View Full Version : Tag Teams

With all of the talent that WWE has amassed again and being in the process of making cuts to trim the excess off, there’s the possibility that WWE could become serious with their tag team division and decide to make it what it was at the turn of the millennium. What teams would you like to see? What teams would you make? What teams would you keep the same?
Goldust & Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin calls himself the Gold Standard, so Goldust convinces him to live up to the moniker.

0% chance the WWE does this. These random hodge-podge shit teams they have amassed in today's WWE are low on chemistry with each other and even lower on heat with other teams.
The two heights on tag team that have occurred since i have watched wrestling were in 1999-2001 and late 2002-2004. In the former, the division was headlined by solid teams, with the most visible being The Hardy Boyz, The Dudley Boyz, and Edge and Christian. There were also other teams on the periphery that could challenge any of the above for the titles, such as the Superheavyweights, The New Age Outlaws, Too Cool, The APA, and of course high card combos that were occasionally thrown in like The Rock and The Undertaker and the Rock and Sock Connection. This was a time when there was heavy competition for the tag belts, and I felt like they actually MEANT something. On top of this, it felt like there was legitimate hate between the top groups feuding for the belts, taking feuds to even higher levels.
The other period I mentioned was when Stephanie McMahon was Smackdown GM and made a move to put emphasis on the tag titles. This led to one of the greatest three month periods in tag team wrestling I can remember. The three top teams were Eddie and Chavo Guerrero, Edge and Rey Mysterio, and Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. For me it didn't get much better than that.
The biggest obstacle I think they would face in becoming serious about the tag division in the WWE today is making the titles matter. They have been wiping their assed with them for four years, and you can't just undo that. Getting serious about the tag division would require commitment and development and i can't see them doing it.

I wanna see Wade Barrett and Sheamus for some reason, with Regal as their manager. Think it would be awesome.

The way that the WWE has been handling the tag straps since Jerishow has built them back up to a large degree, considering that at least one former WWE champion has been holding them for the better part of a year.
The thing is though, the WWE doesn't seem to really care about the division per-say, and are using the belts more to either get the most out of their talent appearance wise (Jericho), give DX the rub of being tag champs, or putting more gold on Miz. There's really only been two well marketed tag feuds (DX vs. Legacy and Jerishow), which shows how much they're really focusing on building the division.
The divison itself has been populated largely by main eventers or thereabouts, and thrown together teams would just seem so below what the tag straps are. And I seriously doubt the 'E would devote TV time to putting over these new teams.

Carlito and Michael Tarver could go a fair way as a tag team. There is something about them that is so different, but allows them to blend together, in my opinion. The same could go for Matt Hardy & Justin Gabriel. And now that they have distinctly different personalities, bring up Curt Hawkins to RAW and stick him back with Zack Ryder. With Rosa Mendes as a valet, I think they could actually become a pretty well-remembered tag team.

Carlito and Chris Masters as face as a Tag Team would be pretty sweet if they used both of these guys to their full potential and even bring back Carlito's show.

How else are they suppose to get new teams. I suppose you could bring in guys that no one knows and put them together but then you have to build them up to be credible.

This is a good idea, too bad the WWE won't do it. It would be cool to have more competition for the belts.

Have a team attack a pair having a feud right now (Batista/Cena, Jericho/Edge, Undertaker/HBK). It might take steam away from Wrestlemania, but it will add steam to the tag team.
This might be good if there are unresolved issues from Wrestlemania and the team starts their attacks in the Backlash time period. But currently, it doesn't look like WWE will do it. They fucked up Sheamus pretty bad and will probably hedge their bets for a lot of future stars... barring NXT.

Weren't the WWE looking at The Briscoe Brothers recently? They seem like a much more natural fit for TNA, but if the WWE wanted to get serious about tag team wrestling, they would make a fantastic centrepiece for the division.

I would like to see HHH and Shamus Tag. I don't know why, just think that heel duo would kick a lot of arse.
I would love to see some great tag teams again. I want tag team rivalries, and finishers dammit.

I'd like ALL tag teams to be able to compete on any show.

Why are they still carrying atround 2 pairs of belts? They never defend only one pair of belts, so why have they not made a new pair of belts already? I mean it's been how long since they were unified?

To reform the division, you need feuds between tag teams who aren’t fighting over the belts. It’s really that simple. Look back at the WrestleManias from years gone by. WrestleMania VI had 3 matches between teams.

After The Undertaker returns from break, he and Kane could rekindle the Brothers of Destruction going into the fall.

Doubtful...if they got back together they'd almost have to put the straps on them, and 'Taker won't work that kind of schedule.
Plus, you'll make more money in singles feuds w/ Taker than diluting him in tag action.

Give Lance Hoyt, Zack Ryder, and Rosa Mendes a Jersey Shore gimmick. Ryder could come up with a new finisher called the Fist Pump. His gimmick predates the show, but it’s pretty close already. Hoyt is really the one who would change a bit, but he’d still be intense, and Rosa would get annoying and wear the Snooky hairdo.

How do you figure they'd "almost have to" give Kane and 'Taker the belts? Just because they've got established history as the Brothers of Destruction doesn't mean a damn thing, with all due respect. Also, as of late, 'Taker had been working a pretty steady schedule as he was recently World Heavyweight Champion, so I wouldn't be so sure 'Taker wouldn't be open to a lengthy run with the tag belts if he and Kane ever won them. I think he'd be more than willing and able to make at least a 6-month or so long run with the belts with Kane in the unlikely event it ever happened.

That much is true.

I think if they really did a legit reunion of the BoD (not the once-off kind of thing they did on Smackdown), then the 'E would eventually have to book the belts onto them. They could work a feud for a few months away from the straps (see: DX and Legacy), but it would be unrealistic for such an established and dominant team to not go after the top tag prize in the company at some point if you're really keeping them together.
As for the schedule, yes he was the champion, but how often did you see him wrestle outside of PPVs? How many weeks did a Smackdown go by where he only made a quick 2 minute appearance at the end of the show, or wasn't even on it? With the unified tag straps you have to make some semblance of a showing on both Raw and SD every once in awhile, and probably wrestle...which is more than 'Taker certainly has been doing. Now, one thing which I'll agree with you on is that it'll limit Taker's ring time when he's in a match...you can have Kane do more of the heavy lifting, which could help with Taker's banged up lower half.
In short, I'm not saying it can't happen, and I understand what you're saying and all...I just can't see it. Agree to disagree.

Call me a mark, but I just want to see tag teams that were well thought out and had some kind of uniformity and connection in their back story: Road Warriors, Hart Foundation, Wild Samoans, Bush Wackers, Money Inc, British Bulldogs, Demolition, Dudleyz, etc... I hated Jerishow with a passion. It was just random as hell.

I still think a lot of the WWE NXT guys would benefit a lot from working the tag ranks for a while. Evan Bourne & Justin Gabriel would make a tremendous tag team, in my opinion. Especially considering Evan Bourne isn't really doing too much. Call them "The Air Angels," or something like that.
Carlito could bring up Alberto Banderas as a bodyguard type, and you could pair him with Michael Tarver, who could stay aligned with Carlito post-NXT. Tarver has the boxer gimmick, and Banderas has done MMA. So they'd have a "fighter" gimmick, obviously. Primo isn't going too far by himself, so bring in Orlando Colon to team with Primo, and do another Colons pairing.
Shawn Michaels & Daniel Bryan could form a "teacher/student" tag team for a while.

The teacher/student with HBK and Danielson would be a good way to help get Danielson over
