Like, in UFC, can people only fight in their weight groups? I wanna see BJ Penn take on Frank Mir for some reason. Or Brock Lesnar.

Nah it doesn't happen in America anymore. They still do it in Japan. For Frank Mir and BJ Penn to fight they'd have to be in the same weight class. For instance BJ would have to gain weight to get to heavyweight or Frank Mir would have to cut... his legs off... and get to 155.
BJ however would gain weight for such a fight but he'd be so out of shape that Mir would be stunned being in a fight with someone that has worse cardio than himself.

Thanks for the reply. That kinda sucks though. There's a lot of potentially good fights that could come out of mixed-weight-class matches. :(

Some fights could be feasible, the guys would just have to meet at a weight class in the middle. I doubt you'll ever see any of the heavyweights in that scenario though.

Yeah, happens all the time in Japan. The only fight that Machida ever lost a round in, prior to getting raped by Shogun, was against BJ Penn. Just check youtube for old Pride open weight tourney vids. There should be tons. Dream does it too I think.

lol just remembered Franklinweight. How is that guy supposed to get anywhere fighting at 195 all the time?

Yeah, Rich is forever a gatekeeper fighter now. Like, not even a gatekeeper to a title, just for fighters on the bubble.

Sucks, but what can you do with Silva at 185 and Shogun at 205?
Impact!

Nah he's gonna be a contender. Think about it:
-Debuts at Light Heavy Weight
-Drops to Middle Weight and wins Title
-Moves to Franklinweight and wins Title
-Returns to LHW
-Profit?

it was cool back in the day when there wasn't a general concensus as to what the best styles for mma were, but now people would just get absolutely slaughtered. still kind of amazes me some heavyweight fights are between people who are 265 and 220-230.

that will change

I believe it, but not as long as the heavyweight picture continues to look like it does. I see 2 even more lopsided divisions forming out of the remains of an already lopsided division.

when more and more really good athletes come in cutting to get to 265 and they dominate the class, then i think they will bump up the limit and add a class between. However, Cain could be a guy that would fuck everything up in terms of that because he is a lot smaller and has a great chance of beating those big guys.

They'll add a Super Heavyweight class or something

Outside of a small group of freak athletes (including Lesnar), guys bigger than 265 tend to be slower, less talented and more likely to gas. That's boring, so it'll never happen.

They might bump the class up to 285 but thats still pushing it

lol, that just means that once Lesnar is back at 100%, he won't have to cut weight anymore. If by some miracle Mir makes it to Lesnar, that would be the raping of a lifetime.

I highly doubt the weight cut affects lesnar at all

Probably just his cardio a little. 20 pounds can be a right bitch to lose.

He trains and eats to keep his weight up because it comes down so easily when he trains
