@ Gray:
You realize the Uncle Ben bit is basically in every Spidey origin ever? How does one complain about that? |

liked this Spiderman better, because SPIDERMAN was better. Wise cracking, New York Accent, long body...this kid just belongs in a red/blue spandex suit

I havent seen the new film as of yet. However I cant see it topping the first 3 in terms of action and box office revenue. I believe the Spiderman 2 may be the 2nd highest grossing Spiderman film of all time, and I just can't see this new one reaching even that level.

The Amazing Spiderman made $35 MILLION in the United States. ON TUESDAY.
http://movies.yahoo.com/news/spidey-...153508646.html LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Amazing Spider-Man" has swung into action with $35 million domestically in its first day — a record for a film opening on Tuesday. The new launch for the Marvel Comics superhero outdid the previous best Tuesday debut of $27.9 million for "Transformers," which also opened the day before the Fourth of July in 2007. Box-office trackers had projected that "The Amazing Spider-Man" might earn around $120 million in its first six days, through the end of Fourth of July weekend. But its strong start indicates it could do considerably more. The original "Transformers" went on to do $155.4 million domestically through Fourth of July weekend, which included receipts from Monday night previews before its official Tuesday debut. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" opened the week before the Fourth of July last year and pulled in $180.7 million in just over six days. The opening-day results show the resilience of the Spider-Man brand, which set box-office records from 2002 to 2007 with the three films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero. After a falling out between Raimi and distributor Sony on a fourth film, the franchise started over, with Marc Webb directing and Andrew Garfield slipping into Spider-Man's red-and-blue suit. "The Amazing Spider-Man" retells the story of how a bite from a radioactive spider endows gangly teen Peter Parker with super strength, agility and senses. The film co-stars Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. Some critics had argued that it was too soon to reboot the franchise, just five years after Raimi and Maguire's "Spider-Man 3." But good reviews for "The Amazing Spider-Man" and a solid box-office start should put the carping to rest on the film, which also had a strong head-start overseas last week with about $50 million in a handful of international markets. Debuting on a Tuesday, "The Amazing Spider-Man" is far down the list of best opening days, since most movies premiere on Friday as the weekend kicks off. Last summer's "Harry Potter" finale had the best single-day start ever with $91.1 million. It's followed by last May's "The Avengers" with $80.8 million on its way to a record $207.4 million opening weekend. "Spider-Man 3" opened on a Friday in May 2007, taking in $59.8 million on day one and $151.1 million for the weekend, which was a record at the time. "The Amazing Spider-Man" is the middle chapter in Hollywood's superhero summer, which opened with Disney and Marvel's "The Avengers," whose worldwide receipts have climbed to $1.45 billion. On July 20, DC Comics and Warner Bros. debut "The Dark Knight Rises," the third and final Batman movie from director Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale as the masked vigilante. |

just got back from seeing this. Much better than i thought, and Garfield has officially become Spiderman. Couldnt help but keep thinking how awesome the banter would be between Spidey and Stark in a movie.

I enjoyed it. Garfield is perfect as Peter Parker / Spiderman. I never could take Tobey seriously - he just reminded me of 'The Wimpy Kid'. And in turn, the movies were more date flick, or mushy. (As an aside, ever since Nolan's Batman series, the whole trend of making superheroes a bit more realistic and believable has intrigued me)
@ Nowhere Man: Your review sums up most of my observations. Martin Sheen and Dennis Leary were excellent. Emma Stone and the Gwen Stacy character work better than Mary Jane simply because there's more for her to do. Its a well rounded character rather than the hackneyed love interest / damsel-in-distress. This retelling was far more believable as well. You know why Tobey Spidey defeated Bonesaw McGraw? Because it was a fucking movie. Do you really think someone could destroy the Macho Man? :-) |

GREAT movie. Although one thing sort of bugged me: it's been six or seven years since the last time I was in NYC, but are there really that many lizards just running around the streets of Manhattan?

Saw this yesterday and I thought it was great. I've never really cared for Spiderman as a character, but they actually had me interested in him. I think I actually liked this better than the Avengers.

Saw this today. Even with the row behind me filled with constantly talking, crying, whining children, and a couple a few seats away who were possibly giving each other handjobs; nothing would have been enough to stop me from fully enjoying this movie.
Garfield is fantastic as Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Emma Stone is amazing as always, and the action sequences could not have been any better. I never thought I would buy The Lizard as a live action villain, but Rhys Ifans pulled it off and had me sold. I can't wait to see more from Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield. I hope that Spider-Man becomes Marc Webb's thing. I was disappointed with the death at the end of the movie as I really loved that character and saw potential for more between him and our protagonist, but so be it. With how awesome The Lizard looked, I can't help but wonder if they will decide to revisit Venom and the symbiote in the future and do it RIGHT with a Hulk-like Venom and maybe even Carnage. That story is such a huge part of Spider-Man's story that I can't see them not revisiting it, and without the bullshit camp that we got from Sam Raimi, it could be really good. Either way, I loved it. An amazing appetizer which quelled my hunger as I await July 20th. |

I don't really see them going back to the symbiote any time soon. There's still a lot involving that whole Oscorp conspiracy subplot that was unresolved, so I imagine they're setting up for the Goblin in some form or another (hopefully without the Power Ranger mask this time). If the Venom symbiote is in it at all, I imagine it'll be one of Richard Parker's genetic experiments like in Ultimate Spider-Man.
And honestly, I don't want to see a re-tread of Venom, since Spidey has such an awesome rogue's gallery to choose from. I'd prefer to see villains we haven't seen before, like Mysterio or Vulture or Electro--hell, the whole platform of 'cross-species genetics' gives them a lot of wiggle-room to incorporate more of Spider-Man's animal-themed villains, like Rhino or Scorpion or Chameleon (yes, I know none of their powers are genetic in the comics, but work with me here). To me it seems like a waste of potential to ignore a great list of prospective villains in order to give a Mulligan to one, just because someone else screwed him up the first time. |

And how they whine about how every Spider-Man villain is a Jekyll and Hyde routine, which ten seconds on Wikipedia will tell you is flat-out untrue.

I like when they are funny and kill that guy.
...the major villains in the movies though are pretty much Jekyll and Hydes. |

Seriously, didn't the Lizard have several stories where he was out to turn the human race into lizards like him? For no other reason than "because ponies?" It's weird that people keep bitching about how this is untrue to the comics, but.... Quote:
Anyway, yeah, they kinda are. Though to be fair, Doctor Octopus was ALWAYS a dick in the comics. Instead of Jekyll and Hyde, he was a dick who turned into a megalomaniac. There was a desperate attempt in the Raimi films to make all the bad guys out to be sympathetic. |

Almost exactly why I avoid 'online video reviews'. Rather come here and read what you guys have to say. Many pretentious asses out there, particularly on YouTube, trying to be 'clever' and 'critical'. Angry Joe generation of reviewers.

Yeah I hope they don't bring Goblin back in this series, prefer some new villians. Only one i'd like to revisit would be Venom. He could be so much better than what we saw.
Hope they put in Spidey in a cameo for the Avengers as well |

As for his villains in the comics? Honestly, the only one I can think of in his A-List that really counts is Lizard. Goblin, Doc Ock (again, comic version, not movie version), Kingpin, Mysterio, Sandman, Venom, Carnage, Vulture......none of them fit the bill. He's got a pretty high concentration of mad scientists, but not Jekyll-and-Hyde mad scientists. |

I'm going to see the movie regardless, however I love Red Letter Media and I find their reviews to be entertaining all by themselves. I have disagreed with them about a lot of stuff, but the show comes off as less pretentious than a lot of other ones (Fuck Roger Ebert). I always get the feeling that, though they have some pretty good knowledge of movie making and story structure, it's more about their personal feelings and taste then "this movie is definitely bad"...with exceptions of course like Jack and Jill and other films that were pretty terrible.
Letting a bad review prevent you from seeing something seems dumb, but if a reviewer you usually agree with gives a bad review of a film isn't he saving you a couple of bucks? |
