Christ.
So as some of you know, I moved a couple months ago and shitty DSL was all that's offered in this area. They advertise at like 14x faster than dial up. So my torrents are usually around the 10kb mark. I turn on my laptop's wifi just to see if anything is around, because I'm in an apartment building, and found a connection without a password. I log onto it and am now downloading torrents between 200kb-400kb.
How the fuck does this work. |

Someone else has a wireless connection and were too stupid to encrypt it.
Also, it could be that they have an aircard (I am not even sure what I am talking about) that I think allows you to connect via it to a satellite or something. Only vaguely know about this, but since you have shitty DSL I am guessing thats what the buddy whose Internets you are jacking is doing. Edit - Just read about them and it seems it only gives dialup speeds. My guess is that he has an encrypted incoming torrent flow which would allow for greater speeds. I believe a good explanation is in a thread Ogen made about Torrents, Ill have a look for it. Last edited by El Fangel; 01-08-2009 at 11:34 PM. |

You'd still be limited from what your connection pulls down. If I'm right, that pretty much just downloads the torrent to the server and you download from that.

I think you two are referring to two completely different things. Xero's talking about the seed box and you're talking about encryption in uTorrent.

G, what torrent program are you using? Perhaps your router isn't set up properly to make use of port forwarding?

I was using utorrent, but I messed up the settings and had to reinstall. I switched to bit torrent. I can't even download shit and surf at the same time. The torrents literally hog 100% of my connection. Things were so much better back when I had cable.
The port it uses is closed, but the one on my laptop was closed as well, yet it peaked at 400kbs. |

And Bit Torrent is total shit, to be totally honest. Also, have you tried a broadband test by any chance, just to see if it's just the torrents and not the shitty DSL? http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest |

Don't go use BitTorrent. Go back to utorrent.

I was getting 5k on torrents which is why I bought my seedbox, then just have to FTP it down (which works full-speed)
