TBH... the only match that (with) 100% honesty had me emotionally involved throughout was CM Punk's last ROH match against Colt Cobana. I'm sure that when I was younger there have been matches that I was really into because I still thought it was all real. I used to go to a ton of old WWF and NWA (WCW) shows and I'm sure that I got emotional over a Road Warriors or Ric Flair loss back then or really marked out and freaked over a Steamboat win.

There was just something special about that night in August of 2005.

Maybe it was the match. Maybe it was the atmosphere. Or maybe it was the fact that at one point in my life, I was good friends with both Phil and Scott. It was a hell of a night and it was great that it happened here in Chicago.

Rock vs Austin-Wrestlemania 15.
This was just a huge match in terms of how excited I was. 1999, and 2000 went on to be great years, but this match was the culmination of the greatest time period I've ever experienced watching a televised program, much less wrestling.
From Fall 98-this match, I have never been more engrossed. It was all leading up to this, and boy did it pay off. Austin winning after everything, the rock showing what he truly brought to the table, and the shock of someone kicking out of the stunner. The match is probably what cemented me as a lifelong fan.

WMXX- HHH vs Benoit vs Shawn Michaels. This is the match that kept me a fan. I had been disgusted by Triple H and the WWE in 2002 and 2003. I vowed to myself and those I watched with going into this match that if Benoit did not win the title, I would never watch wrestling again in my life. They vowed the same. Whether or not that would have held to be true (I swear it would have) is irrelevant. Because after the weeks leading up to it of anticipation, and the hours leading up to it of pure nervousness and anxiousness...it paid off. We were jumping up and down, getting in front of the screen and biting our nails until Benoit locked on the crossface. We were yelling TAP, TAP, TAP and then Triple H rolled over and seemingly out of the hold. We gasped, then Benoit locked it back in and we jumped right back up. Finally HHH tapped and we jumped to the ceiling (literally). Great night.

Goldberg vs Diamond Dallas Page. Halloween Havoc, I think, be damned if I know what year.

I know, it probably sounds terrible. You gotta understand, though--I barely watched any WWF at that point. I was a WCW man to be sure, and I was a massive Diamond Dallas Page mark. Back when I still collected action figures and thought it was all real, DDP was my freaking hero. He was cool. He was stylish. His finisher had a sweet name, and he could hit it from anywhere...making it one of the most devestating moves in WCW at the time, as far as I was concerned. Seriously, I'd sometimes watch for the sole purpose of seeing Page. I really think DDP did more to keep my attention on wrestling than Hogan did (I might have known of Hogan first, but I never watched wrestling to see Hogan).

Versus Goldberg. Cue music. Going against Goldberg was a guaranteed career funeral. This was in the hayday of his undefeated streak, when almost anyone who stepped into the ring with him was going to be made fodder of. I didn't care at the time, of course, not yet understanding the mechanics of the Job. All I knew was that if anybody could beat Goldberg, it was my main man DDP.

Holy fuck was I wrong. Was it a good match? I can't remember. It's one of the matches that stuck out the most in my mind, though, even though it was that damn long ago, and at a time that I didn't understand jack shit. I still remember the handshake and the respect hug and everything at the end. DDP lost the match, but he still looked like a million bucks...and I'd still mark out for that magnificent son of a bitch.

No match has got emotional meaning with me. It's a tv show.
