Let's talk about comics, maaaan
Yeah, let's talk about comics.
What are you fools currently reading? Me? I'm still plodding through that chronological x-men ish. Here I'm getting to the end of the original noblecrayfish packages (I'm in like 2004/2005 now), I go to check for new ish and I find everything's been revised and organized into different packages. It's all good tho cuz the new dude was nice enough to point out where the old system ends and the new one picks up. Maaaan, X-Men got so much better in 2002/2003. Like the late 90s and 2000/2001 made me wanna kill myself. Right now I'm reading ish like Madrox and District X and it's pure awesome. Also, finally got around to getting a torrent of the entire events leading up to, during and immediately after Civil War. Should be sex. They are like the official marvel scans converted to CBZ apparently. Huzzah. Did you fuggas know that there is a bigass Marvel Chronology project going on rn? Like everything Marvel starting from Fantastic Four #1 or some ish? Insane. Yeah, so talk about comics. |

Also, I am severly lacking in terms of the DC universe.
Recommend me some titles to follow. Like obviously I know Flash, GL, Batman and all the really well known JLA names and ish but what about other stuff? Also, I'd really like to get into Batman, but I'd rather skip past the really campy shit that resembled the 1960s tv show. Help me out here. |

Ed Brubaker's run on Captain America, has been one of the best runs on any comic ever.
Secret Ivasion is obviously a must read. Real good stuff. I like the marvel crossovers better than the DC ones, just because there is just way too much shit happening all at once in all the Crisis events. It's not that I lack the intelligence to follow it, I just feel it's better when they keep everything simpler, as it allows for a better focus on the characters themselves. Identity Crisis was actually like that, and I like it better than the other DC crossovers. Th relaunches of Thor and Hulk are both good. As for X-books. Cable is really good too, but you'll have to read Messiah Complex first. The new x-force is pretty kick-ass. Basically, wolverine leads a team of stealth operatives(x-23, warpath, wolfsbane) that perform missions without the "x-men don't kill" moral code. Also, you def need to read The Boys. |

Oh, and I know you said you already know to get Green Lantern. But just to make sure, get Green Lantern: Rebith, The ongoing series that started after it, and Green Lantern Corps. GL is seriously the best thing DC has going right now. Proof of that is that I actually like it. Usually the only thing I care about in DC is Batman or Elseworlds.

Batman I'd recommend (graphic novels): Batman: Year One Justice League: Tower of Babel (the story revolves around Batman) The Killing Joke The Man Who Laughs Trinity (A graphic novel about Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman's first meeting) The Long Halloween Dark Victory (sequel to Long Halloween, introduction of Robin) The Dark Knight Returns Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth That's what I can name that I've got off the top of my head from Batman. Some other awesome DC stuff: Kingdom Come (one of the best graphic novels I've ever read, period) Red Son (Elseworlds tale where Superman landed in Russia instead of the United States during the Cold War) Identity Crisis (the only graphic novel that has brought me on the verge of tears) Justice If you want me to elaborate on what any of them are about, let me know. |

I mostly only stick with DC stuff, because it's what I grew up on. With the exception being that I own Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle so I have some classic street cred.
I am currently reading Batman & Son and keeping up on Batman R.I.P. Grant Morrison's run on Batman has been nothing short of awesome. |

Grant Morrison is awesome in general. Too bad Marvel fucked up his x-men run, by retconning everything.

Here is what I currently read monthly:
Astonishing X-Men Uncanny X-Men X-Men: Legacy Secret Invasion X-Men Testament: Magneto Cable X-Men: Manifest Destiny Sub-Mariner: The Depths Trinity (although I am about 10 issues behind) Terror Titans Secret Six Final Crisis Final Crisis Revelations Final Crisis Rogues Revenge Final Crisis Legion of 3 Worlds Final Crisis Superman Beyond 3-D 1985 Batgirl Deadpool Back to Brooklyn Read in trades: Mighty Avengers New Avengers Avengers: The Initiative Criminal Daredevil Fables Jack of Fables The Boys Thor She-Hulk The Punisher (MAX) Green Lantern Green Lantern Corps Teen Titans Batman Superman JLA JSA Batman and the Outsiders Moon Knight Immortal Iron Fist Captain America Ex Machina Walking Dead The Boys That's all, off the top of my head. Some of the stuff I collect in trade I am thinking about switching to monthlies (esp. Green Lantern and JSA). And some of those monthlies are minis i.e. Batgirl (which I don't know why I am sticking with), Terror Titans, and Secret Six, and Final Crisis plus tie-ins. I am actually enjoying Final Crisis more than Secret Invasion, which is why I haven't picked up any SI tie-ins. Although I don't think either crossover has been all that spectacular so far. And Cable I am giving until issue 10 for something to happen. #7 was good and restored my hope for the series so we will see. |

I don't have any specific issues you should avoid as far as camp, but Batman got campy around 1956 and then started to get grim and gritty again when Neal Adams started writing for him in 1969. |

If you like the Madrox mini-series, be sure to read the X-Factor ongoing series that follows it up.
Modern Batman is a bit hard to recommend as a lot of from the 90s onwards is structured around big crossover events - for the "Batman Family" as a whole, meaning it can be split over a lot of titles - stuff like Knightfall/Knightsquest/Knightsend, No Man's Land and War Games being the most obvious. Grant Morrison's run is definitely worth checking, starting with the Batman and Son arc, which leads into the Black Glove and currently ongoing Batman R.I.P. arcs. Most of the stuff CoE recommended is stuff that falls early in Batman's career, so to add to those I'd also suggest Batman & the Mad Monk and Batman & the Monster Men - basically two modernized adaptions of early Batman storylines set during the "Year One" period. I'm only a little bit into it, but I'm quite enjoying 52 - focuses on some fairly minor members of the DC universe, but deals with what happens in the gap between the end of Infinite Crisis and the One Year Later stories that followed it. Might help to read Infinite Crisis beforehand, but that's quite a big undertaking... |

Yeah, so I guess I'll see if I can find some sort of chronological Batman project. That would seriously be immense.
For all you guys reading the various X-titles (including Deadpool), what point did you start from? Like I said, I got a chronological x-men torrent (had been reading it in the 90s before that tho) and basically have read almost every x-men comic (and related titles) all the way from #1 all the way back in 1963. |

I started picking up the recent run of Uncanny when Brubaker started, Astonishing with Whedon, and adjectiveless/Legacy with Carey. Deadpool is only 2 issues in so far.
I don't download comics. |

Get on demonoid and get the Revised Chronological X-Men torrents. It's got everything related to X-men ever in them. Like I said, there are 18 torrents in total right now.

I know there isn't a whole lot of love for Superman on these boards, but Geoff Johns' current run on Action Comics is freakin' amazing. Particularly his revamps of General Zod and his current arc with Brainiac. Each one of them could stand alone as a movie (and a better one than Singer's disappointment)
Also, Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman is my new favorite comic of all time. Volume 1 is already out in trades, and Volume 2 shouldn't be far behind now that the series has wrapped up. Even if you hate Supes with a passion, I recommend giving this one a shot. Aside from that, and the ones from U-Warrior and CofE's lists, a few more DC picks: Superman: Birthright (my favorite take on the Superman origin) Superman for All Seasons (another good origin, from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale) Lex Luthor: The Man of Steel (really dark story from the '100 Bullets' guy) For Tomorrow (another dark one from Azarello, has a lot of craziness with genetic super-soldier monsters and the Phantom Zone) Sacrifice (Supes flips out while being mind-controlled, nearly kills Batman, slugs it out with Wonder Woman, and sets the stage for Infinite Crisis) Up, Up, and Away! (the 'One Year Later' starting point following Infinite Crisis, has a great showdown with Luthor) Secret Identity (one of the best and most tragically overlooked Elseworld stories out there) Batman: Year One (Frank Miller's take on the origin, and the only Miller book I like) No Man's Land (one of the big 90s events, introduces Harley Quinn) Batman and Son Others: Wonder Woman: Gods and Mortals (pretty much the only WW book worth reading) The Flash: Rogue War Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps JLA: Identity Crisis JLA: Tower of Babel And it's not DC, but Invincible is the best indy comic out there, hands-down. Seriously, I have a crapload of unread trades. And yet I goto the comic store every weekend and get more. It's a sickness.
But yes, Geoff Johns is the man. |

Current DC Books that are Awesome/Good:
Booster Gold Green Lantern Green Lantern Corps Justice Society of America Action Comics Superman (Actually, the last story (which was by a writer I love) was one of the worst Supes story I've ever read... but... starting now, it's crossing over with Geoff's Action and so could get better) Supergirl (Actually, this book was horrible, but starting last issue, it has begun to tie in more with Superman and Geoff's stuff, which makes it good) Manhunter Current Vertigo books that are Awesome/Good: Army@Love Fables Jack of Fables Current Marvel Comics that are good: Captain America Criminal Daredevil Guardians of the Galaxy Kick-Ass Nova Immortal Iron Fist The Twelve (I think this is destined to become a classic) Current Other books that are Awesome/good: Angel: After the Fall Buffy Season Eight (Actually, this one is largely hit or miss. Mostly miss) |

I forgot to mention Hush, Hush is immense.
But Red Son is one of my favorite Superman stories of all time. There were so many holy shit moments for me. The only thing I've read with more moments like that is Kingdom Come. I have Batman and Son laying around my house, but haven't read it. Then I need to read Black Glove. Without having read those, though, Batman R.I.P. is bad ass so far. |

My roomate is bigger into comics than I have been in recent years. He keeps on buying the new silent hill series, and its pretty good stuff. Bare Bones art style, but the atmosphere it creates is spot on with other silent hill fare.

My friend let me borrow a book I've never heard of called Wormwood last night. I know absolutely nothing about it, but he says it's amazing. And me and him are pretty in sync when it comes to comics. Anyone have any opinion on it?
Also, finished the comic version of Wanted a few months ago and forgot it was good. So, I mention it now. |
