April 13, 2004 - IGNcube today learned that Canada-based development studio Silicon Knights has ended its second-party status with Nintendo Co. Ltd. The company will effective immediately be allowed to develop software for multiple consoles including Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation platforms.

Though no official reason was given for the decision, IGNcube speculates that the philosophies of the two companies did not mesh. Silicon Knights has always been a very content-driven studio with strong beliefs in the elements of game creation including story, artistry, sound, and technology. Nintendo has recently downplayed the role of technology in game creation and has been known to de-emphasize story, graphics and sound in favor of classic play mechanics.
"Silicon Knights and Nintendo have agreed to mutually part ways," Silicon Knights' president Denis Dyack told IGNcube.

"Nintendo and Silicon Knights have reached an agreement allowing Silicon Knights to pursue its vision of videogame entertainment with other companies," said a Nintendo of America spokesperson. "Nintendo respects the creative work of Silicon Knights and the parties have left the door open to work on future projects that meet the creative vision of both companies."

Asked if today's news meant Silicon Knights would not continue to develop for Nintendo platforms, Denis Dyack said: "No it doesn't. It's possible that we may do another game with Nintendo, actually. It just means that we've decided to break our exclusivity with Nintendo."

Dyack confirmed that Silicon Knights is now fully able to develop for competing consoles as well.

An official announcement from Nintendo is expected in the coming weeks.

:nono: I'm getting sick of Nintendo's poor decision making abilities. It's like Nintendo wants people to stop supporting their product, and really make it the "kiddie system". The whole idea of, "gamers don't want amazing graphics, great storyline/dialogue, great control, depth gameplay". "We're gonna make games where you play with as few buttons possible, etc."

Nintendo is digging themselves into a hole and it doesn't really seem they care. Let it die off and put the games on other systems. I know if they asked me to make my games like that, I'd just move on and go to another system. I like them but they're about done.

I own A ps2 and Nintendo Gamecube..theres a reason why i own 4 times more games for Ps2. One being that Nintendo has been holding off on realesing good qualitie games mostly do to the rating that Nintendo wants to uphold. Dont get me wrong Nintendo does have some good games Resident evil 0 is a great play and the Zelda sagas are legendary. I think Nintendo needs to lift there Rating up a little and produce Games that sell. I know I know, Mortal Kombat : Deadly Alliance did come out For nintendo Gamecube as well but over all Nintendos games are mild and appeal to the younger audience.

Letting Rare go was the dumbest thing ever, and now this. :nono:

If you think this is bad just wait. It's going to get a lot worse. After the PSP hits the market and starts selling wave loads because it's new I think Nintendo will end up doing something quite stupid around that time. I bet, soon enough, they are going to drop out of next generation console race and go to portable console only.

It's a shame though.

The Gamecube is an awesome system. It tends to a better quality (IMO) than the PS2, and I won't even bother with an X-Box.

However, fewer and fewer games have really caught my eye, so I've ended up mostly filling my Ps2 library.

I completely agree with you KK. I'm dissapointed as I had become a huge fan of Silicon Knights after Eternal Darkness, and Metal of Honor Twin Snakes sparked my interest with them even more. :(

Like that Dual Screen or whatever that was being rumored? :'(

On an unrelated note, I find your Will Ferrell avatar to be hilarious.

I own an Xbox, PS2 and GameCube, and my personal favourite is the GameCube. Most of the games I have played on the GameCube seem to be original, fun and always inspire you to come back and play again and again.

Anyway, im not entirely bothered by SK splitting from Nintendo. At least Twin Snakes would get ported.

Personally, I don't think any development company should be exclusive to any one console. Share the love you bastard!! I'm not happy to tell a PS2 owner that I enjoyed Eternal Darkness and he can't. That's childish and at times unfair. And PS2 owners weren't thrilled at the Nintendo/Capcom bombshell wasn't they? I think it should end; if there's anything that should be learned from Sega sharing the love, it's that there's NOTHING wrong with geving everyone a chance to experience certain games. I could've sworn I just got off this topic...

Certain gaming houses are stylistically suited for one system's "genre" anyway. Not to mention adapatiations that must be made for consideration on certain systems.

the main reason, however, is the incentive it gives gamers to buy multiple systems. For most of us, it seems to have worked.

that's not to say I LIKE brand exclusive games, just going over why it's done.

Sega only "shared the love" because they couldn't maintain a console market and their own "brand exclusivity." They destroyed their market's faith by making console after console with minimal support. As big a SEGA fan as I was, I refused to buy a Dreamcast, because I'd seen what they did with their last like 50 systems (all released in the same 6 month period... ).

Basically, they only did it because of shitty business decisions.

Think a Sega employee would cry at that comment. I understand the system audience dictates how developing games goes and all, it's just that I wish they'd be more widespread with titles. Who'd thought Splinter Cell would be cool on Gamecube?

Emphasis on had. They've yet to prove whether they can live up to past form on a console they've never worked on before now...

A Banjo Kazooie on XBox would be wild. Not to mention, cough - cough, Perfect Dark Zero (waiting for Halo 2 my ass). Rareware maybe lazy asses at the moment, but they do have a track record that other developers wish they had.
