View Full Version : Golberg returning to WWE?
source: www.f4wonline.com
While the clip of Bill Goldberg pinning Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XX was largely aired this past week on Raw to put over tomorrow night's special guest host, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, WWE has indeed been in talks with the former wrestling megastar regarding a relationship renewal.
WWE officials recognize he's not going to come back and wrestle, but they're hopeful of reaching a deal where they can use his likeness in video games and perhaps an induction into next week year's Hall of Fame class considering they are running low on "main eventers."
Next year's Hall of Fame class is expected to have a WCW theme considering that it will be taking place in Atlanta, Georgia.
Can't wait for next week year's HOF.

Very interesting. Goldberg being in WWE video games, being put into the Hall of Fame and all that jazz all sort of grab my attention. I don't know why Goldberg would refute this offer -- he gets to pretty much do nothing and gets his star shone again. Hell, if he wanted to, he could probably come back for a match against a random heel at WrestleMania XXVII and win in a squash. Then he'd be 2-0 at WrestleMania.

It would be cool to see Goldberg back for a short run. Goldberg/Orton, Goldberg/Cena and Goldberg/Batista (basically the Lesnar match done right) could all be big draws.
The WCW theme HOF sounds good too :y:

You really think Jake Roberts is someone they want to promote at this point?
Amazing wrestler, but he's pretty much the poster boy of what WWE is trying to distance themselves from.

I don't see why people have a problem with WCW or ECW wrestlers going into the WWE HOF when you consider the circumstances. Vince owns pretty much everything to do with both companies. Obviously since they're no longer around they can't induct their workers into anything similar. Instead of bitching and moaning that *insert name* wasn't a WWE guy at least show Vince some respect for allowing their efforts to be recognized.
There shouldn't even BE a celebrity wing.
I disagree. Celebrities, most notably Mr. T and Lauper, were huge proponents in the first Mania's build.
Add that to the fact that countless celebrities have come and gone through the business at one point or another and it's more than acceptable.
And as much as I despise him as a wrestler, Goldberg more than deserves into the Hall of Fame. Sure, it was a "right place right time" type of deal, but it was a huge deal.

Pete Rose being inducted into the WWE HALL OF FAME is quite possibly the greatest publicity stunt McMahon and company have ever pulled off, and was quite honestly nothing short of brilliant.
For people to take offense to a maneuver the earned them that insane level of mainstream media coverage (which in nearly all cases they couldn't have bought if they'd tried) is pretty insane, and the true definition of missing the big picture.

I'd love it if Goldberg WANTED to wrestle, but I have read interview where he said it wasn't going to happen. But so did Bret Hart, and Shawn Michaels, and Ric Flair, and Terry Funk etc... So who knows? There are some great match up for Goldberg if he were to return, Cena, Taker, Orton, Batista, Edge, Jericho, Triple H, Michaels... So I would love it but for the sake of realism, it would also be really cool if he became a commentator for Raw.

Him vs Jericho I doubt. They got into it for real in WCW and I guess they still don't like each other during the WWE stint? And I love how Goldberg ran through everyone but was buried by Triple H and his sledgehammer, not. He'd run right through Orton and Taker like he did with Kane and Brock so I don't want to see that. Although I'd love for an RKO to come out of nowhere. I would love to see Cena get speared and Jack hammered consistently though. Batista, Edge or HBK would be the best out of all those.

Mr. Nerfect
03-16-2010, 01:16 PM
lol. Comparing Goldberg to Bret, Shawn, Flair and Funk.
Why not? The point has nothing to do with ability and more to do with guys coming back to the ring after their "retirement."
And regardless of how one critically views the guy, he was one of the biggest stars in professional wrestling's history. Fact. The man drew money. I wouldn't want to see him in an Iron Man Match more than the next guy, but his contributions to wrestling from a mere superficial point of view are tremendous. I'm sure more people know about him more than Terry Funk, and arguably some of the other guys on that list -- for right or wrong.
Not sure how possible this is, but given that he's rested up a fair bit, and has gone on the record saying that he could go another two years full-time if he wanted to (although he has expressed no desire to): Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Goldberg could still be a money match. There are downsides to it (timing, the egos involved, and giving a Mania spot to two guys who don't wrestle anymore), but from a financial standpoint, I think the WWE would be fools not to consider it.
What Would Kevin Do?
03-16-2010, 01:30 PM
They need to induct Brian Pillman, and have Austin do his speech.
Totally irrelevant to WCW, but I fully expect HBK by 2012.

Goldberg deserves the nod for the HOF. In terms of being brought back for a short program, or even limited schedule for another year, it's a crapshoot whether or not he would draw. The landscape has changed ten fold over Goldberg's 6 year absence. Many of the kid-heavy audiences may not give Goldberg the reception that he would've gotten some years back.

Don't kid yourself. You can't read. But look at what I found, Pictures! You see in this first picture the line represents people who have lost interest in this incredibly boring sport. And Yes, I realize this graph does not include the 2009 season. But use your imagination.

Ok, so I have proved the falling popularity of baseball. But how does that prove that Nascar is more popular? Ah, lookie here. I found another picture.

Now I myself don't watch either of these sports because I'm not a complete lame-ass or a redneck who took my cousin to prom. I just wanted to prove you wrong. Don't ever question me again.
As a Brit, I've never understood the appeal of baseball as a sport. But wasn't it popular for the experience? A day out at a classic stadium, hot dogs etc. Are the declining viewing figures relative to the tearing down of the classic and vintage baseball grounds? And the introduction of evening/night games?

They probably have more to do with the growth of other sports, and the expansion of entertainment in general.
Like everything else, it's more niche oriented. In the old days, when there were like 5 channels on the television, more people were tuning into/paying attention to the same things.
Nowadays, people can tune out of the world series to watch Keeping Up With The Kardashians or some shit.
The same goes for movies, and television programs. There were less options, so everyone was into the same stuff more or less.
Now the sports world is massive. There are entire channels dedicated not only to sports, but each sport. Since then, the major leagues of football, basketball and hockey have gotten on the map. Neither of the three were huge nationally like baseball was.
Also, his figures are misleading. The trend graphs show growth for nascar, and decline for baseball, sure. It's irrelevant though.
If you actually read the graphs and look at the viewers in millions you will see that they are scaled differently, and Nascar isn't exceeding the World Series by much, or at all, in all of those years presented.

Also, there are some sports that will never catch on on the other side of their respective "pond". Cricket and baseball.

At this stage in the game, I don't think he'd be anywhere near as over as he was when he left. Maybe in the Impact Zone where they'll pop for the hot dog vendor.
But a return to WWE wouldn't cause a big splash like it originally did. The crowd has turned over a bit. I think they could easily get him back over though, with the wonders of their promotion/video packages, and a push.
I don't think it's that exciting either way though. I couldn't really care less. I think it would be kind of a waste since he's not that great and you'd have to put him over a lot of people to make it work.
Anything more than 3-6 months of him would get stale quickly as well.
let's do a little research next time before we make a thread, k?

Former World Heavyweight Champion Bill Goldberg announced on his Twitter account this evening that he’s negotiating with WWE regarding a possible return to the company.
“YES.. I am in negotiations with the WWE,” Goldberg wrote. “Looks like ‘ole Hogan and TNA missed the boat. Shame for the fans they didn’t even try.”
While Goldberg has been critical of WWE since his departure from the organization in 2004 and repeatedly said he had no interest in returning to wrestle, he acknowledged a change in heart.
“Truth is I never thought I’d even consider it…then came my son,” Goldberg said. “No one said I’d wrestle but the door is open again.”
He also added that if he ever steps foot inside a ring again, it will be alongside San Diego Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman. The three-time Pro Bowler is a huge WWE fan to say the least, so much so that he asked their Twitter account on Monday if he could participate in the live chat on WWE.com.
“Also…. If I ever did step in the ring again, I have a new tag partner. He goes by the name of “Lights Out!!!! the one and only Shawn Merriman…..updating the old Goldberg/Kevin Greene duo,” Goldberg wrote.
LOL - this is definitely an April Fool's Joke. Goldberg is NOT coming back to the WWE.
So you're saying it's impossible that WWE wants him on a legends deal for merch, maybe for a movie deal?

Not impossible, but extremely unlikely. My guess is that this whole thing is a crap attempt at an April Fool's joke.
An April Fool's joke in March. Makes sense.
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can (and should) check out at JRsBarBQ.com. In this entry, Ross responds to a Twitter post made by former WWE & WCW Champion Bill Goldberg about negotiating with WWE and TNA "dropping the ball" on not signing him first. JR writes:
"Bill Goldberg reports that he is negotiating with WWE but my best guess is that it's not about a return to the ring. Bill is a smart entrepreneur and the former Tulsa Edison and University of Georgia football star likely is looking at doing a marketing deal with WWE that might include video games, possible WWE HOF Induction next year in Atlanta, and merchandise sales."
Despite the fact that Ross doesn't believe Goldberg is negotiating to return to the ring on a full-time basis, he could see Goldberg getting back in the ring one more time if the right situation presented itself.
"After being involved in several of these type deals, I can see where both parties can benefit from an arrangement. Goldberg gets the opportunity to earn additional cash without putting his body through hell and he gets some nice exposure for his various TV vehicles. The WWE could monetize Goldberg's likeness in a variety of ways. Is it possible for Goldberg to come back and perform in a 'farewell bout' in the Georgia Dome next year at WM27? It's possible one has to assume."

I’m on the boat with those supporting a return. I can barely remember his run in WWE and was never a fan, but he has a few matches still ahead of him. It could be shot in the arm for one of the brands and would certainly freshen the product up to inject a name like him into RAW, given his importance and the hype it will create.
Too bad Goldberg vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin didn’t ever happen. That match in 2001 would’ve killed all buyrates prior.

I'm not sure how Goldberg has any matches ahead of him. He barely has any behind him.

It makes perfect sense. Some of the best April Fools' jokes are planned out a few weeks in advance....only to be revealed on April 1st. Maybe this tradition doesn't exist amongst lower income Mexican families. :?:
So Goldberg's gonna tweet "lol jk" on April 1st?

Yeah, maybe if my family owned a few 7-Eleven's I might have been able to pick up that tradition.

The only time I can picture him working a match would be WrestleMania 27 in the Georgia Dome, so I’d figure it will be Goldberg/John Cena if something happens.
