Also, I'm sorry you had to experience a wrestler being a dickhead to you and your niece...not cool of him at all and v. unprofessional "IMHO". Hope someone else made him cry like a baby backstage that night so he knows how it feels. |
