The Rock joins TKO board of directors, granted full ownership of “THE ROCK” trademark

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TKO Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: TKO) (“TKO”), a premium sports and entertainment company, has appointed Dwayne Johnson to its Board of Directors, effective today.

Johnson, one of the most decorated WWE Superstars in company history and the most followed American man globally on social media platforms, brings decades of experience in live entertainment and sports to the Board. Through his expansive business portfolio, which includes Seven Bucks Productions, Teremana Tequila, ZOA Energy, Project Rock, and the recently combined spring football league, the United Football League (UFL), Johnson has significant experience identifying and cultivating revenue generating media rights, live events, sponsorship, licensing, and social media opportunities. The appointment of Johnson reflects TKO’s commitment to delivering long-term value and strong performance for shareholders through strategic growth initiatives across both UFC and WWE.

Vince McMahon, Executive Chairman of the Board, TKO, said: “Very few people on the planet understand the convergence of sports, entertainment, media, and business like Rock. We are proud to have him join the TKO board to help take our company to new heights.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, said: “My grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, and my dad, Rocky ‘Soulman’ Johnson, would’ve never thought this day would come. Which is why I’m very humbled to have a seat at the table that has decades of history and family legacy for me. A table that my family helped to build. Being on the TKO Board of Directors, and taking full ownership of my name, ‘The Rock’, is not only unprecedented, but incredibly inspiring as my crazy life is coming full circle. At my core, I’m a builder who builds for and serves the people, and Ari is building something truly game changing. I’m very motivated to help continue to globally expand our TKO, WWE, and UFC businesses as the worldwide leaders in sports and entertainment — while proudly representing so many phenomenal athletes and performers who show up every day putting in the hard work with their own two hands to make their dreams come true and deliver for our audiences. I’ve been there, I’m still there and this is for them.”

Ariel Emanuel, CEO, TKO, said: “I am thrilled to partner with Dwayne and welcome his immense talent to TKO’s Board. Dwayne brings an incredible track record of creating content and building globally recognized consumer brands, and he will play a key role in realizing our ambitions for TKO.”

WWE has also entered into a services and merchandising agreement with Johnson that provides for his promotional, licensing, and other services, and an intellectual property assignment agreement pursuant to which Johnson has secured ownership of the trademarked name, “The Rock”. The name is derived from his father, WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, who was the first Black champion in WWE history (alongside partner Tony Atlas). Johnson’s grandfather, Peter Maivia, a Samoan-American professional wrestler, was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008.

The addition of Johnson, as well as today’s appointment of Brad Keywell to TKO’s Board of Directors, will increase TKO’s board from 11 to 13 members.

IDGAF what anyone says, I am excited AF for Rock v. Roman at WrestleMania XL, and I hope they don’t let a few Salty Sally's and Sam's bitching and moaning online stop them from going through with the match.

It isn't people only online. It's people who have watched for years and invested their time (maybe money?) to have something pulled away from them for a "part-timer" schtick that has plagued Mania for a while now.

Obviously Rock v Roman is the big money match, and will outdraw any CAWdy program, ever. I understand it from a business perspective 100%.

From someone who watches regularly to just have something "upended' suddenly, would kinda suck.

The idea of a triple threat at mania for a title also sucks. Perhaps I'm too old, but I always though of Mania championship matches as the big ending to feuds, which should be 1v1 without any shenanigans.

I do not watch the current product, as it became too predictable and also stuff similar to this happening just kinda taking interest out of it all.

That being said, a multi man main event would have been great at last year's WM. Reigns/Zayn/Owens/Jey Uso

Roman/Cody was a fine choice for last year. Zayn & Jey got their spot. Not everything can happen all at once all the time.

Ideally it should have been a solo Zatn/Reigns at that Mania but I would have been fine with the multi man last year too was my point

You’re allowed to prefer that if you want, but I think things worked out really tidy for them. They did pretty well navigating the Cody/Zayn dynamic. My idea was to have Reigns and Zayn be the last two in the Chamber in Montreal. Zayn vs. LA Knight (still technically a heel) at Mania. Knight would have been trying to worm into The Bloodline’s good graces his own way. Zayn would help Cody in the main event. Then you’d get the windfall of Zayn being in Saudi Arabia.

But the way they did it worked. I think Reigns/Cody made total sense as the main event.

I’m still skeptical that yesterday’s announcement wasn’t a pivot from the original plan because otherwise Cody’s promo on Smackdown makes no sense in any other context. But I will say the one thing I thought they would never do is turn the Rock heel. With how sensitive the Rock is about his brand I thought he’d never agree to it. So this turn of events has definitely gotten my interest.

So this turn of events has definitely gotten my interest.
Its 100% a pivot, glad there doing it but anyone who says this is the plan hasnt been paying attention.

The working of the IWC is great, happy to see both companies engaging in it.

Lol I love how none of you can admit you got worked. You sound like Meltzer whining about plans changing when he gets it wrong for the 8 millionth time. I called this when they announced Rock was on the board and then his daughter was suddenly named GM of NXT for no reason. They are making The Rock a heel authority figure in the vein of the McMahons.

Gonna be extra funny when he screws Cody and wins the title and then comes out the next night and says he isnt the peoples champ, hes the corporate champ and all you marks need to know your role and shut your mouth.

There are reasons to think this was a plan from the start. Rock dropping the line on the Raw with Jinder predates Cody winning the Rumble. Why do that line if there isn’t a plan for Rock to work?

The Cody/Rock SmackDown thing is the only thing that doesn’t really fit that. Cody did give him the shot. But if they did that for effect KNOWING the backlash it would cause? Pretty smart.

They probably went into it with a Plan A, Plan B, etc. If Rock/Roman caused world peace, they’d have run with that. But I don’t think they were as caught off by this reaction as some people think. They teased all the potential things they could do, and Heel Rock with Roman won out.

Rock’s subtle heel invitations during the press conference were amazing. He’s so good at fostering the crowd reaction he wants.

I don't get this line everyone has about Cody stepping aside for The Rock not making sense. Has no one ever changed their mind about anything? He stepped aside for Rock because it's best for business, then he listened to Seth, Drew, Roman and Rock talk for a couple weeks. He "listened" to the fans. And he decided he's not being pushed aside, he's going to do what he wants and he's fighting Roman and finishing his story.

It’s just the clunkiest part of the story and it does make the babyface seem wishy-washy. Ideally, you’d explain this better heading into the press conference. Did Cody really give a why? He didn’t in the SmackDown promo besides “I’m going to take everything from you,” which doesn’t really fit the whole “I want to be WWE Champion” thing.

I see why people don’t see it as seamless storytelling. But what you laid out is the obvious story: Cody is a smart businessman. Rock going against Roman is the match he thought people wanted fo see. It helps WWE, it helps Raw, it helps the World Heavyweight Title and Netflix. He ALMOST let Rock talk him into it (well, he did let Rock talk him into it). He listened to the fans; realized that Rock is self-serving; heard his family being disrespected at the conference.

Roman played his part excellently too. He got way too cocky and tipped his hand.

The more I think about it, the more I think this was a total work. I was thinking they may have prepared for a few outcomes, but I’m inclined to think that if Rock had been cheered madly in the spot, they would have still found a way for the angle at the press conference to occur.

Rock may not want to do a full length main event match against Roman, just given the logistics — as talented workers as both guys are (Rock more mentally now). But Rock needed to come in and tease something with Reigns. The way they dangled Rock/Roman in front of people was just too clunky to be sincere build to that particular match.

I think they wanted to position fans more behind Cody (and eventually Seth), and Rock was probably planning to go heel from the start.

* They would have built Cody/Seth more purposefully — probably starting before the Rumble. That way it wouldn’t have been so “Cody is absolutely going to choose Roman and there is no other way!” after he won the Rumble. Cole was very specific to stay away from ambiguity when Cody won. I don’t know if it was Pat or Corey who basically nudged in and made sure Cole didn’t leave any doubt.

* Cody walking away in the Rock/Roman segment. That made him feel displaced as opposed to someone actually using his agency. He could have hung around, smiled on Heyman’s face at ringside, etc.

* Even the walk Roman and Rock did to the face-to-face spot seemed…weird. I thought they might have just been trying a different way of doing it, but it seemed so…orchestrated. Like they were “in-step.” Kind of thematically in-line with the now revealed idea that Rock wants the match because of pure nepotism.

If Rock had been cheered, I imagine we might have gotten Cody agreeing to the Seth match and as he’s about to sign or whatever, Roman starts taunting him. “Go on, you little bitch. We both know why you’re really signing. You’re pathetic, you failed last year, you’d fail this year. There’s only one Royal Family in professional wrestling and it’s mine.”

That sort of shit. Roman tells Cody no one from his family is ever holding his belt. Cody decides not to sign. It might not be the smartest decision, but he’s going after Roman, because his family would be ashamed to see him acting this way. Rock then comes out and in a more shocking version of what actually happened, turns to Cody and tells him to stop talking shit about his family. Boom! Cody was warned what would happen if he went against The Bloodline.

All the pieces are there to get to where we currently are even with a universally accepted Rock.
