"router" help...i don't even know if this thing is a router :-\
Yeah getting pretty sick of this junk...We have 2 comptuer in my house. I used to have a regular router, store bought like 100 bucks. A pretty popular brand just plug the 3 cords in there and it worked. But it broke, so we have been switching the internet back and forth between the computers which is a pain in the ass aswell as a total waste. Now my step dad got some "router" from the school he works at. I cannot figure it out. After reading about it online I am even more clueless. I tried hooking up the modemn and the 2 other computers into but it would knock one computer off the internet when another one turned on.
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products...ic/EN104TP.asp That is the exact model I have..its probably not even the right equipment I need. I don't want a network or anyhting like, or info going from this computer to the other one, I just need to bascially spilt the cable modem so I can online on 2 different computers at the sametime. |

that won't split the net for you. That's a hub. The big difference between a hub and a router is that a router is usually DHCP enabled. What that means at the easiest level is that a router can configure interal IP's like 192.168.100.1 and so forth for each computer and give it the ability to act as if it was directly connected to the cable modem which uses an external ip like 66.11.23.168 to connect to web sites and such.
For what you want to do, you'll probably need to put out the cash for a router. There's ways around it, like "internet connection sharing" in windows 2000, and the client -server model, but all of that is kinda difficult compared to buying a router which i'm pretty sure now days is like 40 - 50 at wal mart |

Yeah, I figured it wasn't a router. I dont know, I'll talk to my step dad, he might be able to pick up something. If not I guess I'll have to buy one

Sounds like a hub, or an old 'A'/'B' switcher. I only mention switcher because you said your step dad got it from school. schools tend to be cheap that way. LOL ooopps looked at the link, 'tis a hub.

Nah I have a hub and it splits my internet between like 5 different computers just fine.
The only thing is you would need an extra ethernet card in the "host" computer or whatever. Would be cheaper than buying a router probably, but yeah, more work. |

router is better though, as you'll get the benifit of a hardware firewall, which if you're running XP is pretty important.
