The Trial Of Kevin Nash
So for this weeks Squared Circle Gazette, we do the third show in our "Court Case" format, debating whether Kevin Nash was guilty of gross malpractice for his failed runs as WWF Champion and WCW Booker. Does this culminate in an execution? He should be executed solely for ending Goldberg's "streak". It was way too early to end the streak, not the right event (Goldberg was shit hot in WCW at the time, had the best year of his career and deserved to end it by being the champ at WCW's version of Wrestle Mania, Starrcade), and he wasn't the right guy to end it but not sure who was maybe a face Sting, or Bret Hart or even Benoit.

Other than that he failed to seize the opportunity to be a trend setter, a trail blazer by implementing titty-honking matches. We had the Nitro Girls, Molly Holly, Gorgeous George, Madusa, Major Gunns, Stacy Keibler etc. Plenty of opportunity but he let it go in favor of the fingerpoke of doom.

Well, I had the pleasure of defending Big Kev and came under heavy fire on this show. Regardless, Nash does get way too much shit for 1995, his reign is one of the more questionably booked for a genuine effort to make a top guy, even with a poor roster to work with, the choices they made didnt help him...

proper booking could have given Goldberg a month off to "heal", have him come back at a January ppv and screw hall for a nice superbrawl one on one.


However, what happened in jan 4th, was THE biggest pile of shit I have ever seen.Nash should have been fired and hung on jan 5th

I decided to rethink my earlier points.

Of course the streak was going to end some time but was Nash the right man to do it? From a physical perspective yes but I think a hyped up face DDP or Benoit, or even Hart or Sting would have been better.

Benoit was a few years off from being the big thing and I thought with the way Havoc 98 panned out (that match was superb) it would have been the first of many encounters between DDP and Goldberg.

I just think much like how Bryan got his moment, Goldberg should have had his moment at Starrcade. Maybe WCW didn't invest that amount of emotion/prestige into Starrcade to consider it the WCW's Wrestle Mania and maybe Goldberg's zenith was the edition of Nitro in the Georgia Dome when he beat Hogan. Other than Havoc, Goldberg never had an outstanding WCW PPV world title main event. But this isn't about Goldberg it's about Nash.

When I remember back to that fateful night maybe it was my naivety as a teen but I was buzzing with excitement at the thought of a reunified NWO and having Hogan back on TV and the champ again.

Maybe WCW were so desperate for ratings and seeing how big the NWO was before, they made the mistake in thinking it would work a second time. It didn't and it was a costly mistake.

Somehow though I don't the NWO revival, Goldberg etc was solely Nash's doing. He just gets the lion's share of the blame, maybe justifiably so.

But it wasn't the right time to end the streak or indeed his title run, he should have remained champ for at least beyond his one year anniversary of winning the belt then lost it to say Hart or an up and coming Benoit.

Crimes aside, a shit hot Benoit in WCW vs Goldberg for the title in a singles match would have been a ratings winner.

That's one thing I hated about the Death of WCW book, is the broad mentions of "Nash decided" to end Wrath's streak, win WW3 and pin Goldberg, when it wasn't hit decision to make. The book accusing Nash of trying to "nix" the Bret/Goldberg steel plate when Bret himself has said it was Nash's original idea always annoyed me too.

And as mentioned on the show - the mega nWo wasn't a bad idea on paper, but Hogan fucked it up by turning himself babyface then fucking off after Spring Stampede.

When I see a Kevin Nash interview I am reminded of one of my uncles who exaggerates and bullshits with the express purpose of making himself sound more important or cool than he really is. A lot of people are that way, but it's just annoying. And that's all I've got to say about that.

I need to read that book.

But yes whilst I admit I do get carried away with placing a lot of the blame on Nash, he wasn't alone and there were plenty of people behind the scenes and the wrestlers involved themselves (i.e. Goldberg etc.) who could have stepped in and said something but just didn't have the balls to do it.

I was a huge Goldberg fan back in the day but part of me wonders if the reason his "career" didn't last as long as it should have done and perhaps wasn't as prolific was because he wasn't fully committed etc.

Ultimately he only had one WM moment which we would all rather forget and other than beating the Rock and winning the WHC without much fanfare, his time in WWE was at best forgettable.
