For some, I can't pick just one, so I'll list the biggest possibilities
Best Picture
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Mystic River

One of these 2. Finding Nemo won't win, because it'll take best animated. American Splendor will likely be considered "too small" to win. a Few of the other movies have received mixed reviews, so they're out. LOTR and Mystic River are 2 movies that blew everyone away this year. I'd probably bet of LOTR though, since it's got that Epic quality. I'd love to see Kill Bill nominated, though.

Best Actor
Paul Giamatti - American Splendor
Bill Murray - Lost in Translation
Sean Penn-Mystic River.

Murray and Giamatti have been being raved about since they're movies came out. Mystic River was some of Penn's best work ever. Nicholson and Crowe are always possibilities, but Jack had a beeter shot last year. I'd love to see Johnny Depp nominated, but I'd rather see him nominated for Once Upon A Time In Mexico. No way Considine or Ejiofor get noms.

Best Actress
Jennifer Connelly - House of Sand and Fog
Hope Davis - American Splendor
Nicole Kidman - Cold Mountain
Charlize Theron - Monster

Charlize Theron seems to be the front runner for Monster, at least in the critics' eyes. I'd say Kidman or Connelly are more likely. Hope Davis has a shot with American Splendor.

Best Supporting Actor
Sean Astin - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Kevin Bacon - Mystic River
Tim Robbins - Msytic River

My heart's on Sean Astin, but Bacon and Robbins were too damn good. They may cancel each other out though.

Best Supporting Actress
Marcia Gay Harden - Mystic River
Scarlett Johansson - Lost in Translation
Laura Linney - Mystic River

I would think Hope Davis would be nominated for Best Actress for American Splendor. Johansson's a possibility because of Lost In Translations acclaim. but I'm hoping for Laura Linney, if only for her big speech at the end of the movie.

Best Director
Peter Jackson - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

If Peter Jackson does not win, I will personally strangle each member of the Academy. For the time and effort he put into the trilogy, he deserves to be rewarded.

Best Original Screenplay
Lost in Translation - Sofia Coppola

For some reason, I just think Lost In Translation will win.

Best Adapted Screenplay
American Splendor - Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens

I would say LOTR hands down, but American Splendor could upset.

Know nothing about the awards, but when did a movie have to be released for it to be up for any awards?

I know, but the studio is campaigning for her as a supporting actress nominee. I don't know why, as she's clearly a co-lead with Murray, but their focus is on supporting. Possibly because she may also get lead for "Girl With the Pearl Earring?"

Also, I just saw "The Last Samurai" tonight, and I want to add Ken Watanabe to my list of five Best Supporting Actor nominees. You know it's impressive if it makes me bump my man Chris Cooper.

Yeah it's weird. Emily Watson was being campaigned as a suporting actress too for Punch-Drunk Love last year. I don't know how they figure that.

I'm really shocked to see Depp get a nomination and 21 Grams only get 2 nominations. I could see the awards go a lot of different ways.

And where is Scarlet Johanson?

It should be a good show, can't wait to see the song from A Mighty Wind performed

My thoughts on all the major noms:

Best Picture
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Is anyone surprised by this? It's the worst (IMO) of the three LOTR movies, but was still better than almost anything else released this year. Plus, with 11 overall nominations, this looks like the film to beat on February 29th.

Lost in Translation
Every year, the Academy tries to pretend that they aren't biased against comedies by putting a comedy in the Best Picture category. This year, Sofia Coppola gets her Lost in Translation nominated. As much critical praise as this has had, it is a serious darkhorse for Best Picture.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
This is what the Oscars have come to represent to a lot of casual movie fans when a film like this gets 10 nominations. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but it's nowhere near my top five for the year. It seemed to be made with Oscars in mind, and the Academy lapped it up.

Mystic River
As much as I love the LOTR movies, this is, hands down, the best movie of the year. It's not a coincidence that Mystic got three out of four acting nominations, and Laura Linney and Kevin Bacon could also have slipped into the supporting categories with Marcia Gay Harden and Tim Robbins. A fantastic story, incredible acting...this is an Oscar voter's wet dream.

Seabiscuit
Although I haven't seen this, I have heard it was pretty good. This is the most surprising of the five nominees, though. I'm sure it made a lot of people's shortlists, but how many honestly put it in the top five? Big-time underdog on the 29th.

Best Picture Snub
Cold Mountain
I would have bet money that this would get a nomination here. A top-notch director, fantastic stars, and a fantastically-adapted script... This just baffles me.

Best Director
Sofia Coppola - Lost in Translation
Only the third woman ever nominated in this category, and the first American woman. If she wins this, it could change a lot of the way movies are made.

Clint Eastwood - Mystic River
This was a lock. The director of the best movie of the year? If this weren't the year of the last LOTR movie, Eastwood would get this award, but...

Peter Jackson - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Coming off his Golden Globe win, this is looking more and more like a sure thing. Pete has deserved this each of the last two years, and this is the year he finally takes it.

Fernando Meirelles - City of God
What? Um...what? I've heard this is a fantastic movie, but...what?

Peter Weir - Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World
He directed a big-budget movie with a huge star and a primarily oceanic setting. This is the kind of thing Oscar nominations are made of. Large scale, but a good story.

Best Director Snub
Anthony Minghella - Cold Mountain
What the hell?

Best Actor
Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
I still stand by my opinion that Captain Jack Sparrow was the singularly most unusual performance of the year. Depp OWNED that movie, but it just didn't seem like an "Oscar performance." I love it when I'm proved wrong.

Ben Kingsley - House of Sand and Fog
I've heard this was an excellent role for him, and an actor of his caliber will always be a front-runner in this category.

Jude Law - Cold Mountain
Law had such a heavy role in Mountain. He had to carry so much sorrow, so much anger in his face, and he did it perfectly. I'd say he's the "Next Big Thing," but I think he's already arrived.

Bill Murray - Lost in Translation
YES! Bill Murray = The Man, and it's nice to see him getting the recognition he deserves. He has very little chance of winning this, but still.

Sean Penn - Mystic River
Last year, Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago was the singular best performance I saw by anyone in anything. This year, Penn gets that nod. Mystic River was an actor's movie, and Penn seized that. If he doesn't win, I'll be very surprised.

Best Actor Snub
Russell Crowe - Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Just seemed to me that he could do no wrong in the Academy's eyes. A good role in a good movie, and he doesn't get the nom. I can't say I'm really disappointed, because I love that Depp and Murray got noms, but I am surprised.

I'll do Best Actress, the Supporting categories, and the Screenplay categories later.

I'm sort of thinking that Coppola may get the Best Director Award just because of all the politics in the Oscars. I'm sure that the Academy would love it if a woman won best director (sort of like Berry and Washington 2 years ago)

I haven't seen the other two, but City of God should have been in for best Foreign Film, and if not for that, it should have been up for Best Picture (Seabiscuit???????). Good to see the director getting a nomination, though.

SEAN PENN

I knew gay ass Lord of the Rings would win best picture and everything else, so whatever. Sean Penn won, Charlize Theron won, and Tim Robbins won. I just wanted Mystic River to win Best Picture and I would have been happy.

man...LOTR really cleand house...11 out of 11. Couldn't have been too much happier with the results... Iwould've liked to have seen Bill Murray win, but Sean penn was also very deserving.

I hate Lord of the Rings. My highlight was Sean Penn winning, Tim Robbins winning, and Sophia Coppola winning best screenplay.

I was happy with Penn and Robbins. I still haven't seen Lost In Translation.
