TPWW Movie of the Day 6-19-04

The Jerk (1979)

Starring: Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Catlin Adams, Mabel King

Plot Summary: Navin is an idiot. Hew grew up in Mississippi as adopted son of a black family. But at his 18th birthday he feels he wants to discover the rest of the world and sets out to St. Louis... Everyone exploits his naivety, but then a simple invention brings him a fortune.

Up there with Naked Gun as funniest movies ever.

My Rating: 9/10

Meh. I didn't find it that funny, but then again, I don't think Steve Martin is funny at all.

Steve Martin stopped being funny around 1990. He is GREAT in this movie though. No one else could have done it the same. I've seen this movie about 5 times now and still laugh out loud.

The whole thing with the sniper especially was hilarious.

Sniper: Die, you random son of a bitch.

[Sniper keeps missing Navin and hitting cans of motor oil]
Navin: He hates these cans! Stay away from the cans!

I saw that, he wanted to get a clam shaped bath tub, after he invented the eye glasses holder thing. Also, I was really sick the first time I saw it, and now whenever I see that movie or Steve Martin, I want to throw up.
