Once again my laptop's being crappy.

Yeah just a few months after resetting it all, it started doing the same thing. It's a crap old laptop I know, but I can't afford to replace it just now, so it'll have to do.

Basically, as in my other thread from a few months back, it was just freezing all the time after a couple of minutes, except in Safe Mode. So I did the reset thingy again, and all was fine. Then my friend gave me an external hard drive to throw all my files on just so I didn't have to go through the rigmarole of copying them all to disc again if it were to crash again.

So I put all the files on there, and the laptop was working fine again after the reset, and I should've probably just left it at that. But I wanted to reformat the hard drive so I could just watch films and tv shows straight off that onto my xbox. So... I copied the files over temporarily to my laptop while I reformatted it. Changed all the hard drive, then as I was trying to send the files back again it crashed, and now it crashes every time I try to transfer files to anything, whether it be to the hard drive, to a normal usb stick or even just moving from one folder to another. So now my files are stuck on my laptop.

I've looked around a bit on google but there's so many contradicting and also outdated answers. Any help would be great, remember I'm a technodunce and have no idea what most the jargon means so babytalk please.

Thanks to anyone who has a clue on how I can fix this.

If you have your Windows disc, can you do a "repair install," where it reinstalls Windows without deleting your files

Or if that doesn't work, you could try to install Linux on a USB stick or something and boot your computer with that, then try to copy all the files to an external hard drive using the Linux OS and then you could do a "full reformat" and reinstall Windows and stuff after. http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/03...your-computer/

Sounds to me like the hard drive has some failures in it, probably just from age. Sometimes people forget that they are platters, and much like CD's can be easily damaged.

The fact it freezes specifically when you try to transfer files is what leads me to think that. Depending on your laptop, you should be able to remove the HD pretty easily. You could get an external with an operating system on it and boot from the drive, see what happens.

Linux is a great OS, if you can find one that is tweaked to your liking. If you are a technodunce, it may not be the best choice for you.

Yeah, the more I read up on it, the more it seems that my hard drive is knackered. Can that only be replaced, and not repared? Would it mean losing all my current files?

I had a look at the linux thing and it just confused me more than anythingelse

It can't really be repaired. Each "platter" or disc is made of some metal. Whenever you access files, there is a pin that touches the specific part of the disc to retrieve the file, kinda like a vinyl record player. If a platter is damaged, there is generally a scratch or large dent in it, which cannot be recovered.

For future reference, solid state drives (or SSD's) are much more durable, faster and last longer. Albeit, they are a bit more expensive, but worth it in the long run

Hope that helps.

You should try one of those "data recovery" apps also, that are meant to recover your files from "corrupt" drives (in case it's a software problem and not a hardware problem). I had some weird similar problems on my computer and used this "DiskWarrior" app (Mac only though) and was able to get everything back perfectly. I dunno what the best Windows one would be, but this one seems free I guess, based on a quick Google search: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Main_Page

Is there a chance the specific files might have just become "corrupt" or something during the several transfers? It only seems to be crashing on the same files every time. I just started moving the files one by one over to the external hard drive to see if that would work.

So for example, I was just moving Arrested Development season 1 over, but episode 6 kept crashing. I managed to get the other files over individually, but ep 6 would crash every time. I haven't tried moving a large folder, like the whole of season 1 (minus ep 6) over, but could that be the case at all? Like if just a few of those files have become damaged or something? I dunno.

Yeah, definitely could be. There are "file copying" programs also that are able to move corrupt files even if Windows isn't able, and you still might be able to play (at least some of) it if it's a video. I dunno which program to recommend specifically though, I would just be searching Google the same as you.

it could just be the individual files if they are in the same clusters. Once a HD starts to fail, the entire disk failure is imminent. Even if it were only a section, I would definitely go ahead and get some new storage.
