Wrestle Kingdom 9 Thoughts? (Podcast question)

So for this weeks podcast, the panel will be reviewing Wrestle Kingdom 9, and I wanted to get some opinions from anybody here that saw the show and wanted to chime in with some responses to these questions:

1 - Favourite match and why?

2 - What did you think of the commentary, if you saw it in English?

3 - What were your thoughts on the show overall, and the outcomes?

As always we'll be reading as many as possible on the show and discussing what you think, am keen to get a feel for people's opinions on the event...

1. Nakamura/Ibushi. Because it was the best match I've seen this year. Admittedly it's from the only wrestling show I've watched this year but still, best match I've seen for a while and I'm far from the biggest strong-style fan

2. Didn't watch it in English

3. It was alright. The top two matches stood out, hated Okada kicking out of 2 straight High Fly Low's but they "got it back" with the finish I guess, still a bit unnecessary. Loved Okada "crying" at the end. Not enough Honma or Toru Yano. Too much crammed into one show. Great little sequence between Goto and Anderson towards the end of the tag match. Realized that a "Super Styles Clash" from the buckles is actually safer than taking the regular version. Really liked AJ's single leg figure 4 gimmick as well. Nakamura was so head and shoulders above everybody else that it was ridiculous. That's about it.

I have never got the appeal of two guys stiffing the shit out of each other. Nothing they do means anything, especially when Nakamura has to hit the Boma Ye 50 times to win a match, or Tanahashi hitting the High Fly Low a billion times. I'm not going to shit on anyone for liking it, but it's just not my cup of tea. Ross and Striker didn't add anything because I can't understand the Japanesse guys promos. I'm not emotionally invested. I'm definitely more of a "sports entertainment" fan than a pure wrestling fan, so shows like this don't do a lot for me.

I enjoyed it it was oddly fun to watch in contrast to last nights 3 hr RAW which felt more like a chore during certain parts.Maybe because unlike Gertner I'm not big on sports entertainment especially when its been really inconsistent in quality.

1) Nakamura and Ibushi hands down. Nakamura was tremendous in all aspects that night.

2) Watched it the first time in Japanese from NJPW World, then rewatched some matches in English for JR and Striker's take. Loved their call of the Makabe/Ishii match.

3) I thought the show was great. Would've been happier if Okada went over, but this gives Tanahashi some fresh matches for the year. Also, AJ in New Japan is treated as more of a big deal than he was in TNA.

1 - Favourite match and why?
Nakamura/Ibushi. Great match in the ring and JR hyping up the IC belt as a huge deal to own is refreshing compared to what gets done in the WWE.

2 - What did you think of the commentary, if you saw it in English?
Saw it in English and felt the Striker/JR pairing was good overall. Liked how JR started to get more comfortable as the show went on which really helped the later matches.

3 - What were your thoughts on the show overall, and the outcomes?
Good show overall. Felt a bit rushed because of time issues but the matches were still great. Omega as the new Jr champion should be great for the division.

1. Nakamura v Ibushi. So fucking hard hitting. And Ibushi showed me a new side that I didn't know he had.
2. Japanese, loved it too lol
3. Early contender for show of the year. Will be extremely difficult to top. Every match delivered and quite a few exceeded expectations. Not really a fan of Tanahashi retaining as I feel it's Okada's time, but I guess Tanahashi isn't quite done just yet. Plus with Okada crying like a girl it really opens up a new side of him we haven't seen. I'm excited to see who they put in front of Tanahashi next, AJ again? Togi? They can't possibly do more Tanahashi-Shinsuke matches after they feuded for like six months last year can they? Personally, I'm hoping for Kota Ibushi to be the one to dethrone Hiroshi Tanahashi. He proved he can do it.

They typically hit harder in NJPW than in WWE, but not THAT hard. I think a big reason for all the stiff shots was that Ibushi is a junior who has just graduated to the heavyweight division, and they wanted to establish his credibility as a tough competitor who can hang with the big dogs.

Also, loved that they got the crazy PRIDE announcer for the Suzuki vs Sakuraba introductions.

Anyone else catch JR's little shot at WWE and their IC title?

"Why would you ever want one of your titles to have less credibility than the rest of your titles?"

That is a great point by JR, and it's one I'm constantly thinking about when watching WWE TV. Why does Dolph Ziggler want to be the IC Champion so badly, when he has already proven he can be the World Heavyweight Champion? At least have him drop a reference to Savage/Steamboat making him a wrestling fan or something. I used to like it how Chris Jericho would really make the IC Title seem like "his title," and how badly he wanted to win it.

Shinsuke Nakamura is pretty amazing. He's got this larger than life aspect that I think Gertner would even appreciate. Not a dig at The Gert, just due to his tastes. I kind of get Tanahashi retaining. He's the cornerstone of New Japan at the moment, and a big victory at such an important event for New Japan establishes him in the mind of new viewers as so. Okada will be fine, and this actually sets him on a trajectory of trying to prove that his victories over Tanahashi in the past weren't a peak for him. I'm not sure who dethrones Tanahashi at this point, but I don't think a title change is urgent anyway.

Yeah, Tanahashi will probably hold it for a little while longer.

There are so many guys on the roster right now, that could potentially dethrone him that it's very hard to predict what they will do.

Still waiting for Naito to finally get his first run with the title.

Love the responses here, we did get to read a good few of them on the show which is now up - the SCG panel reviewing the whole show top to bottom, talking all the matches and outcomes, thoughts on JR & Striker, future directions and more. An interesting show, as the panel is a mix of New Japan regulars and newbies, and there are some differing opinions that were surprising with the show watched through different eyes. A really fun show to do, check it out and let me know what you think.

I realize I'm late on the topic, BUT.....

First let me say that I haven't watched any wrestling outside the US for quite some time, probably 8 years or so and this event totally got me hyped to catch up on NJPW and Noah. It was refreshing to see the wrestling take center stage. I'm so used to seeing 20 backstage segments that I don't give two fucks about and JR even mentioned the pacing of the show during the broadcast, I loved it.

1) Nakamura vs Ibushi by far but I have to give a strong honorable mention to the NEVER open weight match.

2) Watched it in English. I've always liked Striker on commentary, so I loved hearing him call another big event that you could tell he was really excited for. JR was a bit out of his element and you could definitely tell, but seemed to get into a grove towards the end of the night. It's always good to hear JR call a match. On a side note; some english subtitles on the english broadcast would be nice.

3) I loved the show. The opening tag match set the tone and was exactly what I would expect from those guys. There were vignettes, but nothing that went on too long and no painfully dull backstage segments to sit through. Each match brought something different, and as I said, it made me want to get back into Japanese wrestling.
