View Full Version : Rey Mysterio

So I'm watching Smackdown and I've come to a strange conclusion: In every feud Mysterio has been in over the last eight months or so, I have liked his opponent better than him in almost every situation.

Now let me say that I don't hate Rey, and I don't even "not like" him. I'm fine with him; in fact, I think he rarely puts on an un-entertaining match. But here are the most recent people he's feuded with: Leather jacket wearing heel Batista, John Morrison, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, and now CM Punk. He has played the face in all of those feuds, but frankly I've been more interested in his opponent in every case.

Now despite saying this, I realize that a million little kids in the audience love the hell out of him and they let him know it during every match. But I can't help but ask: is Mysterio being booked wrong, is he being overshadowed by far more interesting and developed adversaries, or has he simply had the same exact character for so long that it's finally becoming stale?

Or maybe it's just me.

Not really...he's being booked against well developed heels and the Undertaker (who is just a phenomenal character), and for the marks in the audience, thats just fine.

You have to remember that most people in the audience don't care how developed or multifaceted the heel is, if he's doing dastardly things, then he's going to get boo-ed. And since you have such well booked bad guys doing bad things to Rey, he's going to get major face pops, especially playing the underdog. So I'd go as far as to say he's being booked well.

Now, thats not to say im particularly interested in Rey myself, and I do give much more of a shit about his opponents too...I just know that I'm not rooting along heel/face lines, which puts me in the stark minority.

Actually here in the IWC youre one of many case in point we LOVE CM Punk in fact many here have gone SxE just cause of him ;)

But I digress I think for me a big chunk of my dislike is that hes been booked in in a lot of david vs goliath matches as opposed to average sized wrestlers.

Haha, I meant being in the minority in respect to the vast majority of WWE's audience, aka marks. For the record, I <3 Punk.

Rey Mysterio vs Cody Rhodes that'd be a good run. 2 underdeveloped wrestlers in their own right, about the same size. Give Rey Rey someone who's the same size and can wrestle and run with it for a few months. Leave the crap storylines like mask match, or gruesome attacks off... Noone cares for that as we see it on Raw every week.

Heels are usually more interesting than faces, imo.

I think it's because Rey plays such a simple, one-dimension, goody two-shoes character that it's hard to really buy into him. It's a lot like John Cena. The talent itself is not bad -- just often the way it is presented.

I hate how false looking the set up for the 619 is.... It's near enough the only situation where somebody falls into the ropes like that.

Setups for moves like that have been used in wrestling for YEARS. It's really not that bog of a deal imo

It's no different then when Shawn Michaels body slams a guy in the perfect spot in the ring to go up for the elbow drop.

Thinking about it, running the ropes is the most unnatural thing.....

This has bugged me since the first time I ever saw wrestling.
