I recently watched Matt Sydal vs some Japanese guy in ROH
.... and wtf happened to Evan Bourne? Honestly, what a horrendous match. Don't get me wrong, these are two athletic guys and they can do some unbelievably "cool" things in the ring. I like Sydal... he had some great matches in the big leagues and has potential to be a big league star (He IS in fact a star, just not at a main stream level... I just have a hard time taking too much away from him since he is clearly making a great living doing what he loves).
I'm kind of digressing from my point... but it's something much talked about with ROH yet I don't know if can be driven home enough. They did all of these spots with no rhyme or reason. It was ridiculous. Nothing looked natural at all. They literally just went spot for spot and it looked like they were letting each other do moves. It didn't make any sense. I honestly don't even think Indy fans would like this type of match, and honestly the crowd seemed dead. I just don't get it... here's a guy in Sydal who knows how to work a match, and literally I found myself bored out of my skull because there wasn't even a semblance of a story. This is why I hate the old addage of how guys like Cesaro and Owens work "indy style" because they don't. Their style is big league because as much as there are certain nuances in selling maybe missing, their spots are fluent and don't look totally contrived. Watching Sydal and I think it was Kushida? completely put on a bush league performance drove me nuts as a wrestling fan. It's kind of like as a baseball/hockey/football fan watching your team under perform when you know they can put together a winning side. I can forgive a spot fest if it flows, but these guys were just doing moves and because of the awkwardness they didn't even look crisp or quick, although I'm sure they were moving quite fast. I'm depressed. cheer me up. Team Toxic 4 lyfe |

I watched Nakamura vs Shibata for the IWGP IC belt from last year. That cheered me up.

I don't think it was Sydal's fault as much as it was the other dude.

I hear brilliant things about KUSHIDA. Not sure if he's a spot-monkey though. New Japan did give him The Best of the Super Juniors Tournament though. I've heard that Sydal has snapped back into it a bit, and he's actually scheduled to face Kenny Omega for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at their next major show.
