How he got his start in WWF: 'I was doing a wrestling radio show in Long Island, NewYork which I was Funding with my own money. I started running out of money. I wrote a letter to Linda McMahon, knowing if I wrote to Vince he probably wouldn’t answer it. I wrote a letter to Linda McMahon introducing myself, telling her what I was doing and saying I’d love an opportunity in the World Wrestling Federation at that time."
WWF being stuck in same rut as 1995: "Here we are, twenty years later almost and in my opinion the wrestling business is at the same exact spot. In my opinion at that time WWE was about ten years behind with what was going on in society at that time. I feel here we are in 2012, and I feel that the wrestling industry is at the same exact place, I think time has passed them by. They’ve become irrelevant. There’s nobody willing to make the changes that need to be made to bring the product up to speed." What led to Vince going with the Attitude idea and pushing the envelope: "I remember it was a Raw where it was being simulcasted they were shooting in the States and overseas. The rating came in the next day and it was rock bottom, it was maybe a 2.1, I mean it was really really bad. I went into work the next day and literally as soon as I sat down at my desk, Vince’s assistant called me that he wanted to see me. I went up to Vince’s office, he had all his key people in the room. He had the Raw magazine in his hand. I was worried, I was ready to be fired. He took that Raw magazine and slammed it down on the desk and said “this is what the show need to be” I was absolutely shocked. I thought it was going the other way. I had no dream that it was going to go that way." Was the original plan for WrestleMania XV to be triple threat Austin/Rock/Foley: "Absolutely. That’s the way it was booked but someone who wasn’t involved had a very different opinion about it and they kinda got in Vince’s ear and Austin’s ear and next thing I know Mick was out the picture, I wasn’t happy about it, I thought Mick deserved it, but you do what the boss tells you so we made the change. Just to clarify, was it Shawn Michaels that was in Austin and Vince’s ear: "Could have been..." Did Ferrara’s Oklahoma gimmick go too far? Absolutely. There’s no question about it. But that’s where it was at the time. I look at that now and I think ‘how could you do that?’ Thankfully I’ve had probably 3 or 4 conversations with JR since, I was able to apologize and get it all off my chest. Being 51, looking back at that now, yeah it was wrong." Seeing title belts as props: "The first time I saw wrestling, it was clear to me it was entertainment. I knew it wasn’t real. The characters were great, over the top. The storylines were straight out of soapopera digest. To me, it was entertainment and that’s why it always was. You have this title belt, it’s not real, these matches aren’t real, nobody is winning this belt. We’re writing it that way. So you use that belt as part of the entertainment. I feel that way to this day. When I saw Capt. Lou Albano and the Valiants, I got it, I understood what it was. That was always my philosophy." Why have TNA struggles to create their own brand name stars? "Because I think there’s a lack of patience. Ratings don’t happen overnight. Ratings happen when you commit to something and you stay the course. That’s why the attitude era worked. Vince stuck with it, we didn’t let the rating affect us on a weekly basis, we rode it out. Unfortunately, that was never the mindset at TNA. There was a lot of emphasis on the rating week to week, then creative is being directed to jump all over the place. It might take a year, but if you stay with it and believe in it, it’s going to work. It’s not going to work if every six weeks or two months you’re changing course and going in a different direction. I feel TNA have been guilty of that for a very long time." Russo, Bischoff and Hogan in TNA together – Why didn’t it work? "It’s simple, you can’t have these three strong personalities in opinions working together, you can’t. I worked very peacefully with Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff. In working together like that, everyone really trying hard to get along and wanting to get along, what each person is doing, is compromising your ideas and beliefs so everyone gets along. In my opinion its not a good was to business. There needs to be one boss, laying out the direction. If it’s working great, if it’s not, get rid of him and bring the next guy in. I’m a firm believer in that. In my opinion all these cooks in the kitchen, trying to get along, you end up with a product that’s very vanilla." Was it the “too many cooks in the kitchen” that led you to leave TNA? "Yeah, it was. It was kinda like, OK it was, me, Eric and Hulk, that’s cool. Then you’re gonna bring in Bruce Prichard. It gets to a point where it’s too much. It gets to a point where I feel like I’m wasting your time and I’m wasting my time because I can’t be the real Vince Russo. You’re not getting what you paid for. Once another chef was added to that kitchen, I just took a step back, and for the good of the company somebody had to bow out and I decided it would be me." Anything he wanted to do in TNA that he couldn’t? "To be me. Not compromise myself. The only time in my career that I was successful was in the WWF. Vince McMahon gave me the ball and he let me run with it. There were no committees. There was no 6 other peoples opinions. He trusted me, he gave me the ball. That was the only time in my career that I was allowed to work that way. I know what kind of environment I need to be put in to be successful. Committees in the wrestling business, do not work. Someone need to show me a committee in the last 15 years that worked. You need to have a head writer, let him bring in his crew, if they run with it and it’s a pass great, if they fail, get rid of them. Anything else is going to be vanilla and is going to be a so-so product which is what you’re seeing now in the wrestling business and not just in TNA." Is the bad relationship with Jim Cornette due to different philosophies? "It definitely is. The relationship isn’t bad on both parts. I don’t have a problem in the world with him. I don’t bad mouth him, I never have. It lies with him, not with me. All it is, is different philosophies. I think for some reason Jim has taken it to the extreme. That’s his deal, that’s not mine." Quick Fire Thoughts Hulk Hogan – Legend. He is the guy. Ric Flair – I think of wrestling Sting – Out of those, I had the closest relationship with him, I think of gentleman. Dixie Carter – Confused Jim Cornette – Great wrestling mind Vince McMahon – The creator |

Funny thing is is thats what usually happens,,, people hate the truth so much when I shove the facts in their faces with how great Russo is that I am automatically labeled troll etc and banned when it just bothers them that their WRASSLIN MATCHES aint what the masses want to see on television,,,

In your opinion, what's the ONE storyline that changed professional wrestling forever? The Montreal Screwjob? Hogan as the 3rd man? Or is there more than one?
The Montreal screwjob wasn't a storyline--it was REAL. I'd have to say definitely the "Third Man". You have to give Hogan and Bischoff credit for that. When are you going to get me a job at the greatest wrestling organization in the world? Al--you can have my job after they take me away in a strait jacket. Will Sean Waltman and Scott Hall continue to feature on Impact in the upcoming weeks/months? If yes, then how prominent will their roles be? Or has not much been planned for them at the moment? That all depends on Scott and Sean. Have you noticed that every major successful angle in the history of professional wrestling has mirrored an occurring cultural or social trend? Do you think that approach might be the key to developing something new in TNA? It might be, Chris--but you also need the right players. It doesn't matter how good a story is--if you don't have the right people in the right parts. Vince will ur new book give us insight on ur visit to wwe in [2002]. Yes it will, Nigel--I tell the whole story in detail Just want to say thank you for years of great writing and just wondered if you will be coming over to England later this month withthe tna tour as I have meet n greet tickets for Manchester and I would be fantastic to meet you. Thanks again gary No, Gary--always working on the next show. who is better: tna or wwe If we had the resources that the WWE does--we would. In time . . . in time. Vince if there were 5 guys from WWE/ROH or any company (major or indy) you could get Hulk/Dixie to bring in to TNA, who would they be? Never saw a ROH show--don't know their talent. Randy Orton, Randy Orton, Randy Orton, Randy Orton and Randy Orton. Are they getting rid of the 6-sided ring? It looks that way. What is going to happen with Jeff Hardy now that he's been indited on drug charges stemming from his September arrest? Not really sure--it's really none of my business. He was great to work with though. How do you feel about bret the hitman hart, and what did you think about his book??? Love, Bret, Karl--love him. Didn't get the chance to read his book though. hey vince i am writitng a Fantasy Wrestling show WCW Smackdown got any ideas on my WCW invasion Storyline? Wish I had the time--am swamped with IMPACT these days. But, good luck!!! How will things be different than WCW this time? Right now TNA seems a lot like WCW of old. Don't get me wrong i am a huge WCW fan. But we know how that ended. What are the plans so to speak about making it different this time. Seems like the only difference is Dixie Carter at the moment. Monday's show was great by the way. Although i am a little worries that we might see "the wolfpac" back again. Purely from my vantage point Hall and Waltman have no business in ring. Thanks Vince I don't think it seems like WCW at all. Wrestling, is wrestling--there is only really one way to do it. AJ, Joe, Daniels, Morgan, Hernandez, Brit Invasion, Pope, Machine Guns--were any of those guys from WCW? Point well taken Vince. yes there is new and great talent in TNA right now, i did not mean to imply there wasn't. TNA actually has some of the best talent around. But with Sting, Stiener, Jarret, Hogan, Nash, Booker, the Dudleys, yourself, then announce team for the most part. The list goes on and on. I know i don't speak only for myself here. We as fans want TNA to continue to succeed and beat WWE. Just hoping it doesn't go over like the last time. Thank you also for the work you have done in the past and continue to do, and for the facebook answers. Michael--wrestling, is wrestling--whether it's WCW, WWE, or TNA. Not many ways to do it differently. It's like boxing--you can have many different federations--but it's still boxing. Vince--what exactly is Matt Conway`s role on your creative team? Also, where did you find him at? thanks, -=Ryan Junior member--Ed and I are teaching him the ropes--life long wrestling fan--young, hard working, understands the business and can put up with me. Matt is the future of TNA. Okay Vince here's my .02 cents, thanks for reading and LISTENING. When are we gonna see more wrestling on the show and LESS BAD ACTING!? When are the young guys gonna get their chance to shine? Why can't the old guard put them over with the fans instead of protecting their selfish best interests? Can't the LEGENDS belt be used for the old guard and the TNA belt for the youth? Jim--the younger guys have had the spotlight since July--I know because that's more, or less when I replaced Jeff. Just look at who your champions are--Eric Young, AJ, British Invasion. The younger guys have definitely been given the spotlight. And wrestling, or acting--that's just an opinion. Everybody wants something different--the key is to try and please as many peoiple as possible. hey vince how dose it feel to be working with bischoff and hogan again? Challenging--but rewarding. It makes me better. I've read conflicting reports on several websites about that Jeff Jarrett/Hogan segment from the Jan 4 Impact. Some sites say that everything went right, but some sites say that Jeff Jarrett was actually supposed to be a little more cocky in his delivery but he ended up playing to the fans' cheers, and that caused Hogan to be booed. Which story is right here? Let's just say--didn't go as "scripted". Someone you work with told me you are the best writer in the history of the business. Who do you think is the 2nd best? And do you consider yourself a booker? I hate the word "booker"--HATE IT!!! There is a big difference between a writer and a "booker". I'm a writer. Fast Eddie Ferrara is every bit the writer I am---and a lot smarter!!! Hey there vince, could you tell me what a typical day at the TNA workplace is like? It's really just a job like any other job--there's a boss--there are responsibilities--and you just do the best you can do. With all the added talent will there be a thursday & monday show? (separate "brands" except for champions). That has been discussed. Much of it depends on Spike. When you initially joined WCW (October'ish 1999?) who were some of the guys you saw a lot of potential in? All those guys on the 2nd tier at the time--Rey, Eddie, Dean, Benoit--all those guys had great, great talent. Do you have any regrets about the Attitude Era now that you've found Christ? Do any of the storylines you've written in the past go further than you would go today, and is TNA going in a more adult-oriented "Attitude Era" direction as opposed to WWE's PG rating in the coming Monday Night War? Not at all--it was those experiences that led to Christ finding me. I would certainly not do a lot of those things today. As far as TNA's style--we are on in prime time, with a prime time audience--we need to put out a product that that audience will be interested in. Mr. Russo man, love your work. Always have. I was drawn even more to you when I found out you got saved. I did too, at about the same time you did. Cant wait to meet you in Heaven. Anyways, heres my question. TNA founder is born-again, right? World Champion is born-again. Head writer is born-again. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE use your stage to glorify Christ. You have an opportunity to reach millions. If they reject it and turn away, thats beyond your control. Thats why its called faith. Have you tried to implement the Gospel into TNA? Joshua--I do every, single day I go to work. Glorifying God is always on my mind in everything I do. Remember--wrestling is good vs. evil and good always wins! dear vince, how do i get those greys out of my beard? haha j/k. i cant believe this, you are giving us an open platform to ask questions and i have blanked out. ok here's a generic question: what is your favourite wrestling storyline of all time? what is the best storyline you have ever written in your opinion? Rock joining the Corporation--I LOVE the greys in my beard!!! Hey Vince, can you tell us what happened with the Main Event Mafia? I feel like the angle just died on the vine. Was there a planned ending and it just didn't come to pass for one reason or another? Our taping schedule where we tape more then one show a day was getting difficult for some of the veterans. That forced us to back off the idea a bit. hey vince what advice would u have for someone or a tag team to break into the business with no promotions worth mentioning around where they live? Just keep working--never stop working--no matter how big, or small the venue. Hey Vince, what advice would you give a young man or woman whose life long dream is to one day be involved in the creative-writing aspect of the professional wrestling business? I would tell you not to pursue it--there just aren't enough opportunities. Vince, what were you thinking when you had Booker T win the strap at Bash at the Beach despite the fact he had lost to Kanyon an hour prior to winning the belt? Also, why wasn't Kanyon elevated following that? Wow--you remember a lot more then I do. In all honesty--I really don't remember much about that time--I seem to have mentally erased it from my memory. Not too many good things there to remember. Vince, just wanted to say i think my fav bit of yours was back in the WCW days and u went out in the pope mobile. Hope Bischoff, Hogan, and yourself can work together. Awesome show this past mon, minus the terrordome(get rid of it) and not sure how the debut of hardy went down, he is a top of the crop star and shoudnt be feuding with Homicide on his debut. There is always a reason behind all things. Things happen for a "reason". I think many wrestling fans lose sight of that. Austin or Rock? You can only choose one. Rock. follow-up: Also--just for the record--Stone Cold Steve Austin IS A TREMENDOUS performer. Rock, just has more range, in my opinion. May explain why he's now a major Hollywood actor. Hey Vince, big fan. With the speculation that TNA is getting rid of the Six Sided Ring, what in your opinion makes TNA completely unique? What is their brand? At the end of the day--we're wrestling. How can you really differentiate the two companies--we're both wrestling. Vince, I'm a pastor- just curious, how many backstage are of Christian faith or any other faith? Do people talk about it? Yes we do--it often comes up in conversation--especially with Jeff Jarrett, Sting, AJ and Terry Taylor. Vince, do you think a small studio show like the old 1980's WTBS Georgia Championship Wrestling on Saturday nights from 6:05 - 8:05 could work today? Never really thought about it--but probably--yes. Really enjoyed your blog. Love your passion and your observations! Look forward to many more blogs on a whole array of topics! My question is,Since you've been reunited with Bischoff and Hogan, can Goldberg be far behind? That would be up to Goldberg--I'd be cool with it. Hey Vince, any plans on you becoming an on air character? With all the heat you get, I think you inside the six sided ring ripping Dixie a new one would make for good television. Always ready, willing and able to do what I have to do. what was the story behind [Mr Wrestling III]? Adrian, I wasn't a big fan of the Mr. Wrestling III angle--that one was not my idea. Just did was I was told to do like a good soldier. Not every idea came, or comes from me--that one didn't. Peace, Vince. January 10, 2010 you dont get the credit you deserve for what you did for wwe and what you are doing at tna. Please dont let tna become just wcw revisted We have to stop with the TNA/WCW comparisions. It's 2 different companies at 2 different times. Vince, why did you decide to get into the ring during your time in WCW? For a while, you said you'd never appear on TV, and then you became part of the main New Blood storyline after the relaunch. Do you ever regret doing that? Mainly because of the pressure being put on me for rating. My attitude was--if they want ratings--then I'll do it myself. No regrets--I learned a lot from it. Hi Vince i would like your thoughts on some of the talent that have recently shown up in TNA, Hulk Hogans Wrestling Tour recently toured down under with a some of the bigger free agents being on that tour i was at the melbourne show and saw some extremely sloppy wrestling that night yet some of those stars have shown up at TNA do you think TNA would be better investing in some new younger talent and developing new guys like AJ, Joe and Daniels then bringing back old stars that were popular in the 90's We are developing so many new stars at once that I don't think we can add many more to that mix. It takes so much to get new talent "over", and right now we have our hands full. hi vince, ive been a huge fan of yours since the attitude era..why is it you and ed ferrara could write both raw and smackdown, and now it takes a schoolroom full of people who cant even write a second grade book? do you think anyone will say hey vince..(mcmahon) you need to step away from the business because its affecting the product,...thanks for your time vince! Only if they want to lose their job. Hey Vince, I'm really looking foward to reading your new book. Any chance you'll be doing any book tours? Also what storylines in 2009 were you most proud of? J I think we told a nice AJ/Sting story if you really looked for the details. The Abyss character did a lot of cool things as well. Whos the most difficult wrestling star you had to write for? Probably Goldberg. It was tough to write for him being that WCW had made him so one-dimensional before I got there. Thanks for the access vince. I stopped watching a few years ago but i keep track of whats going on in wrestling, kind of like stalking an old ex-girlfriend. I wish you well, but i am very concerned about the "Rehash" of older talent philosophy. if done fresh, i'm sure it could be a sucess, we all still mark for "Hey Yo...!" but keep the DQ, and countouts to a minimum, and i'll peek thru the window now and again to see whats happening. Always have to try new and different things. You just can't do the same thing week after week. It's very difficult to book 64 shows a year and in order to do that sometimes you need to pull out ALL the stops. Scale of 1-10 how creative is Glen Gilberti? Did he ever help you come up with any ideas in WCW or TNA worth mentioning? 8. Glen is extremely creative--I talk alot about him in my new book. Hey Vince, you're a New York guy: Jets or Giants? Giants. Could we ever see any of these in TNA anytime soon? Falls Count Anywhere Match, Bra & Panties Match, any new Titles(Hardcore Title)? I don't think you'll be seeing any bras and panties matches--I respect our Knockouts way to much. But you will see other creative matches. Any chance you could book a match that doesn't end in a stupid finish? They are called finisher moves Vince, use them! A DQ in a CAGE MATCH!!! Are you off your mind? Two roll-ups and in the Main Event we saw about 8 finishing moves! Come on Russo, surely you learned your lessons in WCW? Let the wrestlers wrestle and do... what they do best! You don't need screwy finishes or 12 finishing moves to make a match good! I guess you will never see a DQ in an MMA fight? Do you have any idea what it takes to book over 400 matches a year--trying to make each one fresh and different? Any? If you do many of you should apply for my job. Hey Vince. Forget about all that other stuff. When are you gonna plug your book properly? Your last one was an inspiration work of art, and I expect no less from this one. Are you going to do book signings? Perhaps in Chicago? (maybe do a little Oprah? :P) Cause i need a certain Vic Venom to sign it. - Mish This book is quite different--much, much more wrestling. Haven't discussed signings yet--really enjoy doing them though. As soon as I have some lined up I will let you know. Hey Vince, I am a huge fan. I was wondering if you could script a feud between any 2 wrestlers, who would they be and why? The "Big Cat" Ernie Ladd and The Rock. How graet would that be?!!! Did you happen to listen to Jim Cornette's funny rant on TNA? He makes some good points buts very funny to listen to. No, I don't enjoy being personally attacked. Throughout my entire career I have never said one negative word about Jim Cornette--not one. If he wants to be a Vince Russo and TNA hater--let him knock his socks off--but I'm not really interested in listening to that. hey vince do you think if shelton benjamin was let go by wwe he will be a good fit in TNA? Not really familiar with his work. Don't watch WWE much. hey Vince, Radz here, does it annoy you when the internet wrestling community just brand you "shock tv" not realising the intriciasies of a amazing storlyine like rock joining the corperation or nWo Silver and Black formation? also any chance of cutting down on the match length on impact and less womens wrestling please! Radz, everybody likes different things. That's why I said earlier--the key is to try to hit a chord with as many viewers as possible--be it wrestling, entertainment, etc. Also, the Knockouts draw the largest numbers every week. Hi Vince, the "brlillant idea" to bring back in TNA the old Bob the Bullett Armstrong was you or a Cornette's idea? Can't really remember. I will say that I love and respect the "Bullet". He's a great, great man. Hi again Vince,i would to know what about Eric Young and the World Elite? they still have space on TV? Absolutely. Eric Young is a great, great talent. Vince i'm thinking of getting in the wrestling industry and i just want to know what people do i have to hang with or talk to to get to the top? and is TNA going to have a magazine? It depends on what capacity you're talking about. TNA has been talking about a magazine. Vince, what is your opinion on the way WWE have treated Christian since his return from TNA? Do you think he is being held back or 'punished' because of his jump to TNA in 05? He really is such a great talent who should be a huge star in WWE right now. He is absolutely being punished in what I think is a very unfair way. Just another childish Vince McMahon game. Vince Russo...I love where the new TNA is going! You have a lot of great talent! Who do u think is the best? That's a very vauge question. We have so many years guys who have not really reached their potential yet--so it's tough to say. I will say, however, that the Pope stands out as a shining star. Kurt Angle. TNA Impact regularly gets a lot of stick from wrestling critics all over the internet. Do you think that this is because they actually dislike TNA/You/Hogan etc or because they strive so much for somebody to rival the WWE that anything that isn't a hit right of the bat gets a higher then usual amount of critisism? It's because they hate me and hate Hogan--and it's also because they want TNA to be a 2 hour wrestling show--with TWO HOURS of wrestling--that ain't gonna happen, so the haters will continue to hate. Vince, who pulled the briefcase away from Austin at King of the Ring 1999? I wish I could remember that far back. Not even sure what I ate for breakfast yesterday. How do you feel about TNA getting rid of the 6 sided ring? It makes me Ill. Not really in agreement with it--I think it makes TNA--TNA. robert roode is one guy who reminds me alot of HHH from 1999-2000,do u think he may get a push as a singles wrestler soon?also who do you think is the most under-used wrestler on the TNA roster? i think its amazing red I think Roode will one day be a tremendous singles star for TNA. Underrated? Eric Young. Vince do you have plans for val venis? or was that just a one time thing on monday? Sean Morley is on the TNA roster. Hey vince, i'm an avid fan of wrestling and love to watch TNA. The thing that I noticed is that it seems that the storylines seem to get mixed up a bit. ie: the mysterious attacker of A.J. Styles. Is this something that is out of your control or is just too little time for so many wrestlers? I like to play things out--you're not going to get your answers in a week. I've been waiting 5 years to get the answers to "Lost". That's just my style--always has been. If you don't pay attention you'll claim it doesn't make sense. Everything I write "makes sense"--you just have to pay attention to get it. AJ's attacker--by the way--gets paid off next week on Impact. Vince, do you see Bill Goldberg possibly coming to TNA? Why not? Hey Vince, huge fan. Just got done promoting the Jan 15 show in Reading,Pa.What are the chances of Sid,Kennedy, and Rvd coming in? Why do you think Vinny Mac doesn't see Tna as a threat, and continues to put on horrible shows every week? Thanks for all the hard work in making Tna the best wrestling company out there. Vince does recognize TNA--but his ego will never let him admit it. Sid, RVD and Kennedy would all be great TNA additions. January 11, 2010 Has there been an angle or a match that didn't live up to the expectations you had hoped for? Sure there have been, can't think of any specific. My memory is weak--I only retain information I need to know--and I'm not kidding. Let's say things don't work out in TNA with this oil & water Hogan/Bisch thing. Do you see yourself leaving the business for good, try to get back with WWE, or possibly working for ROH and indies? I think TNA will be my last stop in the wrestling business. Wrestling has given me 18 years, I never planned for that. But I honestly feel--this is the last ride. Have there been any talks in bringing in Tony Schaivone to TNA? He's always been my all time favorite commentator. Tony has no interest to get back into wrestling. Hey Vince, I read in a Booker T interview that he refused to lose to Matt Morgan. You helped make Booker T a star by making him WCW World Heavyweight Champion. How did you feel about the Booker T refusing to put over Morgan? Take care. It's just business. I still respect Booker--he's a great guy. Big Vince Russo mark here and I'll probably get heavily ribbed if I'm busted asking a question to my favorite writer but I am really looking for some clarification on something you wrote earlier today so it's worth it! Regarding your writing of various types of finishes, or non finishes, in matches you said: I guess you will never see a DQ in an MMA fight? Do you have any idea what it takes to book over 400 matches a year--trying to make each one fresh and different? But why does "each" finish need to be so different? I also see many MMA matches where the matches are similar, or at least the finish. Do you feel your audience cannot handle out of these 400 matches, 200 that go the distance with clean, or simple, finishes? Wouldn't that make the other 200 stand out more and take the strain off yourself? I would have to believe that well over 75% of the matches over the course of a year end in clean finishes. If not that many--well more then 50%. Would you ever wear socks with sandals? Sure. No doubt. That's what us old guys do. Hi Vince, huge fan of your work. i got two questions i would be honored for u to answer. 1. im going to college soon. and i was wondering how hard it is to be a writer for a show and what requirements must be need to be a writer? 2. Have you ever heard of a old 80s wrestling promotion called GLOW: gorgeous ladies of wrestling? To be a writer, you have to be willing to go where the action is--probably LA. I was a HUGE fan of GLOW--loved it! Hi Vince, I saw something you said in one of your answers and I just had to comment. You said: Everything I write "makes sense"--you just have to pay attention to get it. |

-4 POINTS FROM THE LEAD,,,,,, jr the man go #88,,, JUNIOR NATION IS HERE GOGOGO green flag,,,, ladys and gentleman start ur engines
Rick Hendrick broke the news to Steve Letarte at around 3 o'clock in the afternoon in late November of 2010. About 15 minutes after being told that he would henceforth be overseeing the No. 88 team of NASCAR's most popular driver, Letarte was in his car, on his way to Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s house. Even though they had worked under the same roof for three years to that point, the crew chief introduced himself as if they had never met. "We started with a blank sheet of paper," Letarte remembered. "We didn't take any preconceived notions of what Dale's strengths or weaknesses were. I personally didn't listen to anybody else's opinions on Dale. I learned a lot from Mr. Hendrick on how to deal with people and with relationships, and the most important thing is to create your own relationship firsthand. Dale and I did that." “ When you go to the shop and watch him kind of work, you can see how this team is as good as it is. ” -- DALE EARNARDT JR. _______________________ “ Not everyone could have gone up there and sat down with Dale and said, 'Look, this is the way it's going to be.' ” -- RICK HENDRICK And so began the relationship that would help transform Earnhardt, slowly at first, from the black sheep of a dominant Hendrick Motorsports franchise to arguably the organization's top championship contender this season. Make no mistake, it was Earnhardt's name attached to that epic 143-race winless streak, which saddled him for more than four years. It was Earnhardt's name on the trophy that ultimately snapped the skid this past Sunday at Michigan International Speedway. But the road to that moment began in late 2010, directly on the heels of a second consecutive rotten season for the No. 88 team, when Hendrick shuffled his personnel and paired Earnhardt with a crew chief who proved capable of turning everything around. Sunday was Earnhardt's moment and Earnhardt's triumph, clearly. But it was made possible in large part because of Letarte, who took plenty of grief as Jeff Gordon's crew chief during that near-miss championship season of 2007, who even a week earlier at Pocono had drawn some raised eyebrows with an unpopular but necessary call to pit for fuel in the waning laps. For crew chiefs, that kind of second-guessing comes with waking up in the morning. None of that changes the indisputable fact that Letarte has been perhaps the singular catalyst in the rebuilding of both a program and a driver, that he instilled confidence, belief and professionalism within Earnhardt from almost the moment of his arrival, that over time he built cars capable of dominating a race just like they did at Michigan. "He's hard to compliment, because he doesn't take it very well. But him and that team, they can have all the credit -- my engineers and Steve sit in that lounge every weekend and make the car go. You know, they make it turn. They make it whatever I want it to do. If I ask them, you know, this is my problem and this is where we are hurting, they get together and they fix it," Earnhardt said after the drought-buster in the Irish Hills. "I just trust that he's looking out for, not for the best interests of just me. He looks out for the entire team and puts great people around himself to be able to do the job right. We have a good group. ... When you go to the shop and watch him kind of work, you can see how this team is as good as it is just by being in the shop and watching him sort of dictate and move pieces around like on a chessboard. He's really sharp." Letarte brought with him so many things Earnhardt needed. The cars have been solid from almost day one, turning a variable into a constant, even if it took until Sunday to burst through the dam. He came in with a reputation for being able to keep his driver focused and upbeat in the car, able to head off episodes like the one Earnhardt suffered at New Hampshire in 2008, when he nearly melted down over a set of poorly matched tires and required Hendrick to come over the radio to talk him off the ledge. At the same time, Letarte began to demand things of Earnhardt that no other crew chief ever had. Fill out post-race reports. Attend meetings. Be ready to get to the track early, and stay there late. That's the way the great Ray Evernham did it at Hendrick, the way Letarte and colleague Chad Knaus learned it. For all the support he offers over the radio, Letarte has a stern side to him, too. "Stevie, he can be extremely funny, and in a nanosecond he's very serious," Hendrick said. Earnhardt needed a little of a taskmaster; his first crew chief at Hendrick, Tony Eury Jr., was also his cousin, and it was difficult for the two to see each other as anything else. Earnhardt never really responded to Eury's successor, Lance McGrew. Enter Letarte, who brought with him a track record of winning races a certain way. Earnhardt bought into it. "This is how this building has always operated," Letarte said, referring to the Hendrick organization. "It operated that way when Ray was here. I think Chad and I learned a lot from him, how he ran his race team. There are expectations set forth for every employee whether you're the tire man, engineer, engine man or the driver. The driver isn't a subcontractor, he's a team member. When you become a team member of the 88, you're expected to carry your end of the ship. That is not only the hard work you put in, but there's certain expectations and certain things needed. For the engineers to do their jobs as needed, certain times be available, certain expectations to come post race. I can't say enough about it. I think those expectations were laid out. They've been met 110 percent." "Not everyone could have gone up there and sat down with Dale and said, 'Look, this is the way it's going to be, this is the way you have to show up,' " Hendrick added. "Stevie has a unique way of putting his arm around him and saying, 'Look, Bubba, we're in this together. Together we're going to do this. This is what I'm going to do, this is what I need you to do.' Dale felt comfortable and trusted Stevie. I don't think Stevie gets near the credit he deserves for getting Dale to feel all the things that Dale has to feel to be successful and be comfortable with the guys. To go from doubting what he had to feeling like he has the best in the garage, that's a tremendous job. I think it's probably the hardest job out there. So I just don't think Stevie gets near enough credit for what he's accomplished." It was all made through much more than just meetings and tough love, though. Hendrick said Letarte worked hard to create a bond with Earnhardt, who doesn't let everyone in. The two traveled to test sessions together, flew to Las Vegas together to pick up Earnhardt's Most Popular Driver award a week after they were paired up. They took a methodical approach, one of improvement by degrees rather than leaps and bounds, and they became frustrated at times when they wanted it to happen more quickly than it did. But eventually it did happen, and now Earnhardt has a victory and is second in the championship standings, thanks in large part to a crew chief who figured out how to make NASCAR's most popular driver a winner once again. "We use that word a lot, 'trust.' But Dale does not trust everybody," Hendrick said. "He doesn't think sometimes that he's taken in the right light. You see that more when his confidence isn't there. But when his confidence is switched on, I mean, he's convinced and he knows he's got the best in the garage. He believes that. He believes he's got the best crew chief and the best team. He believes this is what he's needed. Chemistry is so important. Sometimes, you never hit the right combination. But, man, I look back and I think we're very fortunate. Didn't have any idea it was going to be this good. But I think that the chemistry between these two guys, and I've been doing this for 30 years, is as good as or better than any I've ever seen." |
