View Full Version : Triple H on the undercard

For the first time in what seems like forever, The Game has been completely bumped out of the main event picture. A lot of people are happy about this because they simply are sick of Triple H and want him out of the picture, but I am happy for a different reason. It finally gives him a chance to be a wrestler. Triple H did a lot of his best work ring wise on the undercard, and I'm interested to see if he can rekindle that greatness. There's no doubt that The Game is one of the greatest gimmicks of all time, but it needs a little bit of retooling. Now that HHH is out of the spotlight, perhaps he can do that.

Thoughts? Opinions? Critiques? I await with much anticipation.

If he actually is going to be working with Sheamus, I don't know how great that will be.

To the Contrary ABT, I think that could be absolutely great. We know he won't JOB to Ginger, but they could work a good strong match. I am happy to see the Game doing something different.

I'd rather him work with somebody like Jack Swagger.

I don't miss 20 minute promos from Triple H...competent but, not very entertaining. His best mic work, in my opinion, was/is as a face.

That being said, I'd definitely enjoy seeing him come back into the main event scene as he is still one of the best things going.

I think he's lost a few steps. He still has the ability to put on great matches, and he still is one of the best workers in the business, even at his age and after his injuries.

I don't think he's going to approach being anywhere near his prime in 98-2001 though.

I would like to see him reinvent his gimmick again.

Also, he has worked undercard fueds a few times before in the past few years. He's been out of the main event before, but his popularity stays at that level and he'll be back up soon.
I don't think him being in the undercard for this Wrestlemania means it's going to mark any kind of trend.

A big knock on him in my opinion was the cheesiness of the latest DX stuff. Now that we're past that for a while (seemingly), I think he could get "back to form" somewhat.

I mean honestly, we all may not like Triple H for whatever our reasons may be, but you can't deny that he's one of the best at what he does. The man goes out, puts on a good match 99.9% of the time, and can carry just about anyone to a decent match. Do I think HHH/Sheamus will be a great match at WM? Not entirely, but HHH will do his damndest to make it as good as he can. Keep in mind that Sheamus will be making his WM debut, and I could seriously see him getting the rub here. I think HHH having to carry Sheamus a bit in that much will prove to be a chore, but those 2 will put on a good showing IMO.

I believe it was after his second return in late 2007 that he did a lot of what is being suggested here.

He was in the best shape he's been in years, and instead of going into the main event he worked the undercard for a few months and put on some great matches.

This was when he fueded with Umaga, and had the whole tag team/rivalry with Jeff Hardy. They had a great undercard match at Armageddon of that year.

Ramm, please explain to me why Triple H sucks. I am imploring you to give one valid reason as to why Triple H 'sucks'.

In my opinion:

Triple H as a worker isn't terrible, he can have some great matches with the right people. However, here's why I don't like him.

- Obviously being the bosses son-in-law has some advantages. The fact that for the last ten years he's not been in any mid-card/low-profile rivalries. He's fueds always get proper care and attention. And until now, he's been in every world title match at Wrestlemania since 18 (except 23, due to injury).

- He alwaus uses the same moves. When was the last time he broke out a new move which isn't a Spinebuster, Flying Knee or Suplex?

- His gimmick/attire hasn't changed, and to be honest is just kinda 'I'm a bland guy who wants my title back'.

- His promos suck. The DX reunion in 2006 was pretty cool but it all got old really fast.

He was great until his original injury. When he returned I was excited and everything (back in 2002), but since his reign of terror or whatever people call it I can't stand watching him.

Plus the guy talks loadsa shit apparently in interviews claiming that young guys aren't willing to step up etc, which is easy for him since he always gets the good fueds and burying people etc. I'm sure people like Carlito would be more willing to 'step up' if they actually stood a chance of steeling the spotlight, but it'll never happen.

Hope this helps.

I do find it quite bizarre he's suddenly been thrown out of the main event scene, bit weird to get used to after all this time! I'll be more interested in what he does now as a result though, i'm one of those who prefer him as a heel. Not sure how he could reinvent his gimmick exactly, i'lld just love it if he regained the type of attitude he used to have back in 99/2000 etc. Also get tired of him using the same moveset over and over and over and over and over again, doesn't need a complete change just a few new moves every now and then would help.

With mania, you can only have so many big stars working the big matches, Triple H just isn't in a big program with anyone right now. This reminds me of how Stone Cold got kind of lost in the shuffle in the mid-card match with Scott Hall at Wrestlemania X-8. Basically the same thing, though I don't expect HHH to wine and cry like a little baby and no-call/no-show RAW the next day like Austin did.

During the McMahon-Helmsley Era, I was like 12-13 and had just started watching wrestling a few months prior. I genuinely hate Triple H. Later in life, understanding the wrestling business quite a bit more, I developed a great appreciation for the incredible job Trips did as a heel in that stretch of time. I also have to say that for the 10 years or so I've watched, he's been one of the most dedicated and consistent performers in the ring I've ever seen.

There were lows of course (2002 post WM18 may have been one of my least favorite of his periods, a time when his PPV main event runs included blow out wins over RVD an Kane), but when I think back to some of my favorite feuds and matches, I find that a fair amount of them include Triple H.

i see Sheamus going over HHH at Wrestlemania if they do have a match. But yes HHH needs to be relevant for some type of belt i think. Unless the feud he might be involved in is built up well and has legs to it.

H's fueds always get decent enough build. I think him being on the undercard could be a great thing for guys like Sheamus, DiBiase, Rhodes, and other young/mid card guys that are being looked at to get over.

Infact, after Mania and Legacy is done "exploding", I can def. see a program with Triple H and Ted Jr. running for a couple months. H can help make the kid look like a star as he transitions to full time single competition.

Triple H's work was better when he was in the undercard because it was before his major quadricep injury. He has not ever been as good in the ring since, just as Austin was never as good after Owen broke his neck, and HBK hasn't been as good since he broke his back.

Kurt Angle, on the other hand, is still the fucking man, despite a broken freaking neck.

I don't think the guy deserved the spot he was in. He has no personality and the crowd did not care for him at all. Mostly silence when he was out there. Plus it made it seem like him retiring Jamie Noble was a big deal.

To be fair, you're exaggerating quite a bit. There have been plenty of times that he's gotten the heel crowd reactions that he's been looking for. The main thing that held back his reign of champion is that not only did they not give him enough build before they handed him the belt but they didn't give him dominant victories over top competition like they should have done. He should've beaten Cena cleanly in their rematch, seeing as Cena had nothing really to lose.

I think it's cool he's going down the card a little, it's not lie it can harm him much. He's The Game for god's sake, he's been booked so strong for so long nothing can make him look weak. He could make some guys look real strong.

I have a strange mix of feeling towards HHH, He's been one of my favourite wrestlers at points (particulary 99/00 and his huge face return) and was my least favourite as well (2003, don't get me started). Now he's just sort of an institution and I can usually rely on him to have a good match.

I don't even hate Sheamus personally, but there still hasn't been a match he's been in where I've sat back and said 'damn, that was a good match'.

Jack Swagger on the other hand has had good matches with Matt Hardy, Christian, and John Cena at very least. I also think he has quite a bit more personality than Sheamus.

He acts like he has more personality, but that doesn't do it for me. He comes off as if he's forcing it so much to me. It's just really awkward and doesn't fit.
